SEC Nick Saban previews LSU vs. Alabama in weekly teleconference

  • Said they worked on solidifying their fundamentals during their bye.
  • Highlighted Jayden Daniels and Harold Perkins as big players in this game after their performance against them last year.
  • Talked about the 2003 national championship team he coached at LSU. Said he'll always remember that team because it was his first championship and those players will always have a place in his heart. Says it definitely doesn't feel like 20 years.
  • Feels LSU does a great job of disguising their plays with formations and motions. Said LSU runs a lot of "triple option" with a RB, Daniels and then a WR/TE in the flat.
  • He wants to continue to play this game annually. Says this game brings a lot of fan interest and they want to keep as much attention on not only LSU and Bama, but the SEC as well.
  • Doesn't think his guys are focused on their CFP ranking. They are focused on executing on high level, because if they can do that, they feel they can win every game. Doesn't want to become outcome oriented.

LSU FOOTBALL 11/1 Brian Kelly Teleconference

  • Says the bye has been about upping their preparation for Alabama.
  • Says it's going to be a challenge going up against an offense that's finding their footing, and called Alabama's defense they best they've faced this year.
  • He's not worried about the College Football Playoff rankings. He says it only matters where you're ranked in December. They're just taking it one game at a time.
  • They wouldn't change the structure of their defense if they decide to use Harold Perkins as a spy. They have formations they can use where he can be a spy built within their defense. Sounds like they plan on using him as a spy, in pass rush and in coverage.
  • Jayden Daniels has full autonomy in 5 and 6 man protections. He can also check out of overload blitzes. He also has the ability to check out of runs if they're not there.
  • Jordan Jefferson graded out as LSU's best defensive lineman against Army. Kelly called him one of the strongest players on the team. Jefferson has a 500 Ibs bench and 600 Ibs squat. When they recruited him in the portal, they liked his experience and his ability to get leverage and get off blocks, and being super strong on top of that helped.
  • Feels they've ran the ball really well. It provides a balance for their passing game. Says LSU is 13th in rushing and 3rd in passing offense this season. Said he'd take 200 rushing yards per game any day.
  • They know Alabama is going to be a tough defense, so they need to figure out how to score points, but the biggest difference is their explosiveness on offense.
  • Says he wants to play Alabama every year with the new scheduling. Thinks they'll have a say in that and SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey has allowed them to have some input in that. Thinks they will continue to play Alabama annually.

LSU BASKETBALL 10/30 LSU MBB Exhibition Live Thread *7pm CT*

Tonight at 7pm CT, LSU Men's Basketball will take the floor for the first time this season to take on Louisiana Christian in an exhibition game. Posting this now so y'all know to tune it tonight for live updates from the game.

Some fun facts before tonights game:
  • Louisiana Christian is a NAIA school and currently has 28 players on their roster. For comparison, LSU currently holds the maximum number of players a D1 school can have on their roster, 15.
  • LSU has six transfers and two freshman on their roster. Over half (8) of their roster are new to the team and will play their first game in an LSU jersey tonight.
  • 10 of the players on LSU's roster have at least three years of college basketball experience. This is an older team that has played a lot of games, which is something Matt McMahon emphasized when building this years roster through the portal.
  • Corey Chest, the No. 1 recruit in the state of Louisiana, will suit up for his first collegiate game. He averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds in the 2022 season.
  • Former Tulane guard and New Orleans native, Jalen Cook, is still awaiting a waiver from the NCAA to play this season. As far as I'm concerned, he's not playing tonight, but we'll update you if we learn otherwise.
Looking forward to tonight. We should see most, if not all the Tigers hit the court tonight, so make sure to check this thread during the game for updates.

