A number of similarities...

> Robert Lane was the #1 rated Dual-Threat QB in the country (by Rivals)
> He was ranked as the #32 player in the entire country

> He was extremely athletic, with very good running skills to go with his arm
> Came from a football family - where that family seemed to have much more influence than most recruits

> Lane's decision was also heavily influenced by the recruitment of an OOS quarterback
> Lane was an instate stud - hailed by LSU fans as a must-get (and were incredulous that we might allow Lane to slip through our fingers while Fisher was out courting Jamarcus Russell)

> Lane ended up at Ole Miss

++++++++++++++++

Plus, there are similarities between Franks and Jamarcus Russell coming out of high school:

> Neither were/are from Louisiana
> Both were/are more of a pocket passer than Lane/Patterson (regardless of labels from recruiting services)

> Both were/are imposing physically, with advanced mechanics and footwork
> Both were/are highly rated, but below the Louisiana options (Russell was #6 Pro-Style, and #79 ranked overall)

> Neither of them had/have any problem coming to LSU to compete against the "fair-haired instate hero".

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Not saying Patterson is doomed to be a bust like Lane was. In fact, I consider Patterson a superb prospect. But to be honest, I thought Lane was gonna be a sure-fire star as well.
