LSU FOOTBALL LSU will wrap up spring ball with game Saturday

LSU wraps up its second spring under head coach Brian Kelly on Saturday as the Tigers will hold the National L Club Spring Game presented by Tony Chachere’s in Tiger Stadium.

The Tigers will take the field at 1 p.m. Gates to Tiger Stadium open at noon with all seating on the west side. Fans can enter the stadium through gates 1-6 on the west side. Admission is free and most parking lots on campus will be free and open to fans.

Saturday’s final spring session in Tiger Stadium will be streamed on SEC Network+ with Mike Morgan and Aaron Murray on the call. The announcers will be on the field during the telecast and will conduct in-game interviews with Kelly.

The contest will also be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and can be heard locally on 104.5/104.9 FM with Gordy Rush, Doug Moreau and Jacob Hester on the call.

The format for the scrimmage portion of the event will be offense vs. defense for four quarters or as long as time permits. The Tigers will have two 15-minute quarters for the first half followed by a pair of either 10 or 12-minute quarters in the second half.

LSU will use a special scoring system for the defense as that unit will be awarded seven points for a turnover or fourth down stop. The defense will be credited with five points for forcing a missed field goal and two points for a pass breakup, missed two-point conversion or a missed point-after touchdown. The defense will receive one point for a sack or a tackle for loss.

Offense and special teams will have normal scoring.

LSU will take the field at 1 p.m. for its normal pregame warmup followed by live special teams work and scripted redzone situations. LSU will then go to its full-scale tackle scrimmage. The quarterbacks will be protected and won’t be tackled.

LSU quarterbacks Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier along with true freshman Rickie Collins will all be in action for the scrimmage.

Noah Cain and freshman Trey Holly are expected to get the bulk of the work at running back tomorrow, while Kyren Lacy, Malik Nabers, Chris Hilton and Brian Thomas will all be in action at wide receiver.

Preseason All-America candidate Harold Perkins along with safety Greg Brooks are both back and will be in action. Perkins is coming off one of the best rookie seasons in LSU football history with 72 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. Brooks, in his first year with the Tigers in 2022, had 66 tackles, a sack and a pair of interceptions for the SEC Western Division Champion Tigers.

Some key newcomers in action for the first time in Tiger Stadium on Saturday include: linebacker Omar Speights (Oregon State), cornerbacks Denver Harris (Texas A&M) and JK Johnson (Ohio State), and Jack linebacker Ovie Oghoufo (Texas).

The National L Club Spring Game presented by Tony Chachere’s is part of a busy day on campus as LSU is hosting the Alumni Gold Track and Field Meet at Bernie Moore Track Stadium beginning at 10:30 a.m., while the nationally-ranked softball team hosts Mississippi State at Tiger Park at 7 p.m.

LSU FOOTBALL Tiger Stadium field will have a new look for spring game

The field in Tiger Stadium will have a different look on Saturday when the National L Club Spring Game takes place.

The Path logo, a new branding for the LSU Football program under head coach Brian Kelly, will be painted at the 50-yard line where the traditional “Eye of the Tiger” has been for games. Represented visually with the state of Louisiana, The Path is the process any player goes through in Kelly’s program from the moment they are recruited until long after they leave the University with a degree and as a champion.

In addition, the endzones will be painted in a manner that resembles the stripes on the LSU football helmet with LSU placed in the middle.

There will also be two National L Club Spring Game logos on separate sides of the field at the 25-yard line.

Saturday’s field painting is only for the spring game as the field will revert back to its traditional look when the Tigers take the field against Grambling in the home opener in September.

RECRUITING LSU hosting two out-of-state targets today

Just confirmed that LSU is hosting 2024 targets Charleston Collins and Courtney Crutchfield today. The duo is expected to make their commitment announcement tomorrow and it is not expected to be LSU. I changed my FutureCast earlier this week from LSU to Arkansas on Collins. Never had one in for Crutchfield.

How does the visit today change things? Still working on that. Does it change things? Still unsure. Keep y’all posted once I know more.

LSU FOOTBALL Tuesday practice notes

— Big news from Tuesday morning’s practice: Maason Smith returned to individual drills for the first time this spring as he works his way back from that awful ACL injury at the start of last season.

— Freshman DL Dashawn Womack also participated in individual drills for first time.

— After missing practice last week with an ankle injury, safety Greg Brooks Jr. returned to practice today. I think he’s going to have a monster season this fall and really move up a lot of draft boards.

— John Jancek said LSU's returners have been Greg Clayton, Kyle Parker, Sage Ryan and Noah Cain, and then Aaron Anderson expected too once he’s healthy this fall.

RECRUITING LSU targets announcing decision Friday

For the longest time it sounded like LSU was the leader for Charleston Collins, (LSU just entered the picture for Crutchfield in mid February and I never thought the Tigers were in the lead for him), but the latest information I got late last night was they plan to announce their decision Friday and it sounds as if it won't be LSU. The duo have recently said they want to play together in college. I'll be putting in a FutureCast on Collins to Arkansas today. If anything changes between now and Friday I will keep y'all posted.

LSU FOOTBALL Updates from Brian Kelly ahead of spring game

-- Jayden Daniels is over 210 pounds and really focused this offseason on bulking up. He's thicker and stronger at this point than last fall, BK said.

-- It's too early for Maason Smith to play in the spring game but he can do all of the drill work, BK said. He'll partake in his first contact drills when LSU's begins preseason camp.

-- BK is happy with how the team learned how to prepare and practice the right way and stayed healthy in spring

-- The focus throughout spring has been on the little details, per BK. He's expecting the offense to look like one of the best in the country while the defense should be impacted by the new transfers.

-- Bk specifically mentions Jaxon Howard, Jacobian Guillory, Fitzgerald West, Tygee Hill, Paris Shand and Quency Wiggins as players who made the most of their extended reps this spring with Smith and Wingo out.

-- DB, OL and RB are three areas BK mentioned about competitive battles will happen

-- BK said WR Kyren Lacy was up and down last season but has been much more consistent in spring and expects that to continue into fall this season
