LSU practiced outdoors in helmets and shorts Tuesday afternoon. Members of the media were permitted to watch about 20 minutes of practice.

The big news of the day involved the inside linebackers position. Kendell Beckwith returned from the knee injury he suffered in the first week of spring drills and worked with the first unit at one inside linebacker spot. The other No. 1 inside linebacker was Duke Riley, who had been lining up at an outside linebacker position all spring. Devin White and Donnie Alexander were the second-unit inside linebackers.

With Riley moving inside, Corey Thompson worked with the first defense at outside linebacker. The other No. 1 outside linebacker was Arden Key. The second-unit outside linebackers were Tashawn Bower and Michael Divinity. LSU has its four best linebackers on the field with Key and Thompson outside and Beckwith and Riley inside. Three of those four linebackers are seniors -- Beckwith, Riley and Thompson.

The secondary continued to struggle with numbers. Dwayne Thomas and Ed Paris were back at practice, but Donte Jackson was missing. Jackson's absence meant more first-unit snaps for Savion Smith at cornerback. Reportedly, Jackson has been ruled academically ineligible for track this semester.

The defensive front was the same -- Lewis Neal and Davon Godchaux at end and Christian LaCouture at nose tackle. The backup ends were Deondre Clark and Frank Herron and the backup nose tackle was Greg Gilmore. Neal was wearing a gold jersey as was inside linebacker Devin Voorhies.

D.J. Chark had an impressive afternoon at wide receiver. Chark is establishing himself as the No. 3 wide receiver behind Malachi Dupre and Travin Dural. No other wide receiver is showing consistency.

Will Clapp was missing from Tuesday's practice. He reportedly has a minor injury. K.J. Malone was getting some work at left guard. Guard Garrett Brumfield was in a gold jersey.

The quarterbacks were working on the deep ball. Brandon Harris showed better arm strength than Danny Etling.

LSU will practice again Thursday afternoon.
