RECRUITING Former Wisconsin D-lineman commits to LSU

Login to view embedded media Gio Paez, former Wisconsin defensive lineman who entered the transfer portal this off-season, has committed to LSU.

Paez was a 3-star recruit in the 2019 class and has one year of eligibility left. He totaled 23 tackles and 10 pressures in 2023 and played 377 of his 385 snaps last season at the DT position.

Some much needed depth at the interior of the defensive line.

LSU FOOTBALL 03.26 LSU Football Spring Practice Notes

We only got to see 20 minutes of practice today, and it was a lot of individual drills, but here's what we got for you:
  • First team receivers today were Kyren Lacy, Chris Hilton and Aaron Anderson. We've seen Anderson, Kyle Parker and CJ Daniels rotate in and out of the first team, but CHJ and KL seem to be constants.
  • Second team receivers today were Daniels, Zavion Thomas and Kyle Parker.
  • It really looks like any of those six guys could start at wide receiver. They all have looked really good in spring and it's going to be tough to keep two of them off the field at all times.
  • Emery Jones looked to be back in full.
  • Javien Toviano, Ashton Stamps were first team CB's with Ryan at nickel.
  • Jake Olsen was very hands on with Major Burns as he takes over the star/rover roll in Blake Baker's defense.
  • Greg Penn, Harold Perkins and Whit Weeks all look like they're the solidified starting LB's. Not really a surprise, but they seem to be the definite three.
  • Mason Taylor told us last week that they'll run a lot more 12 personnel this season (2 TE sets), which will involve a lot more blocking for that group, and through the first 20 minutes of practice, they were solely doing blocking drills. Expect to see those guys step up in the run and pass blocking game this season.
  • Outside of one drill, from what I saw, every S drill was focused on tackling. This group struggled in that area last season, so it looks like a major point of emphasis with Baker and Olsen.
  • I've said this before, but Jardin Gilbert looks miles ahead of the rest of the DB's size wise and agility wise. He should be a beast this season.
  • Zy Alexander was in cleats, but didn't have pads and didn't participate in drills.
  • Bradyn Swinson, Jacobian Guillory, Jalen Lee and Sai'vion Jones took first team DL reps.
We have the Pro Day tomorrow starting at 10am-2pm, so keep your eye out for that content tomorrow.

LSU BASEBALL LSU vs SLU Post Game Presser Notes

Jay Johnson
  • Thought it was a great night for the pitching staff. 8 guys held them to four runs.
  • Thinks Micah Bucknam has better command from last season. He’s making more “pitchers pitches”
  • Doesn’t think their success on the mound tonight will translate to this weekend.
  • Brought Mac here for his experience and he’s been amazing for them recently. 3-3 today.
  • Thought Tommy was productive last weekend with walks even though he didn’t hit well. Liked what he saw from him tonight.
  • Says DJ knew he was in for one batter. He threw one pitch then came out, but liked that he executed that pitch.
  • Says Cam Johnson has had a lot of improvement with his breaking ball.
  • Wants all his outfielders to play all the outfield spots, but that’s not always realistic. However, Bingham can play everywhere and gives them a lot of flexibility.
Micah Bucknam
  • Felt good. Felt he was able to get after it and command his pitches.
  • Trying out a sinker to give him some pitch diversity and help w his slider.
  • Says the slider has always been his strength as a pitcher.
  • Says when he came here last year, Dylan Crews hit his slider 400 feet and he realized he needed to work on it, and thinks it’s improved a lot.
  • Says today was the first time he’s really thrown a sinker.
  • Says pitching in the SEC is very different from Canada. They have maybe 4 guys they play a year who play D1 baseball.
Mac Bingham
  • Says it’s much nicer playing at the Box than at Arizona. Their LF wall is 366 feet, so he gets more homers here.
  • Says they’ve seen how well they can play, but have had bad moments. Need to find ways to play their best more consistently.
  • Hayden has been a big part of his hitting development. He picks his brain all the time about power hitting.
  • Says the fan base in the SEC is a bit more invested than in the PAC-12.
  • Seeing Ethan Frey succeed hasn’t surprised him. He works really hard and grinds every day, so he’s happy to see him succeeding.

