COMMITMENT LSU flips LB Christian Brathwaite

As we mentioned yesterday, LSU flipped 2023 linebacker Christian Brathwaite, who had been pledged to Baylor since early this year.

But after a visit this past weekend, the three-star recruit was ready to flip his decision.

Brathwaite is now the 23rd commitment for LSU in the 2023 class, and he fills a position of need for Brian Kelly and Matt House.

I do anticipate him moving up the rankings for the next update.

LSU FOOTBALL Open Discussion - LSU vs Alabama

I'll be honest: three weeks ago I thought LSU didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of beating Alabama but this sudden change of pace and direction the offense is heading with Jayden Daniels has me legitimately believing if LSU plays it's best ball in two weeks then the Tigers can upset Bama. Obviously needing to start fast, limit penalties and special teams miscues.

Have a feeling it'll be a high scoring game that may be determined by who has ball last or something really close similar to TN-Bama.

How y'all feeling? Thoughts?

LSU FOOTBALL Player Breakdowns: Perk, B. Thomas, Emery Jones, Mason Taylor

Following up on last week's breakdown of Jay Ward, Mekhi Wingo, Will Campbell and Malik Nabers I will give my personal scouting report on 4 players picked last week (Brian Thomas, Emery Jones, Harold Perkins, Mason Taylor). Feel free to suggest some more to be done next week.

** On player comps: You never comp someone to an average player. That said, by no means does a player comp mean that said player will be as good as the comp.

Harold Perkins: 6-1, 225, Freshman
Player Comp: Lavonte David

Strengths:
Insane speed
Athleticism
Instincts
Multi-level 3-down potential
Fluidity
Aggressiveness
Closing speed
Solid tackler

There's so much to love about this young man's game. He is a modern do-it-all athlete at the linebacker position and his physical abilities mirror that of some LSU greats in recent years: Devin White, Patrick Queen, Kwon Alexander most notably. Perkins ability to close on the ball carrier is unique and reminiscent of Buccaneers great Lavonte David. He is young, so you see some initial steps out of position at times, but his ability to recover and finish is as good as anyone in the country and he is still a freshman. Perkins's ability to flip his hips and change direction are elite and one of the traits that should help him transition into a multi-level defender, as he's relegated to blitz packages and run fitting. His overall athleticism, fluidity and speed should allow him to become a versatile piece that can also provide contributions in coverage.

LSU has used him well, although not enough at times, by allowing him to bring pressure or play the spy against mobile quarterbacks. Perkins's burst and closing speed is often noticed most when he is the backside defender chasing down stretch and jet sweeps from the backside. He takes hard angles in pursuit and reacts well to his keys for a young linebacker. This kid has future All-American written all over him.

Emery Jones: 6-4, 315, Freshman
Player Comp: La'El Collins

Strengths:
Physicality
Athleticism
Punch
Finishing Blocks
Leg Drive
Improving footwork
Nastiness

The right side of LSU's line has been stellar in the running game and has been fairly solid in pass protection in recent weeks. Freshman Emery Jones is a big reason why as the young mauler has proven to be worthy and capable of being LSU's starting right tackle. Jones isn't the tallest tackle (LSU lists him at 6-6 LoL) and he adds to the natural advantages it may present in regards to playing leverage, but Jones amplifies it by firing off low and showing tremendous power in his hips as he uncoils to initiate contact. He does a good job getting his feet in position for the assignment and shows the athleticism to handle the edge in kick step or climb to the second level in certain blocking schemes. His initial punch is powerful, although he can get caught lunging from time to time, but he recovers fairly well. Jones shows great lower and upper body strength for his age which is apparent in his ability to bend back the opposition and create a thud with his initial punch. But it is his leg drive that puts the most pressure on defenders as he often obliterates the down lineman in front of him while maintaining a flat back and the desire to finish with authority.

