LSU FOOTBALL 04/04 LSU Football Spring Practice Notes

We only got to see 20 minutes of practice today, but here are my notes:
  • AJ Swann took second team reps early in practice, but Rickie Collins finished out the 20 minutes session we saw leading the second team offense in team drills. The QB2 battle is real and it's going to come down to the wire.
  • Second team offensive line: Tyree Adams (LT), Bo Bordelon (RT), Coen Echols (C), Christian Stamps (RG), Paul Mubenga (LG).
  • The former Ohio State corners, JK Johnson and Jyaire Brown, look like they're going to get a lot of playing time alongside Ashton Stamps and Javien Toviano. It's going to be hard to keep one of those four off the field most plays. Also have to add PJ Woodland to that mix. He's been turning heads early.
  • Speaking of the corners, Corey Raymond has them working on a lot of press coverage and jamming drills. Looks like they're going to be physical off the line of scrimmage.
  • Order the LB's did drills today: Harold Perkins, Greg Penn, Whit Weeks, West Weeks, Christian Brathwaite, Tylen Singleton
  • Jaxon Howard didn't play much last year, but he looks really big and really quick so far this spring. He could push for some serious playing time. Same thing goes for Da'Shawn Womack.
  • Will Campbell and freshman Khayree Lee Jr. were working with the tight ends in blocking drills for a portion of practice. With them moving to a lot more 12 personnel, blocking is going to become a much bigger part of the game for the LSU TE's.
  • In terms of off-the-line speed, Zavion Thomas might be the fastest guy on the team. He gets off the line insanely quick and is very good out of his breaks.
  • Keylan Mosses was on-site watching practice with Blake Baker.
Hurry up drill: We got to see a full drive of the first team offense and first team defense and about three plays of the second team offense and defense going at it. Here's what we saw:
  • First team offense: Garrett Nussmeier, Chris Hilton, Kyren Lacy, Aaron Anderson, Kaleb Jackson (!), Mason Taylor, Will Campbell, Garrett Dellinger, DJ Chester, Miles Frazier, Emery Jones. Saw Kyle Parker and CJ Daniels sub in as well.
  • First team defense: Bradyn Swinson, Jacobian Guillory, Kimo Makane'ole, Sai'vion Jones, Harold Perkins, Greg Penn, Ashton Stamps, PJ Woodland (!), Major Burns, Sage Ryan, Jardin Gilbert
  • Nuss missed one deep ball to Aaron Anderson on his first throw, but hit his next two to finish 2-for-3. Hit Kyren Lacy on a deep ball down the right sideline.
  • Saw a lot of run plays mixed in.
  • Second team offense: Rickie Collins, Josh Williams, CJ Daniels, Javen Nicholas, Khai Prean, Mac Markway, Tyree Adams (LT), Bo Bordelon (RT), Coen Echols (C), Christian Stamps (RG), Paul Mubenga (LG). Saw some different WR's rotate in as well.
  • Second team defense: Javien Toviano, Kylin Jackson, Dashawn Mcbride, Jordan Allen, JK Johnson, Whit Weeks, West Weeks, Da'Shawn Womack, Shone Washington, Paris Shand, Preston Hickey.
  • First play was a big Josh Williams run. Second play was Rickie Collins taking off for a big gain after the pocket broke down. Third play was Whit Weeks stuffing a run. Fourth play was Collins finding Malachai Lane on a swing pass for a decent gain. We got cut off there.

LSU BASKETBALL Los Angeles Times and Ben Bolch officially apologize to LSU

Lesson learned, don’t mess with Mulkey…

Honestly, right or wrong aside, I’m still really surprised a leftist journalist got beaten by a conservative, heterosexual, southern female.

LSU FOOTBALL 04.04 Blake Baker Post Practice Presser

  • Thinks Bo Davis is doing a nice job with the interior of the D-line. Calls it a work in progress, but thinks they've showed improvement daily.
  • He and his family were really excited to get back here. Said it was very hard to leave Missouri, but you can't take for granted the opportunity to go home. Calls LSU's DC job one of his dream jobs.
  • Tries to allow his players to play free. Tries to give them opportunities to go out there and make plays.
  • Said he worked with Brian Kelly to assemble the coaching staff. Said it helps that he worked with everyone of the defensive assistants at previous stops.
  • PJ Woodland is a competitor. He's fiesty, physical and he can run. They've thrown him out there with the one's and with the best receivers, and he competes. Says he's been really impressed with him.
  • Thinks Harold Perkins has done a phenomenal job buying into what they want to do. Thinks they can use him in a variety of ways, but they want to find one thing and let his excel at that first. They're going to find out what he does best and build around that.
  • Says they want to get Harold Perkins to learn inside linebacker. Thinks he just needs more reps in practice and in games. Calls it an instinctual position, and the way you build that instinct is from reps.
  • Says the No. 1 goal is getting this defense to play with energy and passion.
  • Says this defense is very much a work in progress, but feels they're very far away from where they began.
  • He's seen some ups and downs from the secondary, but thinks they have a very aggressive group. Sage Ryan and Major Burns have stuck out to him so far. Says the corners have grown more than any group this spring. Feels they have a lot of depth in the secondary.
  • He bases his scheme off his personnel. Likes to have two guys you can put on an island outside and play a lot of man, but they're going to do whatever's best for his players.
  • He wears cleats at practice because he wants to get after his guys. Jokes if he's able to catch them, then that's a problem. On a more serious note, it helps him when he's demonstrating drills.