LSU FOOTBALL 10/30 Brian Kelly Media Availability

  • Mekhi Wingo is likely out for the season. He had surgery and is expected to miss six weeks, so depending on how the post season goes, he's likely done.
  • Emery Jones is a full participant in practice.
  • Talks about the improvement of Alabama's offense and more specifically, Jalen Milroe.
  • Highlights Isaiah Bond, Jermaine Burton and Jase McClellan as weapons on Alabama's offense.
  • Talked about how good Bama's defense has been the last few weeks. Haven't given up 21 points in a game in a while.
  • They worked on some technical stuff during the bye. Said they gave the players rest, but they still went to work. Did about 70% of their normal workload.
  • Says there's a connection between him and Tommy Reese. Thinks he's done a great job at Alabama in such a short time. Says his offense likes to run the ball and take shots down the field.
  • Feels his players are in a good mindset this week. They understand what they need to do in practice and preparation to win.
  • Deuce, Denver and Zy are all unavailable. Ashton Stamps starts practice today. Reiterates that Zy Alexander could be out for a significant amount of time.
  • Felt that last year, his guys were executing at a high level, so he went for two. Says it's hard to say if he'd do it again this year if the time came, it's just more of gut feeling.
  • Thinks his young corners can go out and get the job done. Even though they don't have a bunch of games under their belt, he's confident they've had good reps in practices and feels they're talented enough to go out and play at a high level.
  • Thinks that at first, there was a feeling Milroe was going to just run all over the place. Says he is a threat to run, but he is a pass first QB. He likes to take the deep shot, and feels Milroe really throws the football well. When he has the opportunity to hit a deep shot, he hits it more often than not.
  • The offense recognizes their ability to be explosive, so they have a confidence level that they think they can perform against anyone, so nothing about playing Alabama worries them.
  • Said after the Army game that he's having more fun here than anywhere he's been. He loves watching the growth of this team, he says they do everything they ask them to do. They've had tough losses, but never back down.
  • Says he used to watch LSU-Alabama games after he would get home from Notre Dame games.
  • Says Jayden Daniels will have a lot of other games to build his Heisman resume. Doesn't think this game should be weighted more than others, but acknowledges that the voters weigh big games more than others.
  • He talked about Alabama's defense and how physical they are. They're very stout up front and says they're the "best defense in all three phases."
  • Says they'd clearly love to have Wingo in the lineup, but they're built for injuries. They have good players that are ready to step up and play at a high level. Says if you lose one guy and you're not ready to answer the bell, then you're not very good.
  • Feeding off that...Jordan Jefferson has been playing very well. Kelly said he's probably their highest graded player. Also feels Paris Shand and Bradyn Swinson have been very good in rotation, so he's comfortable with Wingo's backups.
  • Says the back up corners are "elite players." They have to be confident and trust their technique. Says they've got no choice, so they have to be ready to play, and he feels that they are.

Gumbo weather

It’s getting cold here in Dallas so I made my favorite gumbo today. Nice thing is you don’t need to make a roux.

Seafood okra gumbo.

1 lb smoked sausage cut in 1/4” slices
2 lbs shrimp. I prefer 31-40s
1 lb blue crab lump meat
4 blue crabs cleaned and halved. I use uncooked ones.
6 cups okra sliced 1/2”
2 medium onions chopped
1 large bell pepper chopped
5 stalks of celery chopped
4 cloves of garlic chopped fine
1 cup of green onions sliced
1/4” cup parsley chopped fine
4 tbspn duck fat
1 tbspn white vinegar
64 oz of bone broth
3 bay leaves
4 tbspn Worcestershire sauce
2 tbspn dried oregano
2 tbspn Louisiana hot sauce
2 tbspn Cajun seasoning
Salt and pepper.
1 quart of water

Heat 6 to 8 quart pot(I always use cast iron) on medium heat and add 1 tbspn duck fat. Add sausage and brown 10 mins. Remove sausage from pot and set aside.

Add remainder of duck fat. After a minute or so add onions, bell pepper and celery. Cook for 15-20 mins or until soft on medium heat. Add okra and garlic and cook another 10 mins. Add 32 oz of bone broth, vinegar, bay leaves, sausage, oregano, Worcestershire, Cajun seasoning and hot sauce.

Bring to a boil, lower heat to simmer, cover and cook for 30 mins. Add another 32 oz of bone broth and green onions and cook for another 30 mins.

Add the crabs, cover and cook 15 mins, then add crab meat, parsley and water. Cook 20 mins.

Taste and season to your liking. Add more water as needed.

Add shrimp and bring to a boil. Turn heat to low and cook 5 minutes. Turn heat off, cover and let set 15 minutes. Taste and season again if needed. Enjoy over rice.

Always turn your fire up to medium when you add cold or room temperature ingredients then lower heat to low or simmer when it comes to a boil.

Sides
Candied sweet potatoes with pecans and bourbon maple syrup.

Green beans with potatoes and Tasso.

Oh and don’t forget that motherf***ing corn bread.

Ca c’est bon!