LSU FOOTBALL News & Notes: Spring Practice 3/23

Today marked spring practice No. 7 for LSU and it was our first expanded look at practice as they allowed us to view almost the entire outside portion of practice. Got to observe nearly two hours of practice today. Working through my notes, here's what I've got for today's News & Notes.

A couple of Quick Thoughts
  • The first thing I want to comment on is the organization in practice. I can't point out what it is, but things just seemed so much more organized with the drills, the communication between the coaching staff and from the staff to the players. They were maximizing reps, wasting very little if any time between reps.
  • Another thing that stood out to me was the communication between the staff and the players. In particular on the defensive side of the ball. Blake Baker, Corey Raymond, Jake Olsen were all very vocal when coaching the LB's/DB's during seven-on-seven portions of practice.
  • Brian Kelly talked about wanting to focus on the running game and was more focused with play selection in the running reps over packages. He talked about losing Jayden Daniels who "Was" the running game last season. So, there's been a heavy emphasis on the running game this spring.
  • It looks like the new base defense will feature four linemen, two true LB's and four DB's with a "Star" essentially a fifth DB.
  • Saw Jaboree Antoine out at practice checking things out. He was chopping it up with Sage Ryan on the sideline during team session. Ryan was commenting on his length.
News & Notes - Offense
  • Kyren Lacey and Chris Hilton JR were again getting first team reps at WR.
  • Aaron Anderson got some reps with the 1's today and worked with the 1's throughout the majority of practice from what I saw. He replaced Kyle Parker, who worked primarily with the second team offense today.
  • Emory Jones was back at practice today and was dressed, though he was not participating in any contact drills. He did work on positional stuff with the OL groups but was not in on any of the team stuff that had contact. BK did not comment on Jones or note an injury of any kind, but he did say that he and Brad Davis know what they're getting out guys like Will Campbell and Emory Jones and he wants to get a lot of the younger guys more reps this spring.
  • Tyree Adams and Bo Bordelon shared reps with the 1's at RT. Tyree Adams was getting the bulk of the work with the first team.
  • Adams/Bordelon were also getting second team reps at LT and RT respectively.
  • Second team OL was Tyree Adams, Paul Mebenga, Coen Echols, Ethan Calloway and Bo Bordelon left to right.
  • CJ Daniels, Zavion Thomas and Kyle Parker were getting the second team reps at WR. It's clear that nothing is being given to the WR transfers and that they'll have to earn their way to a starting spot.
  • Josh Williams and Kaleb Jackson were 1 & 2 respectively at the RB position, walk-on RB Malachi Lane was getting the third team reps behind them.
  • Josh Williams looked really good with the ball in his hands, showing off some shiftiness and power. There was one point in practice when they went from no tackling into tackling and He gained about 5-6 yards before being swarmed by the defense, but he powered through and appeared to have broken what looked like four to six tackles, but I think the refs on the field blew the play dead for forward progress because they brought the ball back, but it was about as impressive a 5 yard gain as you'll see.
  • Malachi Lane actually put together some nice reps in the No. 3 spot. I don't expect come fall he'll be this high up the depth chart but given the shortage of RB's right now he's getting his opportunity to shine.
  • I'm not going to sugar coat things for the QB's. They looked good against air with no defense, but there was some inconsistency when we got to the team sessions and honestly, I want to say a big part of that was due to the defense. I'll have more on some individual plays later.
  • No surprise but Garrett Nussmeier got all the first team reps.
  • Rickie Collins was getting the reps with the second team. AJ Swann was working primarily with the third team, but I think he got some second team reps in as well.
  • Colin Hurley rounded out the QB group and got the reps behind the top three.
  • Third team receivers were Shelton Sampson Jr., Javen Nicholas and Khai Prean.
  • The hierarchy at TE looked much like what we saw last season. 1. Mason Taylor. 2. Mac Markway, 3. K. Pimpton
  • Third team OL was Kahyree Lee Jr, Christian Stamps, Braden Augustus, Joseph Cryer, Kobe Roberts left to right. Christian Stamps made a nice play during team drills (more on that further down).
  • The early part of practice saw the offensive line working on pad level and power blocking before transitioning to combo blocks. The running backs were working on foot work, cuts and catching the ball out of the back field. TE's were working on blocking while the defense worked out on field two and the QB's were on field 1 throwing against air.
  • Got to see the QB's work on bootlegs/roll outs throwing on the move to quick outs toward the sideline to assistant coaches.
  • The QB's and WR's went through a couple of drills where they were working on quick passes. No defense here but everything was quick, crisp and on target. The primary focus for the WR's was to catch the ball and immediately turn up the field and run. Coaching staff had them working very fast with tempo during these drills, getting several reps in. The QB's and WR's were all sharp during this session, didn't see a single dropped pass everything was on target and caught, granted these were all short crossing routes/hitches five yards or less. But the key takeaway here is they were doing exactly what they were supposed to be doing, and they were doing it with tempo.
  • Watched a few QB/RB read option reps. Not sure how many of these we'll see with Nussmeier and Swann, but Joe Sloan was working with AJ Swann on the disconnect coaching him on his hands/placement and keeping two hands on the ball. On Swann's next rep, Sloan praised the transfer signal caller's improvement after being coached up.
  • Working against the scout team, Garrett Nussmeier hit Chris Hilton on a deep post.
  • Nussmeier hit CJ Daniels on an out route to the right sideline for about 20-25 yards.