LSU BASKETBALL LSU MBB hosting big name transfer

I posted a thread about a week ago on UT Martin transfer, Jordan Sears, having received interest from Matt McMahon and LSU. It looks like they have him on campus for a visit as Sears posted a picture on his instagram of him at LSU Football Ops.

Sears averaged 21.6 PPG, 4.6 RPG and 4.5 APG while shooting 43.2% from three last season.

LSU FOOTBALL 04.02 Spring Practice Notes

We only got 20 minutes today and it was a lot of the same drills that we've been seeing in the last few practices, but here's what we saw:
  • Aaron Anderson continues to run with the first team. This is the third straight practice we've seen him running alongside Kyren Lacy and Chris Hilton Jr. - both of whom have been with the one's every practice.
  • During one drill, this was the WR order: Kyren Lacy, Chris Hilton, Aaron Anderson, Kyle Parker, CJ Daniels, Shelton Sampson, Zaivion Thomas, Javen Nicholas
  • Rickie Collins led the second team offense today. It's been AJ Swann all spring, but they changed it up today. He also had some chances to show off his legs, and he looked pretty quick out there.
  • Jardin Gilbert and Major Burns took first team reps at S, as they've done all spring. Behind them was Dashwn McBride and Jordan Allen, two young and promising safeties. Sage Ryan was nickel.
  • Saw a few different guys take first team CB reps: Jyaire Brown, Ashton Stamps, JK Johnson and Javien Toviano. Expect that to be their main rotation barring something unexpected. PJ Woodland could sneak his way in there as a true freshman if he keeps playing well. We've seen him running with the two's recently.
  • After Harold Perkins, Greg Penn and Whit Weeks, it looks like West Weeks, Tylen Singleton and Christian Brathwaite are the next three LB's.
  • Kimo Makane'ole made the move to DT for the spring, but he's now officially listed as a DL instead of OL.
  • Josh Williams took first team reps, Kaleb Jackson took second team reps. After them, walk-on Malachai Lane is the guy taking the third team snaps. If Trey Holly's situation isn't resolved by the start of the season and LSU doesn't add a RB in the portal, he'll be the third stringer. Edit: Forgot about Caden Durham since he's not on campus, he'll almost certainly be RB3 over Lane.
  • In the last few minutes of practice, we saw the LB's and DB's do a tackling drill together. There was not contact, but the goal was the wrap the ball carrier up in the open field. The DB's looked really good, don't know if I saw one that would've obviously been a missed tackle, but the LB's took some bad angles and would've missed a few.
  • Zy Alexander remains present at every practice. He's always in a jersey and watching the CB's work from the sideline.
  • Early enrollee De'Myrion Johnson was absent from practice.

LSU FOOTBALL 04.02 Joe Sloan Media Availability Notes

  • Seen a lot of growth. The big thing was developing an identity of the offense, and he thinks they're doing that. That identity is physical inside and explosive on the outside with the receivers.
  • Says the offensive line has been great. The vets are leading well and thinks DJ Chester has really come along nicely on the vocal side of playing center. That position is the QB of the offensive line, and as a redshirt freshman, sometimes that can be hard for them, but feels he's taken that role on nicely.
  • Thinks they have an unbelievable offensive staff. Says he and Cortez Hankton have a great relationship and thinks he has a great understanding on game planning and attacking defenses in the passing game.
  • They wanted a TE coach who understands play calling and how they want to use their TE's, and they think Slade Nagle fits that bill.
  • Calls Mason Taylor one of their best football players and one of the best TE's in the country. They want to find ways to get him the ball more, as we saw in the bowl game. Says they want to use Ka'Morreun Pimpton and Mac Markway more too.
  • Thinks CJ Daniels brings a level of consistency to the WR room. He's smart and physical, very strong at the catch point. Thinks they can move him around and use him to his strengths. Says his leadership and work habits have been amazing. He's learning the playbook more and more everyday and they feel he's doing a great job of that.
  • Want to "create punt returns on offense" with Zaivion Thomas and Aaron Anderson. Want to get them in space with the ball in their hands and blockers out in front.
  • Says playing center is a hard job to do. You have to get everyone on the same page, then snap the ball well, then block well. It's hard, but he feels DJ Chester has the talent and work ethic to step in and succeed.
  • Says Nuss has a ton of arm talent, but his emphasis has been figuring out when to take shots and when not to. Calls it a "do your job mentality."
  • They've had a lot of rushing concepts in their offense with Jayden, but they're emphasizing them a bit more this year with Nuss. They ran a lot of inside zone and zone reads with Jayden, but says they'll be a bit more diverse in game this year.
  • He's known Kyren Lacy since he was 15 years old. Seeing him grow has been phenomenal. Thinks the level of consistency he's shown since the bowl game has been the most impressive thing to him.
