LSU head basketball coach Will Wade lost a player and gained a player Tuesday night.
Antonio Blakeney announced on twitter that he is declaring for the NBA draft. Blakeney did not indicate that he will hire an agent. Reportedly, Blakeney will not return to LSU.
“First and foremost, I want to thank LSU for affording me the opportunity to
represent the school and the men’s basketball program over the past two years.
It was a privilege to wear the Purple and Gold uniform alongside my teammates.
It was an honor to battle with you each and every night,” he said.
“I want to thank my coaches and LSU staff members for providing me with the
opportunity to learn on and off the court. I appreciate the fans who took me in
as family from the day I committed, which makes this bittersweet. After weeks of
discussion, thoughts and prayers, I have decided to take the next step in my
basketball career. With that being said, I would like to announce that I’m
entering the 2017 NBA Draft.”
Mayan Kiir, a 6-10 post player from Victory Prep in Bradenton (Fla.), committed to LSU. Kiir had signed last fall with VCU when Wade was the head coach. After Wade was named head coach at LSU, Kiir requested a release from VCU and received it.
Kiir is expected to sign with LSU on Wednesday, the first day of the spring signing period. Kiir averaged 13.4 points and 8.2 rebounds per game last season in high school. Kiir shot 55 percent from the field and 71 percent from the foul line this year.
Kiir is a 3-star recruit. He is not rated among the top 150 players in the country.
LSU still has one available scholarship.