News & Notes - Special Teams Notes

  • One of the first things we saw as we walked onto the practice field was special team reps. Damian Ramos was working on PAT/FG's working backwards after each make. He was drilling them down the center of the uprights. I didn't see a single miss from the portion I was able to observe.
  • Peyton Todd seemed to be getting the reps at first-team punter.
  • Badger Hargett was getting the reps behind Todd.
  • At punt return we saw Zavion Thomas, Aaron Anderson, Kyle Parker and Javen Nicholas all getting reps. Zavion Thomas appeared to be the No. 1 from what I could tell.
  • Looked like Whit Weeks and Major Burns were on punt coverage in the first team, that's something that stood out to me.

News & Notes - Defense

  • Sage Ryan was back at safety again. His role this spring appears to have shifted back to more of a traditional safety than a CB/Nickel role and let me tell you, he really put together an impressive practice. I'll have more individually as I work through my notes, but he telegraphed the plays extremely well and put himself in prime position to make plays over and over. I think he ended the day with three interceptions on the day, one of them he took back for a pick-six. He had a really, really nice day, probably the best day out of anyone on the field that I saw.
  • Ashton Stamps and Javien Toviano were getting most of the first team reps at CB.
  • At safety it was Sage Ryan and Jardin Gilbert.
  • Major Burns was the "Star" getting 1st team reps. BK talked a little about him moving to that new position saying they want someone that can play man, play zone, and tackle. They feel he fits what they're looking for in that position and it gets him closer to the line of scrimmage.
  • Bradyn Swinson and Sai'vion Jones were at DE/Edge with the first team defense.
  • At DT we saw Jacobian Guillory and Jalen Lee getting the first team reps, but I saw Preston Hickey find his way in for a few reps with the first team as well.
  • Greg Penn III and Harold Perkins were the LB's with the first team.
  • Jyaire Brown and PJ Woodland got the majority of the second team reps, but there was some movement here between a different guys.
  • Da'Shawn Womack and Paris Shand were seeing the reps at DE/Edge with the 2's.
  • Kimo Makane'ole and Shone Washington were getting the interior DL reps with the 2's. Preston Hickey rotated in at times.
  • True freshman CB PJ Woodland had a pretty solid day, he made a few plays defensively in the reps we were able to see. He broke up a pass on one play and on another play read a screen play perfectly and would have absolutely annihilated an RB on a swing pass had it been full contact (still no tackling at that point in practice.)
  • Corey Raymond pulled Jyaire Brown off to the side and was coaching him up. I missed what happened, but Brown did something Raymond didn't like that he was trying to get corrected.
  • True freshman Dashawn McBryde was impressive today. He's been all over the place making multiple plays and defensive stops from the safety position.

