LSU FOOTBALL LSU drops regular season finale: My Take

It was ugly tonight against Texas A&M. There’s no sugarcoating it. LSU was outplayed, outcoached and didn’t look like the same team we’ve been watching the last few weeks.

That being said: this group has achieved more than anyone anticipated in Year 1 of Brian Kelly and have looked like a totally different team the back half of the season compared to the Florida State loss. There’s been tremendous accountability, leadership and growth within the team.

BUT, the Tigers should have won this game. There was no one making plays or providing a spark throughout much of the game. Jayden Daniels missed WRs again and was unable to get into the end zone with his legs or by passing, John Emery carried the rock for 3 scores. Daniels also had the fumble turnover which took the momentum out of the Tigers. We also did not see Matt House’s signature second-half adjustments we’ve become accustomed to all season. A lot of things had to go wrong for LSU while everything had to go right for A&M and that’s exactly what happened.

I’m excited to see what BK and this staff and team can do over the next few years. Next up, Georgia.

Postgame with Brian Kelly

-- Kelly: "We weren't our best today."

-- Jayden Daniels has an ankle injury

-- Kelly: “We needed more juice, more fire, and we lacked that today. That’s on me.”

-- Jarrick Bernard-Converse was out due to concussion

-- BK said after the Daniels fumble, LSU never recovered the momentum back.

-- Kelly added that this season has been one of the most enjoyable of his career and that he's proud of all the team accomplished in Year 1. The loss to A&M was a bump in the road, not a step back, he said.

LSU FOOTBALL Monday notes from Brian Kelly's press conference

-- Brian Kelly says Jarrick Bernard-Converse will practice non-contact Tuesday. They’re expecting “he’ll be back for us.”

-- Kelly says Jayden Daniels will get his ankle examined again tomorrow. “He’s got to be able to get up on his toes.”

-- Kelly on the SEC Championship: "Our guys have had the opportunity to play the best and this is another opportunity for us to be challenged."

-- Kelly on what it would mean to win the SEC title… “It would obviously be something we would all feel great about in our first year here at LSU. … it would be such a huge thing for this football program.”

-- Kelly isn’t worried about a potential letdown: “Our guys know they let something slip away and they’re upset about it.”

-- Kelly was asked about deciding what to change and what not to change at LSU when he arrived a year ago: "You don't really touch tradition, but you don't worship it."

-- Kelly was asked about his biggest takeaway from his first season in the SEC: "This past weekend. You have to bring your best each and every week. If you don't, you'll get beat. That, to me, is the takeaway. You cannot play without the energy and the identity of your football team.”

RECRUITING A few extra tidbits on Jaylen Bell

-- Bell's Pop Warner team was featured in a documentary. He declared on camera back then that in 5 years he'll be at #LSU as a starting cornerback. "Mark my words. Mark this date right now." \

Here's the doc on his team: Login to view embedded media
-- Brian Kelly recruited Bell's older brother, Tre, to Notre Dame in 2012. So, needless to say, the family has known Kelly for about a decade now, which only helps a situation.

-- LSU's Cortez Hankton and Bobby Barham have had their eyes on Bell since they were on UGA's staff when then an 8th grader, Bell, was putting on a show at a few 7on7 tournaments on campus. UGA offered Bell after those events.

-- He grew up a fan of LSU because its DBU. He watched Derek Stingley, Tyrann Mathieu, Morris Claiborne, Tre’Davious White, Patrick Peterson to name a few. He thinks he has the chops to be in that kind of category.

-- My take on Bell: He's got a lot of growing to do as far as adding weight and obviously that'll come over time as his body matures but he's long as hell and we know how much that helps when playing CB. He's been coached all his life by his dad, Marion, and his brother. They're a football family and it always helps to have a solid football bloodline.

Notes from SEC Championship Teleconference on Sunday

BRIAN KELLY

-- Kelly on Maason Smith: “He’s doing well. He’s focused on his academics and rehabilitation. He’s had no setbacks.” Added that the expectation is Smith will be ready to be involved in spring ball.

-- Kelly on Harold Perkins… “He’s very, very talented. … He is an elite and special player.”

-- Kelly on John Emery bouncing back… “He needed it for himself. Obviously he took it hard the week before not taking care of the football. … it was a really nice way to respond to some adversity.”

-- Kelly says he feels good about Josh Williams being part of the game plan for the SEC Championship.

-- Kelly says they kept Jayden Daniels in a boot today due to his ankle injury and he’s optimistic Daniels will practice Tuesday. It was not a high ankle sprain.

-- Kelly on the loss to A&M: "We've played with traits over talent all year and for some reason those traits weren't in place on Saturday. Our players know it, they took it hard after the game. We don't wanna be beat when not bringing our very best."

KIRBY SMART

-- Smart on LSU LB Harold Perkins: “He’s extremely explosive, athletic and they do a very good job of utilizing his skillset.”

-- Smart on the difference of this Brian Kelly team vs. Notre Dame in 2019… “Different makeup. They have big physical SEC players. … LSU is never going to be short on players.”

-- Smart on Jayden Daniels… “Extremely athletic. Smooth. Great release. … Very impressive, composure and demeanor.”

Why the 2-point call was right and wrong

Everyone goes by “what the card says”
And the card says when down by 21 in comeback mode, go for 2. In the event the other team knocks a field goal on following possession , it’s still a 2 possession game (assuming you Convert). That being said, a field goal drive by A&M would have chewed the clock making it a moot point. Had there been 11-12 minutes left, maybe. With 6 minutes left, I say take the 1 and know I’ve got to get a stop no matter what.
