The latest batch of court documents in the John Chavis-LSU case show that there was not bad feelings between Les Miles and Chavis. It is true that Miles offered Chavis a 3-year, $5.4 million contract the night of the Music City Bowl. It was a last ditch attempt by Miles to keep Chavis. But, the LSU athletic administration had agreed to guarantee Chavis' first two years of the new contract and not the third. That was not going to change and Chavis was not going to give in. Chavis was initially hired believing that he would always have a guaranteed contract. As written previously, Joe Alleva did not want to have to pay Chavis more than $1 million if Miles was not the coach in 2017. It was strictly a business decision from Alleva's standpoint. Alleva also felt that LSU had done quite a lot from a financial basis for Chavis since he was hired after being fired at Tennessee.
