We only got to see 20 minutes of practice today, but here are my notes:
  • AJ Swann took second team reps early in practice, but Rickie Collins finished out the 20 minutes session we saw leading the second team offense in team drills. The QB2 battle is real and it's going to come down to the wire.
  • Second team offensive line: Tyree Adams (LT), Bo Bordelon (RT), Coen Echols (C), Christian Stamps (RG), Paul Mubenga (LG).
  • The former Ohio State corners, JK Johnson and Jyaire Brown, look like they're going to get a lot of playing time alongside Ashton Stamps and Javien Toviano. It's going to be hard to keep one of those four off the field most plays. Also have to add PJ Woodland to that mix. He's been turning heads early.
  • Speaking of the corners, Corey Raymond has them working on a lot of press coverage and jamming drills. Looks like they're going to be physical off the line of scrimmage.
  • Order the LB's did drills today: Harold Perkins, Greg Penn, Whit Weeks, West Weeks, Christian Brathwaite, Tylen Singleton
  • Jaxon Howard didn't play much last year, but he looks really big and really quick so far this spring. He could push for some serious playing time. Same thing goes for Da'Shawn Womack.
  • Will Campbell and freshman Khayree Lee Jr. were working with the tight ends in blocking drills for a portion of practice. With them moving to a lot more 12 personnel, blocking is going to become a much bigger part of the game for the LSU TE's.
  • In terms of off-the-line speed, Zavion Thomas might be the fastest guy on the team. He gets off the line insanely quick and is very good out of his breaks.
  • Keylan Mosses was on-site watching practice with Blake Baker.
Hurry up drill: We got to see a full drive of the first team offense and first team defense and about three plays of the second team offense and defense going at it. Here's what we saw:
  • First team offense: Garrett Nussmeier, Chris Hilton, Kyren Lacy, Aaron Anderson, Kaleb Jackson (!), Mason Taylor, Will Campbell, Garrett Dellinger, DJ Chester, Miles Frazier, Emery Jones. Saw Kyle Parker and CJ Daniels sub in as well.
  • First team defense: Bradyn Swinson, Jacobian Guillory, Kimo Makane'ole, Sai'vion Jones, Harold Perkins, Greg Penn, Ashton Stamps, PJ Woodland (!), Major Burns, Sage Ryan, Jardin Gilbert
  • Nuss missed one deep ball to Aaron Anderson on his first throw, but hit his next two to finish 2-for-3. Hit Kyren Lacy on a deep ball down the right sideline.
  • Saw a lot of run plays mixed in.
  • Second team offense: Rickie Collins, Josh Williams, CJ Daniels, Javen Nicholas, Khai Prean, Mac Markway, Tyree Adams (LT), Bo Bordelon (RT), Coen Echols (C), Christian Stamps (RG), Paul Mubenga (LG). Saw some different WR's rotate in as well.
  • Second team defense: Javien Toviano, Kylin Jackson, Dashawn Mcbride, Jordan Allen, JK Johnson, Whit Weeks, West Weeks, Da'Shawn Womack, Shone Washington, Paris Shand, Preston Hickey.
  • First play was a big Josh Williams run. Second play was Rickie Collins taking off for a big gain after the pocket broke down. Third play was Whit Weeks stuffing a run. Fourth play was Collins finding Malachai Lane on a swing pass for a decent gain. We got cut off there.
