LSU wrapped up spring ball Saturday with a 32-32 tie. The sidelines were packed with recruits and their families along with some former players, including Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
- First, this offense could be very dangerous this fall. I hate to compare it to 2019 because that was so special but the potential is there.
- I say that because of what I saw today from the WRs, especially Kyren Lacy, who Brian Kelly recently praised for taking that next step and displaying consistency. We know what Malik Nabers can do and Lacy flashed today with 92-yards on four catches, including an incredible one-handed which he scored on.
- More on the WRs: today was the first day I got to see them really up close during warmups. Malik has bulked up and is very very similar to Ja’Marr Chase’s body frame. Then Lacy is No. 2 and making catches and separation similar to Justin Jefferson. Brian Thomas Jr. Is not going to beat a DB with speed but he has the size that any QB would love to look for in the end zone, which we saw today when Nussmeier tossed him a TD. Those WRs remind me so much of the 2019 trip of Chase, Jefferson and Terrace Marshall. Throw in a Mason Taylor or maybe a Ka’Morreun Pimpton at TE plus a mobile Jayden Daniels — potentially a very dangerous group.
- LSU has plenty of position battles going on and will continue into fall camp. Both kickers missed field goals. That position has not been decided. The CB room has competition going on with many new faces but I really liked what I saw from Laterrance Welch today who had two really nice breakups on Chris Hilton Jr.
- Punters Jay Bramblett and Peyton Todd looked pretty equal in terms of distance, although, I don’t anticipate that to be a competition with Bramblett coming back for one more year.
- Jaxon Howard and Bradyn Swinson both flashed a few times and recorded a sack. Paris Shand and Princeton Malbrue recorded sacks too. Of course Harold Perkins was all over the field and made some nice reads. I really loved what I saw from Omar Speights at the LB spot. He’s extremely active. Moves well.
- The QBs were pretty spot on about even. The stats looked a little better for Jayden Daniels as Garrett Nussmeier didn’t always play with the entire first team but both made some impressive downfield throws and it was clear the WRs and QBs have bonded. They all celebrated each other on big plays and TDs.
