After further review--the Tigers romped the Bulldogs. It really was a dominant performance in all phases of the game, but most notably the trenches, which is where this game was won.
Georgia had a difficult time sticking to its running game, largely due to how the game unfolded. LSU controlled the clock and kept the Georgia defense on the field for a large portion of the game, which led to some noticeable fatigue that aided LSU's ability to churn out yards with Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Nicholas Brossette.
OL:
Chasen Hines was really good in this match-up. I would say it is his best performance to date. He does not always win at initial contact, but he recovers well for a young guy, showing good feet and quickness. He did a good job of climbing to the second level and picking up filling linebackers, too.
Deculus played a decent game. He whiffed on a few occasions, lunged too often and showed difficulty recovering.
Charles played a lot better than he did against Florida, but it was not his best performance. He had a pretty good game by his standards.
Lloyd Cushenberry continues to neutralize his opposition, utilizing an explosive get-off, raw power and the ability to fire off low and straight, while getting good initial hand placement. I am really liking his game.
Damien Lewis can really get a push when his hands are inside and he can drive a defender. The issue is that he is not exceptional at doing so, but is athletic enough to compensate. He played pretty well as a whole.
The line may have played its best game. They did a great job winning at the point of attack, trimmed back the penalties, getting to the second level and protecting Burrow.
D-Line:
This is a different unit with Ed Alexander on the field. He has the explosiveness and raw power and size to wreak havoc up front. There were three instances that he blew up running play at or behind the line of scrimmage, but was also key in assisting on plays in one of his gaps.
Rashard Lawrence was neutralized for the most part, but did a good job holding the point and altering the play on a couple of occasions.
Fehoko and Logan were solid in this match-up, with Fehoko getting significant reps at both nose and defensive end.
Georgia was able to run on LSU when the game allowed for them to be patient with their running game, but this was a better performance from this group, led by Ed Alexander.
LB's:
The linebackers were just okay as a unit. They were a bit undisciplined in their run fits at times, and that goes for just about every one of them, but they made their presence felt and impacted the game.
Devin White has a hat on him every play. Ed Alexander did a good job keeping interior linemen occupied, limiting their ability to climb and pick up White. Georgia was ready for White on blitz packages, but he was still able to pressure Fromm a bit. He was able to impact the game despite being keyed on by the opposition. A strong showing for White.
Much of the same could be said about Michael Divinity that was stated about White. He missed a couple of tackles, which has been of a problem for him this year, but he found a way to impact the game. He has been really good off the edge, even though he continues to struggle finishing the play in the backfield, but his spin move to get the sack on Fromm was extremely well executed.
Jacob Phillips and the linebackers were somewhat neutralized, or had minimal impacts for large portions of the game.
Kristian Fulton:
This kid has been really good in the last 4 contests. The interception he made was exceptional. He has better feet than Greedy, and that really isn't a question in my mind at this point, and he has been draped all over wide receivers since the corner route he gave up against Miami. He is still a bit handsy, but is showing more restraint. If Greedy and Delpit have been your two best players on defense this year, which I believe is the case, then Fulton may be 3rd. Do you even DBU, Bro?
WR's:
Although there were quite a bit of positives turned in by this group, the film shows some struggles that limit the LSU passing game.
There was a stretch in the game that the LSU receivers really struggled getting clean releases at the line, allowing the Georgia DB's to be disruptive when redirecting and jamming them. It affected timing considerably and made it difficult for Burrow to maintain the rhythm he established early in the contest.
RB's:
Both backs were really good yesterday. CEH was able to shrug off a lot of tacklers, gaining many valuable yards after contact. He also did a great job sifting through traffic and improved on staying patient and pressing the hole a little bit more.
