It is evident that Miles's tenure at LSU is coming to an end. I am sorry about that because he is a decent man and did well by LSU, regardless of what many fans think. I agree with the popular opinion. It is time to make a change. The body language of Les Miles was that of a defeated man. It showed on his players, yet Miles was stoic and still shows class and composure as he handles questions about his job security. I think it is the best thing for LSU and for Les Miles to part ways. I think both will live to flourish in some way in the future.
I do not like the way that this situation has been handled in the media. While I believe it is time for Les to move on, he deserves to be treated better. LSU should not have let the story leak out. In 1990, for much of the year, Joe Dean was already looking for a coach during the season. They settled on Curly Hallman and we know how that ended up.
You can not parse this situation and say that how will this affect recruiting. You can not worry about keeping Ogeron, Wilson, Steele because they are great recruiters. A new coach must be able to bring in his own staff. There never should be stipulations. I think LSU can attract a good coach if they do this right, but they could also screw it up if they don't do this right. Usually the coach that is hired is never the one who everyone thinks they should go after. Case in point, Jimbo Fisher. Everyone thinks it is simple. Just snap their fingers and it is done. Fisher is paid close to $5 million a year and he can make up to $45 million if he stays the duration of his contract. The ACC is a lot easier to win in than the SEC West. Just like Saban to Texas, this is not likely going to happen. Jimbo may listen, but I would not bet the house on it. Going after the hot coach at Memphis or Houston sounds appealing, be careful about basing things off of one good season. Remember, Curly Hallman in 1989 and 1990. USM beats Florida State and Alabama of all teams. They were 8-3 in 1990, but they also had Brett Favre. What happened after that. Do not be seduced by one season.
It will be interesting. It will not be boring. I have mixed emotions. I know it is time to move on, but I am not sure if this change will improve the situation. What I do know, regardless of how many feel, we LSU fans owe a great deal to Les Miles and yes, also Nick Saban. Both men helped to make LSU relevant on the National Stage. LSU has reaped benefits from the efforts of both coaches. They have delivered two National Championships, Four SEC Titles, six SEC West Titles, four major bowl wins, six Top 5 finishes, seven Top 10 finishes, and at least 8 wins a year over that span. It is the best era in LSU football history. I am glad that I have lived to witness it. It can still be even better with the right hire, but it will not be easy because the SEC Network has given every SEC Team resources to compete. Once both Miles and Saban are no longer coaching, LSU should find a way to honor both coaches. There should be statues of both coaches as well as one of Paul Dietzel. Treadition is an important thing.
We will see what the future holds. It may get worse before it gets better or it may turn around over night. Let's pull for the Tigers next weekend. If it Les's last game, let him go out a winner.
