LSU wrapped up its first official camp day of the 2019 calendar year with its linemen camp on Saturday, drawing an impressive array of highly sought after recruits to its football facilities.

The defensive line group was littered with premier prospects from the 2020 and 2021 classes, so this is where we will start.

Jaquelin Roy is a difference maker:

LSU's defensive line needs include both numbers and types. They need to get more athletic and disruptive upfront and Jaquelin Roy is all of that and more. He has been showing up at a lean 28-290 pounds all spring and was around 285 today. He already moved well at slightly over 300 pounds, but the kid we are witnessing today is even more impressive.

He redirects well for his size, evident in numerous drills. He used some of that ability to push or even win some reps in 1-on-1's when his initial move was thwarted. He worked on the edge for much of his 1-on-1 reps, winning just about every one along the way.

He showed good effort in his drill work and appeared really coachable when the LSU staff offered tutoring, which was just about every rep.

Scoop:

It is really hard to get an accurate read on Roy since his decommitment, but the overall feeling from most sources is that LSU remains in a strong position. There is some evidence that Roy is starting to get a little tired of the recruiting process, which may bode well for the Tigers.

Jacobian Guillory, folks:

Jacobian Guillory weighed in at 330 pounds and looked tremendous physically. He has an extremely wide chest and back and a cut lower body at that size. His effort and quickness was impressive to watch at that size and he has the look of an elite nose tackle at the next level.

Guillory's quickness and brute strength allowed him to blow through would-be blockers on his way to a dominate performance in 1-on-1's.

Scoop:

The word on the sidelines was that Guillory may be inching closer to a decision, with LSU the leader at this stage of the process. He was already on commitment watch and it feels like a decision could come sooner than later.

Pat Jenkins deserved his offer:

Look, if LSU wants to become more disruptive up front they will need to recruit more guys like Guillory, Roy and Jenkins. Of all the 270-pound or more defensive linemen in attendance, Jenkins had the quickest first step. Hovering around 6-feet-2, 280 pounds, Jenkins has good size, but average overall length, which seemed to be the only concern for LSU.

But, as one LSU coach stated following a couple of dominant 1-on-1 reps, "length really doesn't matter much if they can't touch ya." Jenkins first-step quickness is elite and his quick and active hands make it nearly impossible for blockers to recover.

Scoop:

Jenkins was contemplating even going to the camp today, so him showing up was the first positive for LSU. Then his performance left little to contemplate. The offer was important to Jenkins, hence the frustration leading to the doubt regarding today's camp, but it is unclear exactly how he feels about things until we catch up later this evening. After a couple of phone calls to people around him the belief is that LSU will instantly move to the top of his board.

Miami commit impresses:

Area recruiter Corey Raymond was hoping that 2021 prospect Savion Collins would make it in from south Florida and he did, much to the delight of the LSU staff. The Miami commit was impressive from start to finish and looks like an elite defensive line prospect.

Collins was impressive in drills and showed off an impressive combination of size, speed and skill in 1-on-1's.

Scoop:

Collins' 12-hour road trip shows that he legitimate interest in LSU. He committed to the Hurricanes in September of 2018, but a source in south Florida believes that commitment is on shaky ground. Expect Collins to become a top target for the Tigers moving forward.

2021 St. Augustine DE is one to watch:

Byron Turner does not have the name recognition of many of the prospects on hand, but he certainly has the potential and upside. The long, athletic prospect showed good initial quickness, the burst to close on the passer and is able to bend and turn the corner off the edge. Tulane was the first to offer six weeks ago, with Kansas, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Virginia quickly following suit. It likely will not take long for LSU to join the race.

Jalen Lee had to work:

Jalen Lee showed up, but had to leave for work, so we did not get to see much from him during the live action.

Ty'Kiest Crawford is a good one:

Ty'Kiest Crawford was the best offensive lineman on hand. He has a great frame and moves really well for his size. There were some technique issues that surfaced throughout the day, but there is little question as to the caliber of prospect everyone was watching. He struggled at times during 1-on-1's, but he was also facing the who's-who of defensive line recruits in the region.

Scoop:

The Arkansas commit continues to frequent the LSU campus. Crawford received a lot of attention from the LSU staff on the day and sources at the school feel like they have a good chance of flipping the rising prospect. They have been on him for some time and the conversation this evening will be centered around a possible flip. He will be moved to the Hot Board momentarily.

Wasn't Ford's best day:

LSU commit Courtland Ford struggled a bit on Saturday. But, as stated with Crawford, the caliber of prospect he was facing would give everyone trouble. With that said, he had a difficult job adjusting to the speed of defenders during 1-on-1's and spent much of his time at guard.

It is important to note that Ford had two knee braces on and is bouncing back from some injuries.
