The second portion of Friday's split-squad practices was conducted in the afternoon. The players were in helmets and shorts. Members of the media were permitted to watch 20 minutes of work outside. With bad weather on the way, the team moved inside for the remainder of practice.
The one person who stood out on the defensive side of the football was outside linebacker Sci Martin. Working with the defensive linemen, Martin showed quickness and acceleration in pass rushing drills. Martin could be slotted for the same role as Arden Key. Martin is bigger than Key right now. Although he plays a different position, Martin seems to be physically ahead of the freshman down linemen -- Edwin Alexander, Rashard Lawrence and Glen Logan.
The three freshmen working at cornerback were Savion Smith, Kristian Fulton and Greedy Williams. Freshmen Eric Monroe and Cameron Lewis were working at safety.
The receivers were much better during the gauntlet drill Friday. Tyron Johnson caught the ball very well for a second straight day. However, the other three receivers looked very good Friday -- Jazz Ferguson, Stephen Sullivan and Dee Anthony.
Running back Nick Brossette, who is coming off knee surgery, caught the ball well in the gauntlet drill. However, his speed was just average for a running back. Quarterbacks Justin McMillan and Lindsey Scott had trouble throwing the ball in the windy conditions.
The team will again have split-squad practices Saturday.
