SEC 11/08 Billy Napier Teleconference Notes

  • He's excited about the challenge of playing LSU in Death Valley.
  • Feels his team has resiliency and is continuing to work hard even though they're out of the SEC race.
  • Said it was impressive to watch some of the plays LSU was able to make on offense against Alabama.
  • Thinks LSU is so effective on third down because of all their skill position players. Calls Jayden the "trump card." Also says his research over the last few years says all the top third down offenses have an elite QB who can run as well as pass.
  • Says you have to be careful in recruiting when you promise recruits anything because they can get up and transfer with no punishment if you promise them playing time and they don't get it.
  • Said he had a fantastic time coaching in Louisiana. They've got some kids on their team from Louisiana, so they are all excited to come back and play in Louisiana.
  • Thinks it's a challenge to prepare for both Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier. They've both played and do a good job of distributing the ball, so you really have to be ready for either one to suit up on Saturday. Says Daniels' ability to run is the great equalizer, but thinks Mussmeier will still give them a challenge if he plays.

LSU FOOTBALL 11/08 Brian Kelly Teleconference Notes

  • Says this is an important game for both teams as they're still trying to reach some of their goals for the season.
  • Jayden Daniels worked out this morning and it went well - last stage before he gets cleared for non contact practice. Says they expect him to practice today and he should be cleared for contact practice on Thursday.
  • Says they'll go through and see how each QB is prepared and make their decision on the starting QB based on that.
  • He's really proud of Kyren Lacy's development. Said last year he let some mistakes get to his head, but this year he pushes them aside and bounces back. Says he thinks it's a great idea for his players to stay off social media as much as possible to stay away from distractions.
  • Thinks the Heisman is a "individual award" and not a "team award." Says that if all the candidates are very close statistically, then you should take some of their teams success into account, but thinks the eye test and stats are the best way to determine.
  • Thinks Graham Mertz has settled into their offense and is great control of the offense. He takes care of the football and minimizes mistakes. Does a nice job of getting the ball to Florida's playmakers.
  • Wants to see the defense eliminate big plays, tackle better and leverage the football better. Basically wants to grow the fundamentals.

  • Said it's certainly not the outcome they wanted, but he's proud of the way they competed. You have to play your absolute best to best Alabama, and they just didn't do that for four quarters.
  • Felt the deflected pass for the INT was a game changer.
  • He told the team after the game that they did some really good things, but you have the elite on the road. Says he knows nobody wants to hear this, but they're not at that point right now, but thinks they're going to get there.
  • Says he's excited for the Florida game. Six of the last seven games have been decided by one score.
  • Thinks Florida has some great wins (Tennessee) and praises Graham Mertz for his play this year. Says the offense is built around the run game and using play action to set up deep shots.
  • Says Jayden Daniels is day-to-day. He's going through the concussion protocol so they'll see how it plays out. Says they want to protect the QB and says the replay officials had plenty of time to look at it and didn't call it. They sent it into the league office because he felt the hit "checked all the boxes" of targeting.
  • "Could we have spied the QB? Absolutely." Said there were third downs where they wanted to play coverage because they believed the d-line could hold Milroe in the pocket.
  • Says they're playing the players that give them the best chance to win. Thought the defensive line was battling and physical and didn't knock them off the ball. Says they did well in the run game outside of Milroe.
  • Said they didn't run the ball at all in the fourth quarter because they got behind. They felt their run game wouldn't be as effective against the Bama defensive line.
  • Says they're going to make sure Nussmeier is ready. They have some things to clean up and he knows it. Says they're going to take Jayden's situation day-by-day, but they're preparing for Garrett to be the starter as well.
  • Felt Javien Toviano played solid. Said he was physical and on-body. For a first start on the road, he would say they were pleased with his performance. Also praised Ashton Stamps played well in his snaps.
  • Says despite not having a chance to win the SEC West, he wants his team to rally and try to hit 10 wins again this season. Says it's about who you want to be. Thinks his team can be great, but says his team and staff are going to have to give more this week.
  • He knew taking this job was going to be hard work. He knew it would take a little bit to rebuild this program. Says it's really hard to be elite and it takes time to build that culture. Says they lost 3 times to top-10 teams on the road, but he doesn't care, because to be elite you have to win those games.
  • No other new injuries outside of Jayden Daniels this week.
  • Says their offense is ahead of their defense and he needs the defense to catch up. Says they have to continue to build, recruit and coach to get the defense caught up. He feels the defense is making progress, even if it isn't at the rate they want it to.

LSU BASKETBALL 11/06 Kim Mulkey Postgame Press Conference Notes

- Says she is not surprised about the outcome and is disappointed in some of her players not being aggressive. They lacked leadership and fight and she thought that Colorado did exactly what she thought they would do. They were polished, hungry and shot the ball from the three. They will get back to work and dig a little bit deeper.

- She says she doesn't live with physical play. They did not have "that dog in them" tonight. Her true freshman Mikaylah Williams and sophomore Sa'Myah Smith gave everything they had tonight. Everything is fixable about her team but she knows they will have a good practice come wednesday.

- She doesn't think you can compare this team to last year. She thinks the locker room was affected by how Colorado is a good team.

- She asked if they had a good fan turnout. Says LSU loves sports and LSU fans love to support their team. She has no idea how many fans came out to Las Vegas but knows she sold out her arena and they appreciate what her team has built.

