RECRUITING Visiting University Lab Today for a Scrimmage vs St. Charles

Just a heads up, reminder that LSU had no practice availability today. Next availability won't be until Saturday.

With that said, I'll be on campus at University Lab today in Baton Rouge. They've got a scrimmage today against St. Charles. They've got a few players I'll be checking out and plan to catch up with afterwards. I'll be there mostly to check out the uncommitted 2025 guys, but they have a few 2024 guys that are committed elsewhere. Should have some stuff up later this evening/early tomorrow from the visit.

LSU FOOTBALL News & Notes: Fall camp practice No.11

We got a little bit of relief from the heat today. I think it was like 87 degrees when we made it to the practice field. Our media availability today was kind of limited. We weren't allowed out onto the field until after around 10:45. I think maybe we might have seen 35 minutes of practice if we were lucky by the time, it was all said and done. But I won't complain because I've been pretty surprised with the level of access that LSU head coach Brian Kelly has given to the media during fall camp. I wasn't covering the team during fall camp of last year so I'm not sure if this is the norm or not, but I sure hope so. Because it's so much better than what I've been used to covering other teams/coaches.

This is probably the most access I've had since my years covering David Bailiff at Rice. Talk about some great access, but that's a different story.

Some things to note.

As mentioned in a separate thread, LSU head coach Brian Kelly said Denver Harris was working on some "personal matters" and that if he gets things taken care of, he could be back with the team as early as this weekend.

Maason Smith was a little nicked up again today, I missed the OL vs DL drills today because I was watching the offense go 7-on-7 with the defense. So not sure how much he was out there but he was seen walking gingerly after one of his reps. Head coach Brian Kelly addressed it in his media availability but didn't seem too worried about it. "He's been banged up a little bit, but nothing we're overly concerned with, nothing structural or anything like that," Kelly said during his media availability following Wednesday's practice.

Cornerbacks again today were Duce Chestnutt and Zy Alexander working with the first team. Latterance Welch and Ashton Stamps with the second team.

There were a lot of three safety looks from the defense similar to yesterday's two-minute drill. Sage Ryan, Major Burns and Andre Sam are the three on the field together.

Sage Ryan has been getting reps playing both nickel and CB.

Here are the News and Notes from a limited practice availability today.

