Have never been a fan; nothing wrong with the concept, but I get infuriated by the voters nonsense of just voting from a spreadsheet, and awarding it to a good player on a great team, not a great player on a good team. IMO it is awarded annually but seldom earned. It usually (not always) goes to a guy who's performance is elevated by the team he is on, not one who elevates the team himself. So that has been my gas, and I haven't watched it in years. I thought Tyrann Mathieu was clearly the guy that year who fit the definition above, but he finished 5th.
NOT SO THIS YEAR however! For once they got it right, and Burrow forced it frankly. No real choice. He is the first true earner of the award for quite awhile. Not a QB for OU that plays in a limp conference with padded stats, not a RB from Bama that piles up yards by being on the best team. No, for it is clear who deserves this award, and it will be matched later when the NFL draft comes around. I WILL be watching Saturday the 14th, at 7PM, already cleared the calendar.
