If I recall correctly, after 20 recruits when a team adds a recruit Rivals drops the lowest ranked recruit and adds the new recruit if he is ranked higher than the lowest tanked recruit. In other words they only use 20 recruits in a team evaluation. I believe some of the other services also do this or something similar. This is why a 5.9 type recruit does not add as much as a 5.9 did before you reached 20 players. I believe the purpose of this is to keep the spread closer between the teams because lower ranked players are not evaluated as well As well as higher ranked players and it average s out the mistakes.
I remember there was an article about how at LSU very few 3 stars, something like 1-3, over several years, did not contribute equal to or better than some 4-5* players. This would seem to validate using only 20 players.
What I wonder now is over the next 2 classes of recruiting where teams can take as many players as needed to get to the 85 scholarships if Rivals has made some provision has been made to adjust the 20 players number. It would seem to me that a team who has to recruit 30-35 players should get some credit for improving the numbers on their rosters. That is a big part of recruiting in these 2 years.
