Disclaimer - intended to be exaggerated for humor...

I just can't get enough of college football fans' comments after they've watched some recruit's highlight reel. While some things can be easily discernible from these videos, some just can't be. And I always laugh when I read someone say:

- He knows how to read and fill the hole better than any linebacker in the class!

--- What?!?! Out of probably 500 defensive snaps this kid played his senior season, this highlight reel shows perhaps 40 plays (of which maybe 10 show him meeting a RB in the hole). How do we know how well (or poorly) he "filled the hole" on all those other plays NOT on the highlight reel.

- This QB has the accuracy we need in our program!

--- Well, I would hope the kid was able to throw 40 accurate passes over the course of his senior season. How many highlight reels have you seen that showed an incompletion? Every QB recruit completes 100% of their passes on highlight reels.

- He has great hands!

--- As if a highlight reel is gonna show a bunch of his dropped passes

- He's a real ballhawk in the secondary!

--- Although he may have given up 12 TD passes during the season - none of which made it onto his highlight reel

+++++++++++++

Again, I am not saying that watching highlight reels is a waste of time - it isn't. But for some things (like some I mentioned above), you really need to sit through "entire game film" to get a real handle on those things. But even then, "level of competition" needs to be factored in, etc. And personally, I simply do not have the time.
