11/09 Kim Mulkey Postgame Press Conference Notes

- Says how impressed she was with Queens team that they sat on the bench and watched the whole ceremony. Those in charge at LSU did an amazing job with the whole ceremony and all of it was done first class. Says she is so glad she doesn't wear the rings because of how big they are. She knows everything done last year is on that piece of medal.

- Says she doesn't care they scored in the 100's tonight, she cares about defense. She is challenging them to talk on defensie, high five, slap. She wants them to know where they are on defense. Says she saw more energy from all of her returners tonight. But says we're not a polished product but they will get there.

- She has been blessed to coach every position, they can all score but she is focused on defense right now. Says Angel will find an open player and her guards also have to see through the lane. Things on the offensive side are not as important right now as what they need to work on in defense.

- Angel Reese would take over the huddle and that's what she wants to see. She wants to see that from Angel. Watching the upperclassman challenge the underclassmen is what she loves to see. The freshman played with a spark and she knows that the players she put in the last couple of minutes did not think is was trashy last minutes. They played and wanted coach to see they can play. Says she is pleased from them.

- Says that the emotion for a ring ceremony does not come close to when the clock hits zero or the cutting of the net. She is focused on recruiting and other big things after a ring ceremony tonight. Excited that Alexis Morris was here and Emily Ward was here. The net being cut down was special to her.

- She watched the introductory clip and says when she was introduced here for the first time, she made everyone look at the final four and told them she came here to put a national championship banner up. Now they have built a relevant program. Says how hard it is to win a national championship and says how she has won four at two different institutions. Son says she will beat herself up, after the plane ride back from Las Vegas, her son told her it will never stop until you retire. She has been blessed. Says our institution and state needed that national championship win. As a coach you want to do something impactful.

- Says at the time she was not making a "promise" but she came home to win a national championship and this is what she wants to do. Had a lot of kids who did not know if they wanted to have a smile of have a sour look before tonight's game after the ceremony. Told us Bob Starkey needed to take over yesterday in practice so she can take a breath. Also says Bob Starkey needs to be in the women's basketball hall of fame. She says her team wants to please everyone and they are still not comfortable. She wants them to remeber how bad they played on monday. She believes teams are a reflection of there head coach and she is not that head coach.

LSU BASKETBALL 11/10 MBB Post Game Press Conference Notes

Jalen Reed and Mike Williams III
  • Felt like they came out with too little energy. Says if they can come out and play like the did in the second half early in the game, they'll be just fine.
  • Says the three's weren't falling, so in the second half they attacked Nicholls' zone in the paint.
  • Says they have a next game mindset and feels they'll come out in the Charleston Classic and play better.
Coach McMahon
  • Congratulated Nicholls and said they played every possession like it determined the game, which it did. Said they just wanted to win more than LSU did tonight.
  • Apologized to everyone who came to the game. Said it's his responsibility to make sure his team comes prepared every game and said he failed tonight.
  • He was very emotional during the press conference. He slammed his fist on the table when talking about how bad they performed.
  • Says he's not real worried about Charleston and just wants to get back to practice to fix the mistakes from tonight.
  • He's still confident in his team. Says it's a long season and they still have goals to work towards.
  • Wants Mike Williams III to be more agressive shooting the ball. He had some open shots. Said he showed a lot of good things on defense.
  • Thinks Jalen Reed did a lot of great things for them on both sides of the court.
  • Said communication was off when they were switching on defense.
  • They weren't ever able to get Will Baker going and said Nicholls did a good job covering him.

LIVE GAME THREAD LSU vs Nicholls State Live Game Thread *7pm CT*

The Tigers Men's Basketball team will tip off their second game of the season against Nicholls State on Thursday night at 7pm CT. LSU is coming off a 106-60 victory over Mississippi Valley State and are looking to start the season 2-0 before heading to Charleston for the Charleston Classic next Thursday.

Nicholls State is coming off a 91-81 loss to Tulane on Monday. In that game, Jamal West Jr. was their leading scorer, dropping 24 points on 9-12 shooting. Mekhi Collins dropped a double-double in the season opener, recording 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Things to know for the upcoming game:

  • The Colonels hauled in 15 offensive rebounds in their season opener. The Tigers struggled in their exhibition and season opener to stop the opposing team from grabbing offensive boards, and McMahon said that's something the team worked on this week.
  • Will Baker is coming off a 29 point game and he'll have a tall task ahead of him going against Mekhi Collins. We'll see if the 7'0 center can continue to dominate tonight.
  • LSU is a 20.5 point favorite entering this game. The spread seems a little large, but if the Tigers can win by 20+, I think it'll be a good sign for them moving forward.
  • Nicholls shot just 45% from the free throw line in their opener. If that continues, the Tigers should have a huge advantage after shooting 71% from the charity stripe Monday night.
  • LSU's opening night shooting % of 57.6% ranks 18th in the nation. It's hard to shoot that well consistently, but this is a team that shot nearly 75% in their exhibition. We'll see if the offense can keep rolling.
Check back at 7pm for live updates from the game. The game will be streamed on SECN+ as well.

LSU FOOTBALL 11/09 Brian Kelly Media Availabilty

  • Jayden Daniels practiced today and will "most likely pass the concussion protocol." he is probable.
  • Says he's been able to prepare enough for this week while in the protocol. Says Nussmeier is a really good quarterback and they would start him if they felt Daniels wasn't able to prepare properly.
  • Thinks Graham Mertz is a very good QB. Points out his high completion percentage and says he actually tried to recruit him to Notre Dame.
  • Says the key to getting Florida off the field is forcing them into third and longs. They've been really good at getting themselves into third and manageable situations, so keeping them behind the sticks is key.
  • Feels that with some of the injuries they've had on defense that Matt House has been forced to tone down the variety of defensive play calls he uses during the game. Also has to take the corner youth into account.
  • Said the SEC responded about the hit on Daniels and said it did not reach their definition of targeting. They also said the missed horse collar on Daniels didn't meet their criteria for a horse collar. Check his press conference on youtube if you want a more in depth answer, because he went pretty in depth about the process of it all.
  • Says his team has responded to loss well in practice. Even though a lot of people say there's not much to play for, he feels there is. 10 wins is a big deal and he wants this program to consistently be a winning program.
  • Says his corners are excited and locked in for their opportunity. Said they have to be careful not to put them in too complex situations. Says they have done a great job stepping in and competing, but they need to not put them in compromising situations.
  • Logan Diggs is questionable for Saturday's game. He wore a red jersey (non-contact) in practice today with an "upper body" injury.
  • Thinks northern Louisiana is a key spot for them to recruit from. They have a lot of great players up there and they feel like they can find some more great players up there.

Harris visited LSU in September but there's been a lot of talk about Purdue dating back to the summer months. It feels like the Boilermakers are the team to beat here, but LSU is still in the mix and McMahon and staff will continue to put in effort until the ink meets the paper.

The Tigers have signed Lafayette Christian Academy guard Jada Richard.

“Jada’s scoring ability from the perimeter and midrange is outstanding, but what’s equally impressive is her knack for creating opportunities for others,” Coach Kim Mulkey said. “She’s a selfless player with a high basketball IQ. I have no doubt she will continue to excel and elevate the play of her teammates. I’m excited that Jada is staying home to be a Tiger!”
