LSU FOOTBALL Jayden Daniels wins Manning Award

Yet another award for the best player in college football this season.

The Manning award is given to the best QB in college football and is the only award that takes postseason play into account. Daniels becomes the third LSU QB to win the award since it's inception in 2004, joining Joe Burrow (2019) and Jamarcus Russell (2006). LSU is the only school with 3 or more players to win this award.

LSU FOOTBALL LSU to promote Cortez Hankton and Joe Sloan to Co-Offensive Coordinators

This morning it was announced that Joe Sloan AND Cortez Hankton will be promoted to Co-Offensive Coordinators.

When Denbrock left for ND, this was the move that Brian Kelly made for the bowl game, and it seems he was pleased with their performance.

RECRUITING I'm over 5*'s, especially 5* Defensive linemen.

In the last 20 years we've signed 16 defensive lineman ranked by Rivals as either a 5* or a 6.0 4* (which basically means someone else had them as a 5*). This is the list:

04
Claude Wroten*, DT
Glenn Dorsey, DT

05
Al Jones, DE
Ricky Jean Francois, DE

06
Al Woods*, DT

07
Joseph Barksdale, DT
Sidell Corley, DE

09
Chris Davenport*, DT

10
J.R. Ferguson, DE

11
Anthony Johnson*, DT

13
Frank Herron*, DE

14
Travonte Valentine, DT

16
Glen Logan, DE

17
Tyler Shelvin*, DT

21
Maason Smith*, DT

22
Quency Wiggins*, DE

To be honest, our entire list of 5*'s is pretty depressing with only the odd glimmer or spark here and there... and now you're going to have to pay through the nose just to see if they fail to make an impact, which - based on history - they probably will. I say use that money to bargain shop for those 4*'s you have faith in and the rest of it on proven commodities in the transfer portal. I'm done with 5*'s prima donnas, let them be someone else's problem.

If they're in-state, ok sure, give them a look, but quit breaking the bank on chasing them all over the country. History shows they ain't worth it.

RECRUITING Four-star quarterback George MacIntyre set to announce decision

MacIntyre, who visited for the Texas A&M game, put LSU in his top-three SEC programs along with Alabama and Tennessee. After the Tigers landed Bryce Underwood, the chances of MacIntyre committing to LSU dropped. The Tigers already have the No. 2 quarterback in the class in Underwood, and for MacIntyre, it sounds like Tennessee is the move right now.

He's announcing his commitment Monday.

INTEL The Situation Room: Latest intel on OC search, recruiting and more

Welcome to The Situation Room

What is the Situation Room? For any first-time readers of the series, The Situation Room, not unlike the one in the White House is an intelligence management room. A place where you can come get the latest inside scoop on LSU news and recruiting information.

It’s our version of a popular series across the Rivals network. A lot of sites that do these types of reports call them “War Room”.

With that said, lets gets right to it.

The latest on Offensive Staffing

Things have been quiet in regard to the coaching search on the offensive side of the ball. That goes in line with Brian Kelly’s MO, but we’ve heard that part of the reason there hasn’t been a lot of chatter on that front is because there continues to be a very real possibility that Brian Kelly opts to promote one of his current assistants. The likely name that continues to be mentioned by Death Valley Insider sources is co-interim offensive coordinator Joe Sloan.

He was a name we discussed in our last update on the OC search and to be honest, not much has changed on that front. His name continues to be mentioned and it’s starting to feel like Sloan for OC is starting to gain a lot more traction.

If Sloan is the hire, then he would likely remain in charge of the quarterback room and LSU would likely hire an offensive staffer to coach tight ends, which was a vacancy left when Mike Denbrock departed for Notre Dame.

A few names that have come up in conversations on who could coach Tight Ends if LSU does indeed promote from within.

A couple of names to keep an eye on for TE

John McNulty
– Analyst Alabama: McNulty coached Tight Ends for two years under Brian Kelly at Notre Dame in 2020 and 2021. He was the offensive coordinator at Boston College in 2022 and most recently an offensive analyst at Alabama in 2023. He has 30-plus years of coaching experience on the offensive side of the ball and had coached just about every position on offense at one time or another. He also has experience coaching special teams. He doesn’t exactly fit the mold of the recent hires that have deep Louisiana ties, but his name has come up in connection to LSU’s search.

