COMMITMENT LSU lands four-star Ondre Evans, keeps recruiting momentum going for Tigers

Evans picked LSU over the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, NC State and others.

"I knew the minute camp was over that I have to be a Tiger. LSU checked all the boxes." Evans is the 3rd Tiger commitment this week.

RECRUITING June OV schedule

LSU BASEBALL Paul Skenes named 2023 Dick Howser Trophy Winner -- the best player in college baseball

LSU All-American pitcher Paul Skenes was named Thursday as the winner of the 2023 Dick Howser Trophy, given annually to the most outstanding player in NCAA Division I baseball.

Skenes joins LSU All-American first baseman Eddy Furniss – the 1998 winner of the Dick Howser Trophy – as the second Tiger to capture the nation’s top collegiate baseball award.

The Dick Howser Trophy not only honors a player with some of the best ability nationally, but it also is based upon the tenets of leadership, moral character and courage. The top draft choices for the upcoming Major League Baseball free agent draft usually are among the Howser Trophy finalists, but this is not a criterion for the eventual winner.

“Paul Skenes certainly is deserving of the 2023 Dick Howser Trophy,” Howser Trophy chairman David Feaster said. “He has established himself as head and shoulders above any pitcher in NCAA Division I this season as well as a team leader and community service champion. His tremendous talent also has helped LSU make the NCAA World Series field for the 19th time overall and the first time since 2017.”

Skenes, a junior from Lake Forest, Calif., leads the SEC in wins (12), strikeouts (188), earned run average (1.77), innings pitched (107.0) and opponent batting average (.170) He is ranked No. 2 on LSU’s all-time single-season strikeouts list, trailing only Ben McDonald, who recorded 202 strikeouts in 1989.

Skenes, Collegiate Baseball’s 2023 National Player of the Year and the 2023 SEC Pitcher of the Year, is No. 1 in the nation in strikeouts (188), strikeouts per nine innings (15.81) and WHIP (0.78), and he is No. 2 in the nation in ERA (1.77). He is No.3 in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio (10.44), and No. 6 in hits allowed per nine innings (5.47).

He has pledged $10 for every strikeout he records this season to Folds of Honor, a nonprofit organization that provides educational scholarships to the spouses and children of military and first responders who have died or been disabled.

A Florida native, Dick Howser was twice an All-America shortstop at Florida State (1957-58), then head coach of the Seminoles in 1979 after a career as a Major League player and coach.

After one year in the college ranks, he returned to the majors to manage the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals and won the World Series with the Royals in 1985. The baseball stadium on the Florida State campus is named for Howser, who died in 1987 after a battle with cancer.

RECRUITING Next commitment? New FutureCast.

I put in a new FutureCast in LSU's favor of landing Tennessee athlete Ondre Evans, who just camped last weekend. Evans plays receiver and corner for his high school team but is being recruited as CB at the next level. He's had an incredible spring with offers from LSU, Alabama, Georgia and more.

Evans confirms to me that he's announcing his commitment Friday, June 16.

Looks like he could be the next commitment in the 2024 class. Also, Rivals is releasing updated rankings this week and I fully expect him to be bumped up to a four-star. He's got the size and speed. Here's an article written on him following the Rivals Cincinnati camp.

RECRUITING More on Kylan Billiot

I spent the morning getting cooked at the Terrebonne 7on7 watching Kylan and the other local teams from the area.

He was back at LSU yesterday with his mom. It was her first time there. He wanted her to see the place and meet the coaches before announcing his commitment.

"She was amazed by it and feels its the right place for me," he told me this morning.

They were very nervous to meet Brian Kelly for the first time. Kelly wasn't at the camp a few days ago when Billiot earned the offer due to a family wedding. Billiot said it felt like he was meeting the President. He had a list of notes in his phone. Things that are important to him and things he wants to do and accomplish. He read his notes to BK, who answered all his questions perfectly, he said.

LSU BASEBALL LSU first baseman/DH Jared Jones receives freshman All-America recognition

LSU first baseman/designated hitter Jared Jones has received Second-Team Freshman All-America recognition from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Jones, a product of Marietta, Ga., is hitting .304 this season with 12 doubles, 14 homers, 45 RBI and 37 runs scored. He is fourth on the LSU club in homers and fifth in RBI.

Jones, who was named last month to the 2023 Freshman All-SEC team by the league’s head coaches, homered twice and drove in five runs in LSU’s series sweep over Alabama (April 28-30).

