First, like many of you I was disgusted with the way the game played out Saturday night. That Auburn team was not very good, and we settled for way too many field goals which came back to bite us. We do not have a killer mentality this year, and we let both Mississippi State and Auburn get back into games that we should have put away.
However, I am not on board the fire Ed train yet, but I could get there this weekend. Hear me out. Kentucky just had one of their biggest wins in program history, and they are not one of those super talented teams that can just beat you every week even if they are not on their A game. I can almost guarantee you they won't be on their A game this week, and if LSU goes into their house and beats an undefeated #16 ranked team that can really springboard us into the second half of the season and give us the opportunity to make another statement the following week at home against Florida. Also, this Auburn team is going to lose at least 2 if not more SEC games this year. Theoretically we still have everything to play for this year. If Stingley can come back (a big if I know) and our young players continue to grow we could be a formidable opponent the back half of the season. I'd say our odds are less than 1% we win the SEC this year, but it is still POSSIBLE!
All that being said if we lose to Kentucky this weekend and finish the first half of the year 3-3 with that end of season schedule then we are looking at our first losing season in over 20 years, and the entire program will have to be recalibrated. I'm not big on firing coaches mid-season, but IF we lose to kentucky next week and Ed gets fired this year I absolutely think we need to do whatever it takes to hire Luke Fickell. He may be the best coach in college football today, and while he will absolutely leave for the Ohio State job if Ryan Day ever decides to give the NFL a try you still take him in my opinion because who knows how long that might be, and he will have our program turned around very fast and leave it in good hands for whoever comes next.