Jones is a finisher. He is extremely physical at this stage of his development which was paramount in getting him the lineup early. He is magnificent on kick out blocks using good foot quickness to get in position which allows his strength and tenacity to take hold. Jones is longer than he is tall, with quite a wingspan for a guy sniffing 6-4, which he uses well to lock out at times. Like Campbell, he can initially lose the hand fighting battle but does a good job grappling for position.

Brain Thomas: 6-4, 215, Sophomore
Player Comp: Herman Moore
Strengths:
High Pointing
Smooth out of his breaks
Soft Hands
Athleticism
Short area quickness
Skillset for bigger receiver

Everyone knew there was a lot of talent in the LSU wide receiver room and it was guys like Brian Thomas that we were all looking forward to seeing. Well, he has shown all the ability necessary to be an impact receiver in this league. BT's best attributes are his frame/athleticism combo that he takes full advantage of to high point balls and contort his body to make tougher catches. He is a solid 6-4 with long arms and big hands that he uses in unison to tower over smaller defenders. His basketball background is apparent when Thomas attacks the ball. This is something we all knew he had coming out of high school, but is his ever-improving skillset and fluidity that is turning him into an all-around receiver. Thomas has shown some craftiness in his releases, the way he attacks leverage and his ability to set someone up for exploitation at the top of the route. His ability to transition, shift his body weight and get out of his breaks is impressive for a guy his size.

While Thomas has above average short area quickness for his size, likely attributed to basketball, he is still 6-4 and over 200 pounds, so gearing down and accelerating is still below that of smaller, quicker receivers. There are times corners seize the moment and close the cushion while he is transition or simply are able to undercut routes with a smoother transition of their own. This will always be his biggest hinderance, but he has already shown that he is quickly improving in this regard. Thomas is looking like a solid NFL prospect at this stage of his development.

Mason Taylor: 6-5, 240, Freshman
Player Comp: Kyle Rudolph
Strengths:
Well rounded game
Reliable hands
Decent athleticism
Run Blocking
Strength
Technique/Skill
Physicality

It wasn't a surprise to see LSU give freshman tight end Mason Taylor significant snaps early, but it has been somewhat surprising to see him lockdown the starting spot and not look back. Tight ends don't routinely transition to early playing time in the SEC, but Taylor's game is so well rounded that he checks off a lot of boxes. Once you take his physique, physicality and his willingness and ability as a run blocker, you have yourself an All-Freshmen Team candidate. MT has won his fair share of battles in the trenches blocking the edge for LSU. He fights in the running game, showing good strength, technique and tenacity. He has shown above average athleticism for the position as well, which shows up as a pass catcher for LSU. He does a good job working in between the hashes, shows an understanding of zone coverage and when to sit and possesses enough athleticism to make things difficult for linebackers trying to run with him. He is assertive after the catch as well which has allowed him to be productive after the catch. He doesn't fight the ball as a pass catcher and the only issues that have surfaced thus far are concentration related. He shows both soft hands when catching uncontested balls and strong hands when securing the ball in traffic.

Taylor doesn't have elite explosiveness, speed or quickness, but he is adequate enough in those aspects to be really good when coupled with his ability to catch the ball, his overall skillset and his advanced technical level as a blocker. He won't likely become a vertical threat, but one has to respect his ability to work 15-yards and in in the passing game. He should be a valuable redzone option in time as well.

RECRUITING Visitor for Bama game

I’m expecting a major turn out next weekend and we’ll have a running thread going next week but seems as though 2025 QB Colin Hurley will be back in Tiger Stadium to catch the game.

LSU FOOTBALL Answering this week's LSU Mailbag questions

Happy bye week, guys. This week worked out perfectly for me with a little less content because my five-month old was home all week with an ear infection and it's hard to get a whole lot accomplished when he's home and wanting to be held, but he's better and back at daycare now.

Y'all sent in some really good questions this week and did my best to answer all of them I think.

