When Nick first got to LSU he made himself very a accessible to a few of us donors and I was one of them. I feel that I got to know him very well and his mentality. He was the type of guy that everything from the garbage cans to the weight room needed to be First Class. A list below is what I observed attending the last couple Bama LSU games on Tide Town.
1. Nick maybe having the "Little Man Syndrome" always always always talked about a good big man will always beat a smaller good man. And in his exact words he would say "that's why you have weight divisions in boxing". He loved. Loved. Loved. When Andrew Whitworth about killed Georgia's All American DE Pollack now a commentator. Pollack was a smallish DL guy while Whitworth was a huge of a man that was very talented. Point being look at who and what he recruits for lineman. They are just a different kind of guy than we have. Just huge. Physical. Raw power and he has many of them. He wants these guys so big in his words "there is no place to run because their asses go from sideline to sideline".
2. Nick believes in the psychology of the game. If anyone saw one of his interviews in his car heading to the campus he discussed during this time he uses it to do more than X's and O's but maybe in his words "call a psychologist" to see how to approach something. He is huge on this. Now you guys listen. He has put his mark on so many things at Bama. See next point.
3. During the game at Bama they pipe in a ton of what I call artificial noise. And probably the most piped in sounds is their strength and conditioning coach Cochran yelling with that piercing voice motivational slogans but more important Psychological plays to get into the opposing teams heads. And at the same time they are running videos of past plays from previous years that put the knife in the heart of our Tigers to beat us. THIS IS NICK SABAN PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE!!!!!!! It's Nick.
PS. And by the way watching a game with that type of noise is very annoying even if it was at LSU. Alabama has taken it to another level. If you take that artificial noise away that stadium would be like church. I will give them one credit. They wave their Pom poms.
4. The facilities is Nick's. From all the slogans to the signature letter A on everything accept the toilet paper. He is trying to brand it to a different level. That's the way he was going at LSU but he was not there long enough. It's also why our Ad did not overly care for him. It takes a ton of money to pay Nick but more money to run the program Nicks way.
5. Now if you take what I know from above and you factor his approach into recruiting can you imagine why he has had the top class forever. It's Nick.
I hope this gives the objective fan an insight to what Nick is all about. He is a cerebral guy. And I love our coach. In fact I personally would rather play for our guy. But the other guy in Nick is just built for winning. And it's a huge cost you pay to have him. As a player and as an organization to afford his approach. I do t think the leadership at the time was willing to go as far as Nick wanted to go. Bama did.