OLYMPIC SPORTS 03.25 LSU Gymnastics Presser Notes

Jay Clark
  • Pleased with everything on Saturday. It was a great "shot in the arm" for this team. Thinks it instilled some confidence in them.
  • Loved the fans and atmosphere at the Smoothie King Center. They traveled well and it was very evident which team was the "home" team.
  • Thinks the team is hitting their stride at the right time. They've had multiple scores of 198+ recently.
  • They train for having two meets in three days for situations, which is what the postseason will be like. Says those off days between meets will be recovery days, and that's how they've treated it throughout the season.
  • Thinks all regionals are tough. Having Kentucky, who's a very capable team and has beat them this season, in their regional is going to be tough, and then having Arkansas who's hosting the regional is another challenge.
  • Says this time of year, less is more from a physical stand point. They want to be efficient in practice so they can keep their team as healthy as he can.
  • It's a blank slate for them now. They don't get to host or choose their rotation for being the top seed, so everything is on an equal playing field now. Thinks they should either go to neutral sites or have the top seed host, but that's been talked about a lot and it hasn't gotten much traction.
  • Thinks it would be at least 2027 before SEC's come back to NOLA. Wants to see New Orleans, Tampa, Orlando, Atlanta or some city like that become a permanent location for the event.
  • Says in many ways, the SEC Championship draws more eyes than the national championship. They draw a bigger crowd than the natty most years and the crowd in NOLA this year was very big.
  • Thinks this team has so much fun which allows them to be so good. When they're having fun, they're loose and comfortable.
Konnor McClain and Kiya Johnson
  • McClain didn't have many personal expectations heading into SEC's. She's excited about winning the beam championship, but she's more concerned with winning as a team.
  • Both are really excited for this post season. Kiya missed last season's run and Konnor wasn't here yet, but they are confident going into this year's postseason and feel they have a good chance to advance.
  • Both say they're so confident when they head to floor. In SEC's they were trailing heading into the last event, but they had so much confidence in themselves as they went to floor and knew they were going to win.
  • Says earning the No. 2 seed just shows all the hard work they put in in the gym.
  • They lost to Kentucky earlier this year, and they play them in this regional, but they know if they stick to what's been working and do their normal gymnastics, they'll be just fine.
  • McClain says Saturday was the most fun she's had at a competition in her entire life. She loves the team aspect and winning big meets as a team.
  • McClain says it's a lot of pressure competing at the college level, but she's competed in a lot of big meets in her life which allows her to be so confident in big moments like on Saturday.
  • Kiya says having the two weeks between SEC's and regionals is big for them. It's a taxing season and they're looking forward to getting some rest.

LSU BASKETBALL LSU vs MTSU Post Game Presser Notes

Kim Mulkey
  • Jokes that she coaches a very shy team and has to get them going. In a more serious tone, she says they're so much fun and she's blessed to coach a team like this.
  • She's so happy for LSU. Says a lot of people take a Sweet 16 appearance for granted, but a lot of teams and coaches don't accomplish that in their career.
  • MTSU hadn't lost a game since December and thinks they're a very tough team with a HOF coach. Gives a lot of credit to them for their first half performance.
  • Thought their aggressiveness wore them down in the second half, so even when they got open shots, they were missing them.
  • Liked the assist to turnover ratio tonight. They had 17 assists to 7 turnovers.
  • Loved what she saw from HVL despite scoring just four points. Her defensive energy in the second half was the catalyst for them.
  • Thought they played more cohesive on defense. When Wheeler came off screens, the post players helped Poa and HVL.
  • Says it was a bit of a shock that they were out rebounded in the fist half.
Flau'jae Johnson and Angel Reese
  • Johnson said HVL came out at halftime and played really good defense against Savannah Wheeler. Says it allowed them to jump the passing lanes and get some steals.
  • Reese says Flau'jae's energy comes from the defensive end. Says having Flau'jae be such a leader as a sophomore is huge for the team.
  • Knew MTSU was going to play hard for 40 minutes after erasing a 18 point deficit on Friday. They're a tough team, but they came out with a lot of energy in the second half and they felt the momentum shift.
  • Says offense hasn't been much of an issue, so they knew they just needed to step up on defense. Calls Savannah Wheeler one of the toughest guards they played all year, but they were able to limit her impact in the second half which helped them flip the switch defensively.
  • Johnson says she's learned so much since arriving to college. She never missed a day with Coach Starky watching film and she says something finally clicked this year which has allowed her to take the next step.
  • Reese says she loves getting assists and wants to lead the team every game in assists. She threw one to Mikaylah and she hit a step back three but she joked that she didn't think she got an assist for that.
  • Calls Aneesah Morrow a matchup nightmare. She can rebound, pass, shoot, defend and says she would hate playing against her.
  • Says they are able to get on each other when they make mistakes and nobody takes it personal.
  • Reese said she couldn't hear at points in this game because the crowd was so loud.
