It was a busy weekend at Battle NOLA so here's a few tidbits I picked up along the way...
LSU hosted transfer OL Tyler Steen on an official and a source tells me the visit went great and that LSU feels like the visit left a great impression on the Steen family. Still waiting to see if I can line something up with his dad soon for an interview and they're supposed to have an Alabama visit coming up with a decision coming at the end of the month. I'll let y'all know if I hear anything more.
The new LSU coaching staff has likely had 100 or more recruits on campus over the last two weeks with a big first weekend in March and another big weekend this weekend with several 7-on-7 teams stopping by. Obviously, not all those kids on the teams are being recruited by staffers but it's good to get familiar with some of the youngsters in the upcoming classes.
California 2023 prospects Aaron Williams and Leviticus Su'a took a mini tour over the last week with stops at both Alabama then LSU this weekend. Williams visited the Tigers last year and will likely have them in his top group once he narrows things down and this was the first visit to Baton Rouge for Su'a, as far as I know. Su'a does not hold an offer from LSU at this point from what I know and none of LSU's defensive staffers follow him on Twitter. The lone LSU coach to follow him is Brian Polian.
"LSU was a great place with great facilities. One part that stands out is LSU's great former linebackers. Two of my favorite to watch are from LSU -- Devin White and Patrick Queen," Leviticus Su'a said.
Miami LB Robby Washington, who plays with the Miami Immortals 7on7 team and visited LSU over the weekend, said he loved the visit to Baton Rouge and the Tigers will "most likely" be in his final five for official visits later this year.
The Louisiana Bootleggers lost to the New Orleans Hotboyz in overtime on a tipped ball but I'll say that their WR duo of LSU commit Omarion Miller, who I feel is locked in with the Tigers, and Harvey Broussard, who I fully expect to start climbing the rankings after he gets to a few camps this spring and summer, were two of the best WR targets at the event. I saw both of them climb the ladder and make some incredible grabs. I've seen Miller do this for two 7on7 seasons now but Broussard has really added some weight and is a tough WR to cover with his size and leaping ability.
Yes, we are a long ways off before tight end Trey'Dez Green inks his name to a school, but the way he spoke about LSU yesterday and his recent visit, it will be hard for another school to pull him out of the state, especially if LSU continues to show him consistent attention and gets him on campus a few more times, which I think they will. Green was smiling ear to ear when we were discussing the way Brian Kelly has liked to use TEs and had success with them over the years. I entered a FutureCast on Green to LSU.
No. 1 CB in 2024 Desmond Ricks is as impressive off the field as a person as he is on the field. Extremely intelligent kid, very friendly and personable and obviously he has the tools that make him the No. 2 overall recruit in the country for next year. He wasn't able to make it to LSU this weekend due to arriving late but plans to reschedule and get to Baton Rouge. LSU took a bit of a hit when Corey Raymond left because Ricks said he was "feeling LSU heavy with Coach Raymond," but sounds like the new staff has had good communication with him. He talks a lot to analyst Bobby Barham and recruiting specialist Jordan Arcement. Full story on him coming today.
Two more 2023 WR names I'll be monitoring going forward: Mississippi's Ayden Williams and Florida's Jalen Brown. Williams doesn't have an offer from LSU yet, but sounds like they like him a lot and one could potentially be coming. Brown, who visited LSU this weekend, sounded more interested in the Tigers than I initially thought he would and named them as a potential official visit school later this year. More from both these guys in our interview.
This one has nothing to do with LSU (as of right now) but 2023 Cali WR Mikey Matthews was one of the most impressive wideouts at Battle this weekend. He's maybe 5-10 but man can he high-point the ball with the best of them. Elite vertical skills and very strong hands. I wouldn't be shocked to see some bigger schools start to take notice as he's picking up a lot of traction during this spring circuit. He played with EPS Blaze on the weekend.
A few names that weren't at the 7-on-7 event due to other camps or resting injuries: Khai Prean, Xavier Atkins, Shelton Sampson, Eli Holstein, Trey Holly and Rickie Collins. Hoping to see all these guys, or most, at the Rivals NOLA camp in 2 weeks.
