I think there are a lot of misconceptions on this site with concerns about the possibility of the LSU offense converting to the "spread"!

The most important thing to remember is that the spread offense does not always mean QB runs and hurry up offense.

One aspect of the spread offense is the opportunity to run the zone reads with your QB (both inside and outside zone reads) but you can run the ball effectively out of the spread by running Power and Counters with an H back in the back field as a lead blocker.

Another aspect is the ability to run hurry up. This is best done by having athletes that can serve multiple roles. For example, an H back that can act as both a slot receiver and a full back and even a tight end. Another example is having receivers that can play in both the slot and as an outside receiver. These type of athletes allow you to run multiple formations in a hurry up model and create mismatches without allowing the defense to substitute.

With all that being said, many teams run the spread offense and never require the QB to run the ball which means the spread should not run Brennan off. He can run a spread offense just fine. Yes, Orgeron mentioned dual threat QB's but that isn't required for a spread. Maybe he does want to run the zone reads but a guy like Brennan can be very effective in the spread running power and counters with the play action off that as well as running a designed passing game with 4 and 5 receivers in routes. A lot of the Big 12 teams do this very effectively.

For those that are concerned with the spread making our defense less effective, you can run a spread offense out of a huddle whenever you feel your defense needs the extra time on the sideline. You can also run the spread without huddling, using the same personnel play after play and try to catch the defense when they substitute but take as much time off the play clock as you want.

My major issue is with the spread is that short yardage plays are often a problem so I would prefer a situation where we can get under center enough that it can be effective on 3rd or 4th and 2 or less.

Personally, I have no problem with us getting an OC that commits to the spread as long as they are able to adapt to situations and adjust on the fly!
