Here's my quick, early observations...
-- In my years covering LSU, I felt as though as saw less today than ever before in our 20 minute media period and I'm sure that was on purpose to not show much and keep expectations low coming off a successful season. Offense and defense never worked together while we were out there. We'll see if we get more as spring comes along.
-- The biggest name we noticed not at practice was RB John Emery Jr. -- in fact, Frank Wilson only had three RBs working with him during our media session: Noah Cain, Malachi Lane and Trey Holly (in that order for reps). Brian Kelly said during his press conference Emery is focused on academics and only academics at this time. Seems like it's unclear when/if he'll return to the football field for LSU.
-- Players spotted on the side working: Maason Smith, Matthew Langlois, Duce Chestnut, Corren Norman, Josh Williams and Mason Taylor. Others who are out due to injury: Aaron Anderson, Jordan Jefferson, Mekhi Wingo, Charles Turner, Armoni Goodwin and Bryce Langston.
-- 2024 LSU quarterback commitment Colin Hurley was on the sideline watching Joe Sloan and the quarterbacks the entire time media was out there.
-- I watched Rickie Collins for a few minutes behind Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier and the true freshman was very accurate with the ball at first glance. These first 15 practices for Collins will be crucial for his young career. Nussmeier had a minor corrective procedure done, per Brian Kelly, and isn't not fully healthy just yet but will be in a bout a week.
-- New grad transfer OL Mason Lunsford won't join the team until fall camp.
-- A few other things that caught my eye linebacker Omar Speights has really good size to him along with fellow LB West Weeks who looks like he bulked up somewhat.
-- The OL was noticeably thin, even Brian Kelly mentioned it in his press conference. With Turner out, Marlon Martinez and Bo Bordelon took reps at center.
-- At the JACK position, transfer Ovie Oghoufo and Bradyn Swinson both have really good size and were 1-2 in the reps followed by freshman Jaxon Howard.
-- I like the moves and additions LSU made in the secondary in the offseason, it was necessary to rebuild but both position groups will need to remain healthy into the season later this year. At corner, JK Johnson, Denver Harris and Javien Toviano shuffled in and out all within the 1s and we're likely to continue to see that. At safety, Major Burns and Greg Brooks are the guys but there's not much proven depth. Langlois is still dealing with injuries and Sage Ryan was at nickel (along with Jordan Allen today). I guess we could see Duce Chestnut at nickel and Sage at safety during the season, but Chestnut isn't fully healthy yet. Only other safeties that LSU will have (as of right now) this fall is freshmen Ryan Yaites and Kylin Jackson. Safety is a spot they're actively keeping an eye on in the transfer portal, which the next window is May 1.
-- The Tigers practice Friday (closed to the media) and then are off next week on spring break. Practice resumes March 21.