- Says that the zone did not affect them and they went to the zone to stay out of foul trouble. Colorado was very very good with helping each other. Says they (LSU) were terrible at helping each other out during the game and transition is big and nobody would or could guard Jaylyn Sherrod. The team's effort was not even there and when they get to practice and watch film it will be a come to Jesus moment.

- Says that being hungry has nothing to do with skill. Colorado lost to Iowa in the Sweet 16 by ten points and they have experience and minutes played together. She says she can't flip a switch and let her team all play together, but it will come, but does not know how soon it will come to where we are all smoother and can play together.

- Says you can't coach speed you either have it or you don't and Sherrod broke it down defensively. She says we need to get better and our game is getting better. Says she saw some upsets today in women's basketball but she doesn't like to be on the losing end.

- Says Mikaylah Williams and Sa'Myah Smith did very good. Particularly Mikaylah for her first ever college basketball game. Says you have to consider she is only a freshman and is very pleased with Mikaylah and Sa'Myah's performance tonight.

LIVE GAME THREAD LSU MBB vs. Mississippi Valley Live Thread *7pm CT*

Tonight, both the women and men tipoff their 2023=24 regular season. The Women's game will be nationally televised, but the Men's game is on ESPN+, so I'll be a doing a live thread for the game. Just wanted to post this early so you guys see it and know the game starts at 7pm CT, so tune back in around then for live updates from the game.

Some bullet points for the Tigers season opener:

  • Jalen Cook's waiver was denied by the NCAA, so he will not be on the court tonight. LSU sent more information to the NCAA to see if they'll overturn it, so we'll get an update to y'all as soon as we know more (which may be a while).
  • LSU is coming off a 132-44 win over Louisiana Christian in an exhibition game. The Tigers shot 73% in this game, so look for another high scoring night.
  • After the game we will speak with Coach McMahon and a couple of players. I will post some press conference notes after it's over and there will be a feature story of some kind coming out after the game as well, so make sure you tune in to those as well!

LSU BASKETBALL Do you guys want a live update threads for non-nationally televised games?

We've got two basketball games on tap tonight and we will be covering both events.

No.1 LSU Women open things up in Las Vegas (NV) against No.20 Colorado at 6:30 PM CT on TNT

LSU Men open up their season at home in the PMAC against Mississippi Valley State. This game is on ESPN+/SECN+

I don't want to do overkill with the live update threads all year long, so we probably won't do them on the games that are on national tv.

Do you guys want live update threads for the games that are on subscription services like ESPN+/SECN+ etc?

OFF TOPIC Quick Personal Update

I had mentioned this in another thread but my wife's father was in a battle with cancer. Today we received news that he passed. I'm traveling back home to Texas and will return next week.

I'm not going to he completely absent and we will have plenty of LSU coverage and I will still be putting stuff out. But please bear with me if our coverage has seemed off or seems off this week.

Carlos Stewart
  • Carlos said it's great to be back home. He was really excited to get back here and play in front of his family.
  • He said the guys are doing everything they can to not have a repeat of last season.
  • Wanted to transfer home and start playing for a bigger brand. Also had the added bonus of playing in the SEC.
  • Jordan Wright hit him up and tried to recruit him to come back to Louisiana and play for LSU with him.
  • Says he talked to Jalen Cook. He's feeling alright, but they know how much he would mean to this team. Says they have to move on and adjust to be successful. Feels they have enough talent to without him to win a lot of games.
  • Feels the team is competing hard in practice and has a lot of energy. They're preparing for practice just like a game because McMahon goes hard on them in practice. Said they felt the results during the game against LA Christian.
Tyrell Ward
  • Said he wanted to improve on being consistent. He also needed to stay patient with McMahons plan. Coach told him he needed to work on some things, and instead of taking it the wrong way, he stayed and worked to improve on those areas.
  • Feels this team has connected quicker this year than last year.
  • He's trying to help all of the new guys get through the growing pains of coming to a new school.
  • Says Jalen Cook is still practicing with him and with his experience, it's still helping them even if he can't play on gamedays.
  • Felt like he went through some growing pains in his freshman year, but found his groove down the stretch where he played well.
Matt McMahon
  • Trae Hannibal is out with illness, but should be at practice today. They expect Derek Fountain to be back by the game on Monday and Hunter Dean is dealing with a shoulder injury and is day-to-day.
  • They don't have a timeframe for hearing back from the NCAA about Jalen Cooks waiver (they sent additional information to see if they'll overturn their ruling). Says he's still practicing with the team to stay ready just in case.
  • Says he's not living in the past. He's focused on winning with this team and he feels the roster will be able to win games. They have an experienced roster and he's viewing it as a fresh start.
  • Wants to see his team play with energy and selflessness. Feels those need to be the foundation of this team. Wants to see improvement on the defensive side of the ball on Monday. Allowed too many drives and offensive boards.
  • Size and scoring ability were two of the main things he saw in Will Baker when he recruited him through the portal. Thinks he's a really good playmaker from the center position.
  • Feels the offense is going to become less screen-centric. Cook is a great ball screen player, but with him out, they have to go away from that and run some different offenses. Says they've been preparing for that since June.
  • Felt last year was a tough year for freshman across the country because there were so many 5th year players. Feels Tyrell Ward and Jalen Reed began to come on in the end of the season and he's excited for their sophomore season.
  • Says freshman Mike Williams III is consistent every day. He's a freshman, but he's already a leader on this team. He does a great job running the offense and he should play a big role this year.
  • He's excited for this season for Mwani Wilkinson. He battled injuries last season, but he's healthy now and is a very talented and athletic player. Plays defense very well and can guard multiple positions.
