LSU FOOTBALL 08/07 Joe Sloan Media Availability

  • Love the continuity among the offensive staff. Guys like himself, Cortez Hankton, Frank Wilson and Brad Davis have all been working together for a while, and he feels it helps carry over to the players.
  • Says they have an unbelievable group of tight ends, even without Markway. Thinks Pimpton has grown a lot and Green is making great strides right away. Thinks it's one of the most exciting groups on the team.
  • Garrett Nussmeier processes info super quickly and has a massive arm to make any throw. Says he always had the talent, but where he's really improved is in his process. He's learning to be the guy and how he can improve day-to-day.
  • Says with their depth, they are able to run pretty much every set they want. They can run so many different formations with their receivers, tight ends and running backs. Thinks they can do more things this year than last year.
  • Everyone saw what Kaleb Jackson could do last season. He was incredibly hard to tackle and can run over people, but they needed to see him grow mentally. Understanding where he's supposed to go, how to read defenses and how to be better in pass protection, and they think he's done a great job of that.
  • Thinks their offensive line is special. They have some elite talent who have played together for a long time. Thinks one of the most exciting things about them is that they can coach up the young offensive linemen who are going to take over next season.
  • With helmet communication, he thinks it's great, but they need to have a backup plan for calling plays without it. Says the positive thing about having Nuss at QB is that he's used to getting plays without the helmet comm, but it can still throw you off in the moment.
  • Thinks having IPads on the sideline is awesome. They don't have to go and ask their players if they think they saw something, they can just sit down and look at the replays and figure out adjustments quicker.
  • They had a massive offensive playbook last year, so they didn't really have to start from scratch in redesigning the offense this year. They've tinkered with some stuff, but they've had the ability to do most things they're going to do this year.

LSU FOOTBALL News and Notes: LSU fall camp day five

  • Practice started with a couple minutes of 11-on-11 work. First play, Nuss found Mason Taylor over the middle for a 15-20 yard gain. Next play, Nuss threw a beautiful ball to Zavion Thomas who was streaking down the right sideline, but he dropped it. Easily would've been a touchdown. Rickie Collins came in next and ran a couple run plays before the period ended.

LSU FOOTBALL 08/06 Brian Kelly Media Availability Notes (Presser Video Added)

  • Did a lot of second down work today, but tomorrow they will transition to full pads and start working on all downs and red zone. It's been a progression, but they're really about to ramp it up.
  • Team is pretty injury free at the moment. Had some small things, but they've all been participating and recovering well. Zavion Thomas has a slight hamstring issue, but it's not major. They're being careful with him.
  • Says virtually seven coaches will have a hand in special teams this year. There are areas they need to improve on such as the return game and in kickoff coverage. Says that needs to be really big for them.
  • Says Kyren Lacy, Chris Hilton and CJ Daniels are going to be integral parts of the offense, and the rest of them will contribute in smaller ways. They've rotated guys like Aaron Anderson and some of the other backups into the first-team because they want Nussmeier to be comfortable with them.
  • Says Jay'Viar Suggs has true pass rushing ability, which you don't always see in defensive tackles.
  • Mac Markway has decided that he is not going to play for the team anymore. He informed them last night.
  • Says Blake Baker's system has allowed their players to play fast and free. They don't have to think about everything they do.
  • Thinks the young DBs have put together some good periods, but hasn't quite been as consistent as he'd like. Says it's not at a championship level. He wants them to string good practices together, not just good periods. However, he sees them getting closer and closer.
  • Thinks Will Campbell has really improved as a leader since arriving on campus in 2022. He was not and is not a big talker, but when he speaks, the team listens. He's one of the most respected players on the team. Says they're going to ask him to do some things this year that he's never done before, but thinks it'll only heighten who he is as a player.
  • Bradyn Swinson and Jalen Lee are still finishing their spanish classes for the summer session which ends Monday. They've been working out in the afternoons after practice to get used to the heat and weather.

LSU FOOTBALL News & Notes: Fall camp practice No. 4

LSU held practice No. 4 of fall camp today and Summer has fully arrived. It was 89 degrees with a heat index of 100 degrees at 9:55 AM right as the team was starting to come outside and they opened up the gates to media. By the time practice was over we saw an increase of at least seven degrees on the heat index as it was approaching 107-108 degrees toward the end of practice, so it was a hot one today for sure and the sun pulled no punches today claiming a victim toward the end of practice as Tyree Adams had to get rid of his breakfast near the end of practice and was getting some relief with a bit of an ice water bath from one of the trainers. But I'll tell you and I'll have more on this later in the notes, but one thing these coaches are instilling on this team is toughness and I don't know why but it seemed more evident today than it did last season. Granted it's early but there was no coddling going on that's for sure.

With that said let's get to the meat and potatoes of my news & notes. I will preface this by saying

RECRUITING Louisiana standout backs off Michigan pledge

Destrehan (LA) four-star WR Phillip Wright III has decommitted from Michigan. LSU was considered a viable threat to flip Wright's commitment and we're hearing his recruitment may not be open too long with a new decision possible by the end of the week.

LSU FOOTBALL News and Notes: Fall camp day two

Only had 15 minutes of access today, but here's what I got for y'all:
Second Team Offensive Line:
LT: Tyree Adams RS-FR
LG: Paul Mubenga RS-FR
C: Coen Echols FR
RG: Bo Bordelon SO
RT: Weston Davis FR
  • West Weeks and Princeton Malbrue seem to have a firm grasp on the backup LB roles.
  • Aaron Anderson was taking first-team punt return reps, followed by Zavion Thomas, Kyle Parker then Jelani Watkins.
  • Payton Todd was first-team punter, but I don't think that'll last long. From the five minute punting session we saw, Blake Ochsendorf looked like the better punter. More hang time and distance.
  • Punt blocking looked not great. Scout team was putting a lot of pressure on the punter, but there also wasn't a ton of contact so take that how you will.
  • Rickie Collins took QB2 reps today ahead of AJ Swann, who took QB2 reps yesterday. We'll likely see them go back and forth all fall.
  • Mac Markway is pretty clearly TE2 at the moment. Took some reps on the first-team when they were in 12 personnel and was in most second-team reps with Pimpton as well.
  • No changes to first-team WR. Lacy, Daniels and Hilton took the majority of reps with Zavion Thomas getting some as well.