Would be interesting, for me, to find out more about the staff. If possible? Any snippets on their experience at LSU? Nothing that would not be intrusive on their personal life; but, how are they settling in. Are they happy to be here? What's it like behind the scenes, in Tigerland?

That would take a lot of digging and interview requests through LSU to give you really good answers on that, perhaps after the season it's a request I can make, but I'll tell you this: it feels like this group is enjoying the season more than the last few years and the players AND recruits love this group of coaches and staffers. It feels like they're setting themselves up to be together for a while.

What does this team need to improve on to beat Bama?

Limit special teams errors, start fast, continue playing Jayden Daniels like the previous two games and spy Harold Perkins on Bryce Young the entire game. Perkins literally might be the difference maker for me in this one if he can hit Young early and often.

Reports on Bech and Emery? Any word on Dellinger's return and what effect does this have on the O-Line regarding players moving position?

Jack Bech has been dealing with a strained back but will be back to face Alabama. John Emery on the other hand, well, he's day t- day, per Brian Kelly, with an Achilles issue. Major Burns should also be back for Bama. Garrett Dellinger still had a brace on his right knee dealing with an MCL injury during pregame of Ole Miss, but Kelly has said the expectation would be he'd be back for Bama. I think we'll know on Monday.

Has Julian Sayin set an announcement date?

The five-star quarterback has not set an exact date but it still feels like a decision will be coming soon with LSU and Bama battling it out. I still think LSU leads. Joe Sloan will be at his game tonight and then here's the other thing: Nick Saban and Alabama offered 2024 QB Walker White LAST night. What's that say? I could be putting in a FutureCast today or tomorrow.

Have the players talked about the difference in the nutrition and strength and conditioning programs?

A few have. The main difference I've gathered from hearing people talk or doing my own research is the way it's planned out and not wasted energy. I've heard a player describe it as less taxing on the body but still getting the same amount of work in. For example, you don't have to kill yourself doing XYZ exercise and risking injury when you can do an ABC exercise and get the same results. I think that way of thinking and planning, plus the way Kelly has them practicing has helped limit those injuries we saw last season. Whatever the strength and conditioning program is doing is working because LSU has looked great late in games and not gassed at all.

Either of the two RB commits plan to enroll early?

I'll find out. Don't have an answer on this just yet but will get back to y'all.

How is Maason Smith progressing from his injury? Will he be able to participate in spring practice?

From everyone that I've spoken to around Maason, all is good right now. He's in good spirits and on track and doesn't seem to be any complications. As far as spring ball, I still think it's too early to know exactly. That's going to be determined with his rehab process and how that goes. Spring ball will be right around the 6-month mark of the injury so there's a possibility but would really have to see how he does further into the rehabbing process.

Has Quency Wiggins been playing, I haven’t noticed?

His first game was against Mississippi State when he played special teams. He was coming back from a Lisfranc injury that week. He has logged one assisted tackle against New Mexico. I believe the plan is to redshirt him this season.

Did Kelly change the #7 tradition to being the best player from Louisiana???

I can't recall if he actually said it would strictly be for Louisiana's best player or not. I guess we'll find out next season when Boutte is in the NFL. Perhaps we should go ahead and give it to Harold Perkins now?

OFF TOPIC Can believe none of you guys

have commented on Saban's comments about the player smacking the girl.

According to Saban the reason the Alabama player hit the girl was because he ,the player, feared for his health. LOL. So when a random chick comes by then starts heading in the other direction he hits her on the head because he was scared. Saban stated they will handle this internally. One can't make this shit up. IF someone has already posted Saban's comments I apologize for bringing it back up.

Texas 8 and.....

Looking more like it will be Texas 4 & 8 this year. Couldn't happen to a better coach. Lmao. Yall still want him as HC? Gonna be a lot of talent hitting the portal after this season. Too bad our class is shaping up and there will be no room at the Inn. Should have chose better the first time. Lol.

