LSU FOOTBALL USC

Never too early to talk opening game

LSU-6 is the betting line
These two have so many similarities . Both were really good on offense and equally poor on defense
Both brought in new DCs .Danton Lynn came from UCLA …he transformed the Bruins from No.87 to No.11 nationally

both lose great QBs but both new QB s posted Hugh numbers in their bowl games

Facing Lincoln Riley’s offense will answer LSU fans questions regarding the new defense . Same goes for USC fans looking for big improvement on defense

Watkins and Durham Place 1st and 3rd in the Texas 6A 100 Meter State Championship

In the UIL Texas 6A 100-meter state championship, Watkins clocked a time of 10.19 seconds to take home the title. Fellow Tiger signee Caden Durham came in third with an amazing time of 10.69 seconds at 205 pounds.

Watkins also took home the 200-meter state title with a time of 20.60 seconds, anchored the winning 4x100 relay team that posted a 39.14, which was the second fastest time ever in America, falling short of the national record Atascocita holds (38.92).

OFF TOPIC Howell: Weekend Thoughts

Welcome to my weekend thoughts. Each Monday, I will share my thoughts on what's happening in and around SE Louisiana as well as give my opinions and recommendations on various, random topics that float around in my brain and as well as answer some questions that our readers send in. So hit me up on anything from sports, music, food and more...

RPI's / NCAA Tourney

LSU certainly accomplished a lot with the series win over A&M but still has more winning to do to secure a spot in the NCAA tourney. LSU's RPI of 34 currently ranks 12th of SEC teams. The NCAA took 10 SEC teams last year and I think it reasonable to assume the same number this year. 8 SEC teams (A&M, KY, AR, UGA, UT, USCe, Bama, MSU) have RPI's in the 20's and are likely in, while 2 SEC (AU, MO) teams are out. These leaves LSU in a group with 3 other teams (UF, OM, Vandy) competing for 2 spots.

The problem LSU has is that it lost at home series to both Vandy and UF, but I think winning the last 2 series would be enough. LSU basically controls OM with the match up at the Box, but more difficult will be winning the Bama road series (hoping Holman wants to beat his old team badly). Below is the remaining SEC schedule (bolded series will have impact on LSU's standing). The good (and possibly bad if they do well) news is both UF and Vandy have difficult remaining series.

May 10-12
LSU @ Bama
MSU @ AR
AU @ MO
KY @ UF
UGA @ USCe
A&M @ OM
UT @ Vandy

5/16-5/18
Bama @ AU
AR @ A&M
UF @ UGA
Vandy @ KY
OM @ LSU

MO @ MSU
USCe @ UT

Obviously conjecture and w/o Hoover, but I believe reasonable assessment of where we are. Comments?

LSU BASEBALL LSU vs Texas A&M game three presser

Jay Johnson
  • Said they played as good as they have all year for 22 innings, but ran out of bullets against the A&M offense.
  • Says Chris Cortez was throwing 100+ with downward movement which made him hard to hit. He signed him at Arizona.
  • Says they’re in the fight, and that’s all they could do right now. Every game from here on out is a playoff game.
  • Thinks his team has grown up these last three weekends.
  • Says to get where they are now from where they were is a testament to how the team had stuck with the process and competed every game.
  • Liked what he saw from Moffett today.
  • Said with Ackenhausen, they didn’t expect him to go much longer than 1.2 innings. At most he would’ve gone through 4 more batters.
Brady Neal
  • Said this weekend is a great confidence boost. Said the environment was great and some new guys said this is what they came here for.
  • Feels like the pieces are finally coming together for this team.
  • Says the bullpen helped them a lot this weekend.
  • Says he’s feeling 100% after his injury.
  • Knows he’s a really good hitter when he’s locked in and hunting his pitch.
  • Says Cortez “is going to get paid” with the way he throws the ball.

LSU BASEBALL Jay Johnson

I’m taking off the purple and gold glasses and not drinking the kool aide. Yes, we won a Nc last year. But let’s be honest, with that roster I’ll bet 50% of Div 1 head coaches would also have won a NC.

He’s supposed to be this amazing hitting guru. Well, we suck at hitting. We have zero discipline, swing at a ton on first pitches, can’t lay off breaking balls to save our ass, snd routinely K on balls 2 feet out of the zone. If we are behind after the 6th inning we have practically no chance at coming back. The only returning player that has improved offensively over last year is Jones.

The shifts against the worst hitting team in the SEC and his handling of Anderson was abysmal. His in game coaching is just awful.

The guy can recruit and works very hard but truth be told, IMO, he is a below average coach.
