Let's start with the big one from yesterday, linebacker Harold Perkins decommitting from Texas A&M and locking in a visit to Baton Rouge this weekend. I want to also say it's okay to be optimistic with NSD only eight days away, but do so with caution because other teams are still in play. LSU has certainly made a hard push recently and LB is a position they still need, as I mentioned yesterday. Seems as though Frank Wilson and Carter Sheridan have played big roles here as both are from New Orleans and used that connection with Perkins and his family. A source told me that the five-star LB wasn't completely happy with A&M and the Tigers just kept on him, especially in the last few weeks. Perkins is a 504 kid and we know he has always loved Louisiana and LSU, so we'll see which way this thing plays out over the next week. There's still talk about Florida, Texas, Jackson State and others so that's why I said let's just see how this weekend goes. We've certainly come a long way in a short period of time from this Perkins interview.
Going out on a limb here, but I think it's safe to say John Rutledge is no longer in the picture for LSU. The speedy Dallas receiver confirmed to me this morning that he will be visiting Texas this weekend. He has visited UT before and doesn't have an offer from them yet but perhaps that could change on his visit. He's also a track guy and has been talking to track coaches from across the country. Rutledge posted a time of 21.73 in the prelims of the 200-meter dash, which is the fifth best time in the nation. He turned in an even better time during the finals with a 21.47, the No. 1 time in the nation for indoor track in the 200.
As of right now, this week in Baton Rouge is shaping up to be a big one with expected visits over the weekend from five-star safety Jacoby Mathews, five-star linebacker Harold Perkins, three-star receiver Caleb Douglas and potentially newly offered cornerback Jaelyn Davis-Robinson, who literally just pulled in an offer from the Tigers Monday night. Seems like Oregon Boston College, Houston and Louisville are the competition from the CB. Tight end Danny Lewis confirmed to me yesterday that he will be at LSU this week for a mid-week visit before he takes off to Florida this weekend. Look for the 6-5, 250-pounder to be in Baton Rouge Wednesday and Thursday. Then obviously TreVonte Citizen wrapped up a visit to LSU over the weekend as he preps for a trip to Miami for the final weekend. The dead period kicks in Sunday night at midnight, giving prospects a few quieter days until Feb. 2. Until I hear differently or any last minute names pop, those are the high school names to watch for NSD next week.
Also, I'm hearing that LSU's junior day will be March 5 in Baton Rouge so once we get through National Signing Day next week, we'll turn our focus to which younger prospects the Tigers plan on hosting. But one name that's expected is Tayvion Galloway, a 2024 TE who told me yesterday that he has been in regular communication with Mike Denbrock, who is the college coach he has the best relationship with. He plans to be in Baton Rouge that weekend.