LSU FOOTBALL Anyone looking for free money?

I just left the sportsbook at La'Berge here in Baton Rouge. The Over/Under for LSU's win total is 6.5. The money line is -200 which sucks, but I guess they have to put some sort of restraint on all that money they're going to be giving away in December.

This means that LSU could lose to FSU and lose half of their conference games this year and you would STILL win. Honestly, I'm considering taking out a second mortgage at this point.

Weaux! Things feel different

JD lead the team in rushing. Early this season that was a problem (atleast for me). He still runs but JD's running is more of a weapon now and not the identity of the offense. Its harder to defend because he's is trusting his arm more and getting our wideouts involved. There's less footage of wide-open receivers not getting the ball. Teams can't cover our dogs and still load the box to keep JD contained. It opens up so many other facets of our game. Passing, Running, Blocking, Defense stays off the field. Pick your poison. Admittedly, I wasn't holding out hope that JD would turn the corner and correct his early season tendencies, but I have a little crow on the grill this morning and I'm prepared to eat it. If this continues....Weaux!!!

Something I just noticed I haven’t seen mentioned..

We didn’t let ole miss get back into the game like we did Florida. We were up 21 on both teams late into the second half. Vs Florida we found a way to let them get back within one score. Last week we completely shut the door and scored to go up by a 4th touchdown.
I don’t know if it’s luck or learned but we definitely did something different vs ole miss. Attitude, game plan, or whatever.

-- Brian Polian will head out to recruit Wednesday and the remainder of the staff will be at high school games on Thursday and Friday. The focus will be on 2023 commits and top 2024 targets.

-- Brian Kelly on facing Alabama QB Bryce Young: "This will be the most difficult. ... An enormous challenge for our defense to contain him."

-- Kelly on the #LSU fans rushing the field after Ole Miss: "I was really surprised. I didn't expect it."

Birthdays & BAMA

I’m not sure when the schedule changed to play Bama in the first week of November but that decision has changed my birthday aspects forever. The trails of being born on the 5th of November and a Scorpio!
Developing unrealistic birthday expectations of “WINS” only to have it shoved down you throat with a smile and called a corndog!
I really like this team, BK has done an awesome job with buy in and establishing expectations. And is delivering results…
I think we’ve got a chance with this team. While some may not appreciate JD, da dude’s got skills we’ve never witnessed before in purple & gold. And another year…
If he gets beat out it’s because the other dude is better and I’m down with that.

LSU fined $250K for fans on the field

The Southeastern Conference announced today that Louisiana State University will be fined for a violation of the league’s access to competition area policy due to fans entering the field following its football game against the University of Mississippi on October 22.

LSU will incur a fine of $250,000 for a third offense under the league’s access to competition area policy. LSU was last fined for a violation following its football game against Georgia in 2018.

Fines levied against schools for violation of the access to competition area policy are deposited into the SEC Post-Graduate Scholarship Fund.

The policy states that “access to competition areas shall be limited to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, support personnel and properly-credentialed individuals at all times. For the safety of participants and spectators alike, at no time before, during or after a contest shall spectators be permitted to enter the competition area. It is the responsibility of each member institution to implement procedures to ensure compliance with this policy.”

Financial penalties are imposed for violations in all sports sponsored by the Conference. Institutional penalties range from $50,000 for a first offense to fines of up to $100,000 for a second offense and up to $250,000 for a third and subsequent offenses. The policy was originally adopted by a vote of Conference members in 2004 and financial penalties were increased by action taken by the membership during the 2015 SEC Spring Meetings.

Joe Sloan to check out Julian Sayin's Thursday game

This is mostly a recap of Sayin's visit to Alabama over the weekend but wanted to share a few things.

-- LSU QB coach Joe Sloan will travel to watch Sayin's game Thursday night
-- No date is set but it's likely sooner than later
-- This is down to LSU and Bama