News & Notes

  • When we walked outside the defensive line was off to the side working out individually while the team was working on punt drills. Looked like they had the returners working with scout team vs the punting unit.
  • Aaron Anderson fielded the first punt as we walked up, he took the majority of the reps at punt return. Kyle Parker also had a decent number or reps, the only other guy I saw fielding punts outside of those two was Gregory Clayton JR. I think at this point it's Aaron Anderson's job to lose and Kelly pretty much talked as if he was going to be their man at punt return. "Aaron Anderson is about as comfortable of a punt returner as I've seen," Kelly said. "We've got some work to do on kickoff return but he's going to be back there too, we'll see where that goes."
  • I did see Kyle Parker drop a punt that rolled straight toward the coverage team. Would have been a muff and turnover in live game most likely.
  • Punt team moved the ball up to the 50, trying to pin the ball deep. First punt was a fair catch by Gregory Clayton JR.
  • Second punt was a touchback.
  • Switching drills, QB's and pass catchers running routes against air. Coaches calling out plays before each drill.
  • Jayden Daniels completed a pass to Kaleb Jackson out of the backfield.
  • Nussmeier completed a pass to Trey Holly out of the backfield.
  • Rickie Collins completes one to John Emery JR out of the back field.
  • Jayden Daniels hit Malik Nabers on a five yard inside crossing route.
  • Nussmeier hit Chris Hilton JR on an out route going toward the left sideline for about five yards.
  • Rickie Collins his Khai Prean on a five yard out route towards the right sideline.
  • Mac Markway short three yard out route to the right sideline from Jayden Daniels, pass was a little high, but he reached up and got it.
  • Nussmeier completed a corner route to K. Pimpton toward the right sideline that would have been good for 20-plus yards.
  • There's been a lot of motion/shifting in the drill and one of the coaches took exception to the lack of urgency during the shift. Getting on to everyone including the quarterback saying anytime there's a shift or motion there needs to be urgency.
  • Went to the five and five drill again with five QB's throwing at the same time to five different pass catchers. Looked like they were down an arm today, one of the coaches was throwing the fifth ball. Looks like walk on QB Matt O'Dowd wasn't out there.
  • Quarterbacks were all on target from what I could see, I don't believe there were any dropped passes or incompletions.
  • Drill change, offense doing a little seven-on-seven.
  • Jayden Daniels hit Brian Thomas JR on a short crossing route across the middle.
  • Aaron Anderson caught a short out route on the left sideline, Major Burns closed in fast, but Anderson carved him up, made a move to the right to get up the field.
  • Nussmeier crossing route across the middle to Brian Thomas JR, he did make the catch, but he bobbled it a little bit. Probably would have been lit up in live action.
  • Nussmeier nice crossing route to Malik Nabers, about a 20-yard gain. Ashton Stamps was in coverage. Very nice throw by Nussmeier, really had some zest on it.
  • Nussmeier nice tight throw to Trey Holly on the right sideline out of the backfield.
  • Mac Markway caught a comeback from Nussmeier good for about five yards.
  • Chris Hilton JR reeled in a short out route, looks like he would have evaded the first defender and made a move up field to get more yardage but they're not doing full contact, so they stopped it short.
  • Jayden Daniels threw a nice jump ball to Malik Nabers in the corner of the endzone, went up and got it. I believe Duce Chestnutt was in coverage.
  • Daniels threw John Emery JR a dart on a check down, Emery stuck it and turned up field.
  • Jayden Daniels fires a 10-yard slant complete to Aaron Anderson over the middle for a touchdown.
  • Daniels threaded one to the back of the endzone to Kyren Lacey for another touchdown.
  • Good coverage by the defense, Daniels had to scramble working through his progressions (no rush on the play) hit mason Taylor on a comeback towards the right sideline, would have been good for a couple of yards at most. Not sure he would have had the time to find him with a rush.
  • Daniels completed a hitch route to the right sideline to Malik Nabers.
  • Rickie Collins was a little off target on a crossing route to Mac Markway pass was thrown behind the intended receiver, incomplete.
  • Rickie Collins nice corner route to Shelton Sampson JR to the back left pylon of the endzone, refs on the sideline signaled touchdown.
  • Drill change. Offense went to the far field, ran a couple of plays against the scout team defense.
  • Daniels hit Tre Bradford out of the backfield.
  • Next play was a hand off to I believe Trey Holly who took it up the middle. Was hard to see from the vantage point we had.
  • Offense did some 11-on-11 for the last couple minutes of practice, though they were still on the far field a pretty good distance from the media viewing area and there was a wall of players blocking our view, so it was challenging to see what was happening and we weren't allowed to walk over near that field.
  • Jayden Daniels hit Aaron Anderson for a touchdown, extra point from Damian Ramos was good.
  • Nussmeier hit Chris Hilton JR for a hitch route on the right sideline, then turned it up field and scored. Ramos' PAT good.
After that last play they continued to work in 11-on-11, but we were ushered back inside.

LSU FOOTBALL News & Notes: Fall camp practice No.10

Today was session No.10 for LSU's preseason practice. They let us through the gates at about 10:15 AM, got to watch a little over an hour, maybe an hour 15 to and hour and a half tops before they ushered us back inside. Got to see a lot of special teams work again, various offensive drills, some against air, I think we got maybe five to 10 minutes of actual 11-of-11 today when they were working on tempo and two-minute drill.

The first few things I want to note, I did make a separate post but just to make sure no one misses it. I know a couple of you have asked about the AC helmets, I did ask today about that and was told they were not wearing them and "I don't know if we will," I tried to get clarification or a little elaboration on that but couldn't get much more. so, it's unclear if/when they will wear them.

Maason Smith was dressed out but spent the majority of the time off to the side working out with a coach. He spent a lot of time taking individual reps on a blocking sled, I don't believe that he ever joined the team for actual defensive drills, but I could be mistaken. I didn't see him out there if he did though.

