LSU MEN CAPTURE SEC ALL-SPORTS TROPHY; WOMEN THIRD

BATON ROUGE – With conference titles in baseball and men’s golf, the LSU men captured the Southeastern Conference All-Sports title for 2014-15, which was compiled this year by GateHouse Media.

The SEC All-Sports title is the first for the LSU men since 1996-97. The LSU women finished third this year in the all-sports standings. Overall, LSU came in third behind No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Texas A&M.

The SEC All-Sports Trophy was presented by GateHouse Media, which owns the Gainesville Sun as well as dozens of other publications around the country, for the first time in 2014-15. The Halifax Media Group presented the all-sports trophy from 2011-14. Prior to that, the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group gave the award from 1994-95 through 2010-11.

The league tabulated the All-Sports Trophy from 1973-94.

How is the GateHouse Media SEC All-Sports titles figured?

Points are awarded based on the number of competing teams in a sport (e.g. – 14 teams compete in SEC baseball, giving the winner 14 points, second gets 13, etc. Four teams compete in equestrian, awarding four points to the winner). A program’s points total is divided by the total number of teams competing in the sports the school fields and that quotient ranks the teams in the final GateHouse Media standings. The sports of cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field are combined. A program's outdoor track finish makes up half, while the remaining two quarters are based on the cross country and indoor finishes.
