Bryan's article, on defensing the read-option, is well worth the read.

;)Great stuff!;)

Interesting mix of past games, player information and player's quotes:

in a way back machine, he recalled past games...

"That game was a nightmare for former LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis."

"What has probably been forgotten is the fact that the Tigers defense under Kevin Steele was spectacular against the read option last year in the game at Starkville. Prescott was turned into just a passer as he rushed for only nine yards in seven attempts. LSU held on for a 21-19 victory."

:eek:Nick Fitzgerald:eek:

:cool:Player quotes...

"At least, the LSU defense has quite a few players who have seen zone-read plays from other teams. These veteran Tigers understand what must be done to control this style of offense."

“There are different ways for us to execute against the zone-read offense,” defensive end Lewis Neal said. “I have different responsibilities depending upon what is called. It all depends upon how coach (Aranda) plays it."

“I do know we all have to fit in the proper places. Big plays happen because of mistakes with our fits and not what the offense does. We messed up some fits last week, so the focus is on that for us.”

“Eli Jenkins should get us ready for this game,” Adams said. “We have to be honest and be in the right gap. The quarterback was reading on the option and pulling the ball. That’s hard for the defense. Coach Aranda’s scheme for the zone read is not different. We have to be dialed in and focused.”

Inside linebacker Kendell Beckwith had not yet broken into the starting lineup when Prescott dominated the Tigers defense in 2014. Beckwith was on the field last year when the Bulldogs running game was not really a factor.

“It is very important for everyone to play his role against the read option,” Beckwith said. “The number one thing is everybody doing their job on every play and tackling well. Everybody must buy in and play assignment football and not try to make the big play."

“Nick Fitzgerald is a new face, a new person to deal with. Playing the read option is basically the same in every defense. Somebody has the quarterback and somebody has the running back. Whatever your responsibility is, you have to do your job.”
