LSU practiced outdoors in helmets and shorts Thursday afternoon. Members of the media were able to observe about 20 minutes of practice.

While members of the media were present, there was a passing drill between the quarterbacks and the running backs/tight ends were defensive players in man-to-man coverage. Linebackers Corey Thompson and Kendell Beckwith stood out in their coverage. Thompson displayed physicality while guarding tight end Colin Jeter. Experience does make a difference. Jeter overwhelmed freshman Michael Divinity on one throw. Leonard Fournette left freshman linebacker Devin White with a great cut on one throw. Quarterbacks Brandon Harris and Danny Etling threw the ball all right. The pass coverage by the linebackers and not poor passes was the reason for the incompletions, for the most part.

There was no Will Clapp at practice for the second straight time. Reportedly, Clapp has a minor injury. Garrett Brumfield, who was in a white jersey for the first time, worked with the No. 1 unit at left guard. Brumfield has been competing with Josh Boutte at right guard. K.J. Malone was the No. 1 right tackle ahead of Toby Weathersby. Malone displayed better quickness than Weathersby.

The secondary was down another player with Tre'Davious White missing from practice. There were only two scholarship cornerbacks at practice -- Savion Smith and Ed Paris. As has been the case all spring, there were just three scholarship safeties -- Jamal Adams, Rickey Jefferson and Xavier Lewis. Five scholarship defensive backs were not at practice -- White, Donte Jackson (academic ineligibility), Dwayne Thomas (class), Kevin Toliver (injury) and John Battle (injury).

Frank Herron was getting some snaps with the No. 1 defense at end. Three players were in gold jerseys (no contact) -- wide receiver Malachi Dupre, defensive end Lewis Neal and outside linebacker Tashawn Bower. Of the three, Bower was the most limited in the drills.

LSU will hold its second major scrimmage of the spring Saturday morning.
