LSU FOOTBALL LSU opens spring ball March 9

Looking to build off of last year’s 10-win season, LSU returns to practice next week when the Tigers open spring drills on March 9.

LSU coach Brian Kelly’s second-year roster includes 36 returning letterwinners and 26 players who started at least one game a year ago. In its first season under Kelly, LSU posted a 10-4 overall mark, won the SEC Western Division title and beat Purdue, 63-7, in the Citrus Bowl.

Offensively, LSU returns players who accounted for 94 percent of its rushing yards, all but seven of its 3,770 passing yards and three of its top four receivers, including 1,000-yard receiver Malik Nabers.

The Tigers also return four of its five starters on the offensive line including Freshman All-America Will Campbell and Freshman All-SEC Emery Jones.

Jayden Daniels is back for his second season with the Tigers after setting LSU records for rushing yards (885) and rushing TDs (11) by a quarterback. Daniels capped the year as one of only two players nationally to pass for over 2,500 yards and rush for over 800 yards.

Defensively, junior linebacker Greg Penn (77 tackles) is LSU’s top returning tackler, while Freshman All-America linebacker Harold Perkins is back after leading the Tigers in both sacks (7.5) and tackles for loss (13.0). Perkins ranked third on the team in tackles with 72.

Third-team All-America defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo is back to lead a defensive front that includes defensive end Maason Smith, who missed all but one series of 2022 with an injury.

All of LSU’s specialists from 2022 are back including punter Jay Bramblett, placekicker Damian Ramos and kickoff specialist Nathan Dibert.

LSU will have 15 practice dates during the months of March and April culminating with a final spring workout on April 22 in Tiger Stadium. Details and the format of LSU’s final spring session on April 22 have yet to be determined.

Following practices on March 9 and 10, LSU will take a week off for spring break and then return to practice on March 21. LSU closes out the first month of spring practice with workouts on March 23, 25 and 30.

LSU will host its annual Pro Day for those players who have declared for the 2023 NFL Draft on March 29. The annual LSU Coaches Clinic will take place on April 13-15 with former Tiger All-America Booger McFarland serving as the keynote speaker.

UGA story, what a trainwreck this is....

oh, even worse than we were expecting.

If they offer reckless and racing, he should take it immediately. Borderline leaving the scene, and a case for manslaughter could be made. Maybe Burrow smoking a cigar IS in fact a better way to celebrate after all. This is really really sad.

A few of my thoughts from over this past weekend

1. Let's start with the Monday report that came out from The Advocate regarding cornerback Sevyn Banks, who I have confirmed, has quietly entered his name in the NFL Draft. He has the size, speed and athleticism to play in the NFL however his problem seemed to always be consistency but now the biggest concern has to be injuries. Banks was carted off for the Auburn game with a bruised spinal cord and never suited back up for the Tigers. Prior to that, he dealt with knee injuries throughout his career. We all just assumed he was returning to Baton Rouge this fall because he has one year of eligibility remaining and an announcement was never made publicly but he did not need to declare for the draft by the underclassman date of Jan. 16 since he's a senior.

With all of that being said, I understand the decision for him with his injury history but it's also a head scratcher too because I have no idea where he'll be taken (or IF he'll be taken) but it sounds like he's been working and preparing for LSU's pro day, which would be the first time in a while we'll see him on the field. Laterrance Welch is now the lone scholarship cornerback returning in 2023. Thankfully, the Tigers rebuilt the secondary using the transfer portal and high school signees.

2. Speaking of high school signees, Michael Daugherty announced over the weekend his intention to withdraw from LSU and enter the transfer portal (the next window begins May 1). The freshman just enrolled at LSU in January after signing during the Early Signing Period in December. Was this shocking? Sort of. Not too often we see players withdraw after only being on campus for such a short period of time. Is it a hit to the secondary? No. He wasn't expected to compete for playing time at this time. I think it was the right choice for his career.

3. How about those Lady Tigers? What a helluva regular season Kim Mulkey & Co. just wrapped up Sunday by defeating Mississippi State, 74-59, in front of the largest crowd in Pete Maravich Assembly Center history. The Tigers ended the regular season 27-1 and clinched the No. 2 seed in the SEC Tournament.

LSU will play its first game of the tournament on Friday at 6 p.m. CT in Bon Secours Arena in Greenville, South Carolina on the SEC Network against the winner of Thursday’s matchup between No. 10 Auburn and No. 7 Georgia.

By the way, the LSU Women’s Basketball team will hold a sendoff Wednesday at 12:45 p.m. CT in front of Tiger Stadium (Gate 6) as the Tigers head to Greenville, South Carolina as the No. 2 seed in the SEC Tournament. Fans coming to campus for the sendoff can park in lot 404.

4. Wow, welcome to the 2023 season, Dylan Crews! The LSU junior centerfielder was named Monday as the SEC Co-Player of the Week after an incredible start to the season. In the four games LSU played in last week, Crews batted a sizzling .714 (10-for-14) with three doubles, seven RBI and nine runs scored. He was voted the MVP of the Round Rock Classic, leading LSU to the tournament title. Crews hit .692 (9-for-13) in three games at Round Rock with three doubles, seven RBI and six runs. All of that led to Jay Johnson having some very impressive words about Crews: “Dylan Crews is the best player I’ve ever coached, and I had 14 former players play in the major leagues last year,” LSU head coach Jay Johnson said. “That tells you how good he is."

Crews very well might be the No. 1 overall MLB draft pick.

LSU's next game is Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against Texas at Disch-Falk Field in Austin.

5. Recruiting has been dead as of lately but things are about to get chaotic again as things open back up on March 1. LSU will host multiple junior day events throughout the spring with big recruiting weekends looking like March 4, March 10-12 and April 1 weekend. I have a full running list of recruits coming in but that second weekend in March has the potential to be very interesting due to the Battle New Orleans 7-on-7 tournament taking place.

From what I've gathered, here's a few popular teams and players expecting to attend, many of which will end up visiting LSU at some point during the weekend:

Teams | Louisiana Bootleggers, F3, Miami Immortals, 24K, Raw Miami, Deuces, Defcon Texas, Arkansas Elite, Tennessee Select, and 215 Playmakers just to name a few.

LSU commits/targets in attendance... I'll have a preview with more confirmed names as we get closer to that event.

Just watched LSU beat UT 3-0…

Game was highly contested. LSU won with a Dugas 3 run Har in top of 9th. Fantastic game by both teams. Like the end of the season.

What was very impressive to me was the almost professional performance and composure of the pitchers. They were very relaxed and didn’t lose their cool under pressure. Something negative happen they just took the ball and closed out the inning in a workmanlike manner. I think getting that pitching coach is responsible for that and if LSU wins it all this year he should get a lot of credit.

It certainly did not look like a college midweek performance.

Portal insights.....

It's been discussed here, but the portal is a real threat to the dominance of the Bama's, who's model is still highly dependant on high school hits. Points are well made in this article.
