What I saw tonight was a dumpster fire. I'll admit the D lacks the size up front to protect the LBs from the OL. Orgeron will fix that. The scheme, however, utterly failed to put the players in a position to succeed. In what world does giving a cushion on 3rd and Short make sense? Happened all night. Then in 3rd and longs we gave even bigger cushions and just gave away first downs. Scheme is a problem for the D.
The offense. Oh my, where to start? The OL grades an F tonight. They got B slapped tonight all over the field. The tackles were awful all game. The interior of the line utterly failed to open holes at all. That being said, all of that could have been compensated for with a decent game plan.
Everyone barks about we need to throw the ball. It's not how much you throw but "how" you throw. We were dropping into seven step drops and trying to throw the ball 15 or deeper down the field. You simply cannot do that when your OL is getting beat. You have to manage your passing game like anything else. You throw short quick hitting routes that protects the QB/OL by getting rid of the ball. No passing route should be deeper than 12 yards when the OL is struggling. The last drive of the first half was a picture perfect example of the scheme neccessary to protect the OL. Same thing in the first drive of the second half and suddenly we can run the ball again. Inexplicably, we went back to the run, run, throw deep scheme for the remainder of the game.
This loss is in Les. He stole money from the university tonight. He needs to fire Cameron and pretty much every coach on O. Go get a young mid 30 or early 40 something OC that is capable of immediate, in-game adjustments. Also, needs to have the balls to tell Les to shut up and get out of the way. If Miles can't do this he needs to retire.