He batted .500 (7-for-14) in a four-game week vs. Tulane (April 11) and Kentucky (April 13-15) with three doubles, two homers, five RBI and six runs. In LSU’s SEC series win over Kentucky, Jones hit .400 (4-for-10) with two homers, five RBI and five runs.

Jones batted .600 (6-for-10) the week of March 28-April 1 with one double, one homer, one RBI and five runs scored. He was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs on April 1 vs. Tennessee

He hit .462 (6-for-13) in the Texas A&M series (March 17-19) with one homer, eight RBI and one run. Jones led the Tigers to the series-clinching victory on March 18 by going 4-for-5 at the plate with a three-run homer and a pair of two-run singles for a total of seven RBI.

Jones was named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week on March 13 after he batted .600 (6-for-10) from March 6-12 with four homers, 11 RBI and five runs. He homered four times in four consecutive plate appearances over the course of the Tigers’ games versus Samford.

LSU BASEBALL Baseball fans are invited to send off the team to Omaha Wednesday morning

LSU fans will have the opportunity to send the baseball team off to the College World Series on Wednesday as the team departs Alex Box Stadium for Omaha, Neb.

The send-off will take place on Wednesday at 9 a.m. CT outside of Alex Box Stadium near Gate 1. Fans coming to campus for the send-off may park in the Hall of Fame lot on the third base side of the stadium.

LSU, which has won six national championships, is appearing in the College World Series for the first time since 2017 and for the 19th time overall.

RECRUITING A few recruiting tidbits following LSU's camp

A few things I picked up this weekend while at the LSU camp...

-- Joel Rogers is announcing his college decision this afternoon and I'm confident in my FutureCast on LSU.

-- The offer from LSU to Kylan Billiot was major. They've kept tabs on him for a year now and his body and game and continued to develop in that time and Cortez Hankton was impressed with his work on campus this week to extend the offer. I immediately put in a FC on him to the Tigers and I think that could happen sooner rather than later.

-- Yes, Tayvion Galloway backed off his pledge Sunday night following his multi-day visit. But looking forward to this weekend and LSU is hosting JUCO TE Connor Gilbreath on an OV.

-- I currently have a FC in on Holy Cross WR Koby Young to LSU but all signs point to that not happening (or at least not right now). Young has not visited as much as others in-state and he hasn't camped. He's coming off a visit to Georgia Tech and there's some confidence in that program that they could reel him, AND John Curtis ATH Michael Turner Jr., in this class. For now, I'm moving my FC off of LSU on Young.

-- One more thing on WRs in the 2024 class: currently the Tigers have JoJo Stone committed and look to be quickly trending for Billiot, they just unofficially hosted Dre'lon Miller Friday then Saturday he participated in the 7on7 and looked good. He has set his commitment day for later this month and still has a visit to USC set up before then. From sources I've spoken to on him, it sounds to close to call. LSU is in the mix along with USC and Texas A&M. Hankton has known Miller's dad since their college days so that benefits LSU but regardless of what he announces on June 29, his recruitment will still be active from school's until he signs. I do think LSU needs to land a wideout like Miller or Cam Coleman, who's taking his OV later this month, to pair with Stone, potentially Billiot then maybe Jelani Watkins or whoever else might pop between now and December.

-- Lastly, I have a story coming from LSU OL commit Khayree Lee, who looked impressive at the OL/DL camp this weekend, and he talked about recruiting his teammate, four-star DB Wardell Mack, daily to join him. Many believe Mack ultimately ends up at LSU, however, over the weekend I've also heard that Florida State and Florida are pushing hard for him and are making it known how many safeties LSU already has in this class. Plenty of schools see Mack as a safety at the next level, though, he has the ability to play anywhere in the secondary. LSU will continue to push for him and make it known that he could be a CB or S with the Tigers. I'm not moving his FC off of LSU but just something I wanted to share on him.

Baseball Weather

Where are ALL the armchair coaches today? Its 1:43 did any of you look at the radar in the Baton Rouge area today? Thunderstorms.
Instead of jumping on the coach bashing bandwagon. We in south La in June. Thunderstorms happen almost every afternoon and can develop rapidly and no one can predict where or when.
It was an example of great common sense thinking
Coach wanted Skeenes to pitch without interruption knowing the chances of winning were almost guaranteed!
Thanks Coach Johnson for not caving in!
