RECRUITING Under the Lights: Checking out LSU 2024 WR commit Jelani Watkins

Death Valley Insider's Jermaine Every went "Under the Lights" to check out 2024 LSU four-star WR commit Jelani Watkins in action against Beaumont (TX) West Brook. See what @jermaineevery had to say about his trip to see Watkins and more.

Interesting note: Watkins told Jermaine after their interview that he was really close to committing to Texas A&M, but when he went to visit A&M the WR coach there "Wasn't ready to talk to him" said coach Sherman at LSU was his primary recruiter and really made him feel at home. Told Jermaine that players need to follow their heart, a lot of people wanted him to stay in state.

See what else he had to say as well as Jermaine's thoughts and more by checking out the feature above.

RECRUITING Class '24 DB Marcus Dawson

From right here in BR LA University HS. Dad played at Grambling
17th to 31st ranked HS player in Louisiana by the other recruiting services

Think this dude could be a "Sleeper" where ever he ends up. LSU already has D McBryde & Joel Rogers etc; so maybe not enough room?

Smaller in State Schools like UL-Monroe ; Grambling & Texas State ; UTSA have Offered.

LSU FOOTBALL 09/28 Brian Kelly Media Availability

  • Omar Speights will be in the rotation. He's 100%, but he won't see a full workload against Ole Miss' fast temp offense.
  • Says he's seen Brian Thomas become a much more mature player and man this offseason, and he knew he'd become a guy they could count on.
  • Ole Miss has committed to up tempo offense and has been running with Jaxon Dart more. He said it's tough to defend a mobile QB, so it adds a new dimension to their offense.
  • Pass rush lanes, not tackling in the open field and busted coverage has cost them on third down defense. Said they drilled down hard on those fundamentals in this week of practice.
  • Aaron Anderson had a bit of a hamstring injury today and didn't finish practice. Said it didn't look too bad, but said hamstrings are hamstrings and he'll update his status on gameday.
  • Thinks Quinshon Judkins has been banged up a bit this year, combine that with Dart's emergence as a runner and he thinks that's why he's had a slow start.
  • Highlights Ole Miss' explosiveness. Says they do a really good job setting up the deep shot with runs and underneath routes. Their focus will be minimizing those big plays.
  • Says Maason Smith is playing well in the middle of the D-line. He's playing a different role playing outside the 3 and 5 technique so he isn't able to get some of those flashy plays he made in his freshman season.

LSU FOOTBALL ST evaluation

ST play was solid again v Arkansas
LSU solved the poor kick off coverage issue by booting it in the EZ

We didn’t punt or return many punts , but the few punting plays were well executed

Ramos was perfect on PATs and of course was cool as could be on the winning FG

Big improvement from last year

With our Secondary situation, the defense is just going to have to be opportunistic.

It actually reminds me in some ways of the 2019 defense, who's personnel were collectively better than their overall numbers. Basically they're going to have to work to limit the big plays between the 20's and then try to hold teams to FG's instead of TD's - meanwhile, between the 20's they need to go for big plays of their own, i.e. sacks and turnovers. That's going to be their identity through the rest of the season. The numbers won't be there, but the wins should be, especially as we get our ground game going in the second half of games.

LSU FOOTBALL Run Game ??

For the first time this the RBs were able to gash a defense , keep the chains moving and run out the clock

Questions:
Did the OL assert their will on the Hogs D ?
Was Diggs the main reason for the success
Was the Ark. Defense simply worn out

more importantly have they found the rhythm to keep the run game going

RECRUITING Latest Intel on Rivals100 Athlete Terry Bussey

If you ask Timpson (TX) athlete Terry Bussey if he knows what school he's picking on Thursday, he'll claim that he hasn't made a final decision yet. Bussey is set to make his announcement on Thursday at 3:45 PM at Timpson High School. So where does LSU stand? The latest we're hearing is that it's going primarily be a battle between Texas A&M, Oklahoma and LSU. He's fresh off a recent visit to LSU but Texas A&M has widely been considered the school out in front for several months now. They're the clear team to beat in this recruitment and I'm just not sure that LSU or any of the other suitors have done enough to overtake the Aggies in Bussey's recruitment.

He's got a great relationship with the staff at Texas A&M and while I haven't yet submitted a FutureCast pick, I'd be surprised if it wasn't all Aggie on Thursday. I don't want to rule out the other programs and that's kind of why I'm a little hesitant to put in a FutureCast because LSU got the recent visit over the weekend, but all the buzz remains around the Aggies, and I think it would be a surprise if he chose anywhere other than Texas A&M come Thursday.

LSU FOOTBALL Jayden Daniels Named SEC Offensive Player of the Week

Gents, no surprise here.

Our defensive backfield and O-Line need to continue to develop. And we need to focus on 1-2 primary running backs, but this season begins and ends with Jayden Daniels. He is carrying the team on his shoulders right now. And we are leading the SEC in yards and scoring because of his leadership. 530 yards per game and 42.8 points per game. Sure, he sails a pass from time to time (drops are a bigger problem) and is not perfect, but who is?

Huge game this week! I'll be there and we need a 'play against bama' sense of urgency this weekend to win. would truly suck to go to Ole Miss with 10 friends and walk back to the cars after losing. Geaux Tigers!

LSU FOOTBALL 09/27 Brian Kelly Teleconference

  • Wants the team to play with more maturity this week. Felt they lost their focus on time and gave up self inflicted wounds against Arkansas.
  • Says Greg Brooks is making progress. Says he's up on his feet and moving around during rehab, but he's still got a lot of work to do in his recovery.
  • One thing they look for in corners and safeties is verifiable speed, thinks that's one of the hardest things to get in a DB. Says sometimes in high school, you don't see their true speed because they don't always play high talent. Another feature they want is length to help with bigger receivers.
  • He thinks the clock running after first down now doesn't have a huge impact on the game. Feels it may take away one possession, but they're just trying to maximize every play to combat the new rule. Says since it doesn't change anything in the last 2 minutes of the 2Q and 4Q, he feels it hasn't effected it that much at all.