Slade Nagle – Tulane OC/QB’s/AHC. One name that has come up in connection with LSU is former Tulane offensive coordinator and interim head coach Slade Nagle. He fits the bill of recent hires with Louisiana ties. Nagle played QB at both McNeese State and Clemson has coached for 20-plus years with stints at Northwestern State, LSU, McNeese State and has been at Tulane since 2016. He’s been an offensive coordinator, assistant head coach, has coached every position on offense outside of offensive line and has multiple years as both a tight ends coach and special teams coach.

Brian Kelly Comments on Defensive Hires

On Corey Raymond - “Corey’s passion for LSU and the desire for our program to have the best defensive back unit in the country really stood out,” Kelly said. “Corey’s tremendous knowledge and experience, along with his recruiting success, make him a great addition to a strong defensive staff.”

On Kevin Peoples - “Kevin develops his players physically, technically, as young men and student-athletes as well any coach in the profession,” Kelly said. “I’m excited to pair him with Bo Davis on our defensive line giving LSU a pair of elite coaches on our defensive front.”

On Jake Olsen - “We are thrilled to welcome Jake back to Baton Rouge,” Kelly said. “He’s a young and hungry coach with an elite defensive mind that will bring great continuity to our defensive staff. Jake has spent the last three years working with Coach Baker and has extensive experience in the state of Louisiana. I have no doubt Jake will bring a great sense of pride and understanding to what it means to work for LSU.”

Recruiting

Bussey is a guy we’ve been talking about for a while now and his name continues to come up in the recruiting circles. The Rivals five-star athlete is still committed to Texas A&M but is ironing out final visits prior to signing his letter of intent on National Signing Day in February.

He’s visiting UGA on Jan.26, LSU on Jan.31 and the Aggies will get the curtain call on Feb. 2 which is expected to be his last visit before signing in February.

LSU continues to push for the flip and getting him on campus is a big win, but it still feels like they’ve got a bit of ground to make up even with all the changes and uncertainty with the Texas A&M staff. They’ve got the aces to get it done, but they’ll have their work cut out for them as Bussy’s recruitment carries on down to the final moments before National Signing Day.

Transfer Portal Tidbits

One of Alabama’s recent portal additions is former Rivals four-star DB Jameer Grimsley. LSU is expected to make a strong push here and new DB coach Corey Raymond will likely lead the charge as he’s got as good of a relationship with Grimsley as anyone. Florida and LSU are the two schools out in front early on. Look for the Tigers to make a strong push here. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the former Rivals250 DB end up in Baton Rouge, but Florida is close to home and can’t be discounted either. Florida State would be another potential school to keep an eye on as when Grimsley committed to Alabama, FSU was in the mix late.

Login to view embedded media Another name to keep an eye on is Trey Amos who entered the portal earlier this week. Amos is a Louisiana native and former high school teammate of Kyren Lacy. LSU is expected to make a push here as well and will look to get Amos back in Baton Rouge for a visit.

Amos played 209 snaps for Alabama at cornerback in 2023 and was Alabama’s third highest graded cornerback outside of Terrion Arnold and Kool-Aid McKinstry.

Although a legacy at LSU, Parker Fulghum has decided to carve out his own path with another team of Tigers. The Evangel Christian wide receiver took his recruitment down to two programs as a preferred walk-on, committing to Clemson on Friday.

Fulghum, whose father is former LSU quarterback Josh Booty, canceled his official visit to LSU this weekend. He made the decision so that he could announce his commitment Friday, his grandfather’s birthday.

“My grandpa has always been a coach on every team I've played on, my mentor and father figure over the years,” Fulghum said. “It really worked out perfectly that I could be able to do it early on his birthday after canceling my LSU visit.”

Fulghum took an official visit to Clemson last weekend.

“Clemson is going to give me a great opportunity to play early and find my way on the field as well as set me up for major success on the way through college,” Fulghum said.

Four-star edge Max Granville said last week he wasn’t sure if he’d be visiting LSU this month following the staff changes. He told Death Valley Insider on Thursday that he believes he is going to Baton Rouge soon, but he doesn’t have a date set in stone.