A guy we might not be talking about enough is Bradyn Swinson. I've now seen him make multiple plays off the edge in multiple practices now. He won reps against both starting tackles today including a sack against Will Campbell in 11-on-11. Definitely keep an eye out for him. If he keeps playing like this, he may find his way onto the field more often.

There was another minor dustup at practice today. Didn't turn into a full fledge team thing like the last one but during a session where the offensive line was lining up against the D-line they were rotating individual drills, similar to what they were doing the other day. They'd have the entire lines lined up against each other, but it was a one-on-one, position by position where most of them did two reps in a row, anyway this was well into the drill, but Redshirt freshman Tygee Hill was matched up with true freshman Paul Mebenga. The first drill, Hill bullied Mebenga into the backfield for some serious penetration on the rep, and when rep two came around he basically did the same thing, but towards the end of the play Mebenga tossed him to the ground, the play hadn't been blown dead yet, so I didn't really make much of it. Mebenga turned and was walking back to the line, away from Hill when Hill jumped up and ran behind Mebenga and swung on him hitting his helmet and knocking his helmet off, the two players then got into a shoving match, and it was quickly broken up.

Really just a dumb overall play by Tygee Hill who let his emotions get the best of him. The play was over, the offensive lineman wasn't boasting or anything just walking back to the line, and he hits him with his back turned to him. Would have been the easiest 15-yard penalty ever given in football and a likely ejection had it been a real game. Not a good decision at all.

The other thing I want to note is I know the coaching staff isn't going to tell us that the depth is settled and there are still a few more practices left in camp, but it really looks like Duce Chestnutt and Zy Alexander are going to be your 1 & 2 at CB, with Ashton Stamps and Latterance Welch as the 3 & 4. Again, far from over but every indication this week that I've seen points to that being the case. So we'll continue to monitor the situation as practice moves forward but don't be surprised if that's the two-deep at CB when it's all said and done.

RECRUITING Coach's Corner: Sulphur (LA) Head Coach Jeremiah Gueringer sings praises of newest LSU commit

Had a great conversation last night with Sulphur (LA) Head Coach Jeremiah Gueringer who took over the head position as Sulpher back in January after making the move over from Welsh High School. He coaches newest LSU commit JD LaFleur and I'm not sure if I've ever talked to a head coach that had so many positive things to say about one of their players. Don't get me wrong, I'm used to hearing a lot of "coach speak" as they call it. But I could tell that Gueringer has already built a great relationship with LaFleur and is both proud and impressed by his development in the few short months he's been around him.

RECRUITING Chatter around Dakorien Moore **Updated** Committed to LSU (Story Added)

Don't get too excited, but there's a little bit of buzz around Dakorien Moore today and I'm hearing he may make a commitment soon, potentially as early as tomorrow. It's mostly just chatter, and I'm not sure exactly what to make of it just yet but we'll definitely be keeping an eye on him moving forward. If he does announce soon, I'd be surprised if LSU wasn't the pick. Especially if it did come tomorrow.

Again, hearing he could make an announcement as soon as tomorrow, but nothing set in stone. Just passing along some whispers in the wind I'm hearing. So take it for what you will.

LSU FOOTBALL Heads Up on Practice No.9 Today

LSU is hosting practice No.9 of fall camp today. Media availability isn't until 10:45 and they're allowing a small viewing only window.

We'll have Trevor on hand with his camera, though he's not allowed to shoot anything he'll be there for the post practice availability. I've got a dentist appointment today at 11:45 I think I may have had a tooth issue sneak up on me, the entire right side of my face is swollen and painful and had a slight fever last night. So I'm going to have it checked out.

Anna is still driving back from ESPN today and her first day with us will officially be Thursday. So, I don't think we'll have anyone to get notes for today.

But I'm going to will myself out there on Tuesday and Wednesday. So, fear not. We'll have a ton of stuff for you this week.

Got some things coming shortly as well.

Hope everyone is having a great Monday.
