LSU BASKETBALL 01/04 Matt McMahon Media Availability

Matt McMahon, Jordan Wright and Hunter Dean talks about the non-conference schedule and previews the SEC opener against Texas A&M on Saturday.

Jordan Wright and Hunter Dean
  • Wright says the team feels their offense improving. Says having Jalen Cook back has helped them, he's been a calming presence for them on that side of the ball.
  • Wright talked about the sec schedule. Says every game is tough and thinks they need to be tough to win in the conference. Says they have the talent and all that, they just need to be as physical as everyone else.
  • Dean is excited for his first season of SEC play to play some tougher competition.
  • Dean said he's been working to get more minutes. Using his energy and hustle has earned him more minutes this year. He's used to getting inserted in the lineup because of his skill, but here he had to work for it.
  • Wright feels they're a completely different team with Cook on the floor. "Jalen has kind of eased the game...He calmed out team down and gave us the confidence we need."
  • Dean says he's been a ball screen big his whole career, so with Cook, they're finally able to do that in their offense which has helped him these last three games.
  • Wright thinks this team is very unselfish. They have 8-9 guys who can get real minutes and contribute, so he thinks by not caring about individual stats, it's allowed them to feed the hot hand every night.
  • Wright started the season in a slump, and he feels he added pressure on himself early in the season, but now that he has started to feel more adjusted and used to the system, he feels he's playing a lot better (which he is).
  • They think they have something to prove in SEC play. They're record isn't what they want it to be right now, but they feel they're in a good spot right now. Thinks winning in College Station could kick start something for them.
  • Wright says he's played against Tyrece Radford a lot growing up. Says he's competitive and is really looking forward to facing off with him on Saturday. Says it's at least the 10th time they've played each other.
  • They think a successful SEC schedule would be them just playing their hardest, getting the most out of the team and being competitive in every game. Says it's hard to predict records, but they want to finish on the top of the SEC and make the tournament.
Matt McMahon
  • Very pleased with the progress his team has made the last three weeks.
  • Says Texas A&M has been very dominant on the offensive side of the ball. Very efficient offense that gets to the line a lot.
  • Thinks the team has played better since Jalen Cook got back. Their assist rate is way up, their turnover rate is way down. He makes everyone around him better and makes the game easier for them.
  • Thinks they're getting closer to a set rotation. This is the "10th day since June 1st" they've had their whole team available.
  • They've had a lot of practice time over the last few weeks, and he feels they've gotten better at defensive rebounding and three point shooting defense during the time off. Excited to see how they perform in those areas.
  • A&M is one of the best offensive rebounding teams they've faced. They have 51 offensive rebounds in their last two games.
  • They don't turn the ball over much, couple that with the offensive rebounds they get and you've got a pretty good offense.
  • Cook brings some creativity to the team. He's improved their shot quality and helps speed them up in transition.
  • Opening the SEC schedule against the team that finished second in the league last year is going to be tough, but he's excited to see how this team can perform against the top competition in the nation.
  • They're fifth in the country in steals now. Feels their defense has been their identity, but early on, all their turnovers held them back. Feels this is a fast paced team that can shut you down on defense, they just need to continue to build on offense.

LSU FOOTBALL Defensive Coordinator Hot Board

Been grinding the phone lines all afternoon and into the evening. Blake Baker's name continues to be brought up in just about every conversation I have about the opening. I'm expecting a phone call any minute from a contact that could shed some more light into the Baker situation. May have another update for you later this evening.

With that said there's been a lot of names thrown around in connection to the position. Our Hot Board includes the two names we've discussed previously, another trusted Brian Kelly colleague, a few other Louisiana and or BK connections and a couple of other hot DC names that will come up for just about every opening in college football. I'm not ready to include every linked name being tossed around.

Me and @Luke Hubbard both worked on this feature.

INTEL Defensive Staff Update Wednesday 2:45 PM

Well this was not the ideal day for this to happen personally as I was out of pocket most of the day traveling. In my first defensive staff update back in November, I mentioned that I was anticipating at least three to four changes on the defensive staff. As you all now know this morning, Brian Kelly informed those he was not bringing back. I've been on the road most of the morning, getting situated now and going to do some digging and start making some calls.

The Buyout - According to Yahoo! Sports' Ross Dellenger LSU is on the hook for a $5.4M buyout for the coaches they let go.

Here's what we've known and some reminders on what I've previously shared here in The Quad and some other notable names to monitor.

Names to Monitor

Blake Baker DC Missouri -
I told you guys in an update back in November, that Brian Kelly has been in contact with Blake Baker. He was a name to watch for DC. Since that update and others afterward he has signed a contract extension with Missouri. I do not yet know the details of that contract extension and depending on the verbiage of what's laid out in that contract it could keep LSU from pursuing Baker. We know that Baker has interest in returning to Louisiana. He was gunning for the Tulane vacancy after Fritz left for UH. Baton Rouge would be a nice landing spot if he were to make a move to return to Louisiana. His wife is a former soccer player at LSU and as we've said multiple times now, he has desire to return to Louisiana. I reached out to our Missouri publisher to see what he's heard and with school being shutdown etc, he hasn't had his public records request filled yet. So not sure what's in his new extension verbiage wise, and that could ultimately determine whether or not he'd be a candidate. But given the contact from Kelly during the season, I'll say he's a name to monitor for now.

Lance Guidry DC Miami - Guidry was another name I heard starting back in November. The most interesting thing about his name being dropped was there were some position coaches' names that came in connection with it. I was also told that if Guidry ended up being the guy at DC he would likely coach Safeties. Not knowing the layout of Bakers recently signed extension, Guidry may be the most likely of the two.

Corey Raymond - He wasn't retained by current Florida head coach Billy Napier. He's a name we've been hearing time and time again. Definitely a name to watch for the cornerbacks position. His name was mentioned in connection with Guidry's in the conversations I've had. But doesn't necessarily have to be a package deal. He could realistically come in as a plug and play recruiter/coach from day one no matter what DC you bring in. I know there's been a lot of chatter on his work ethic and commitment, but his Louisiana ties are as deep as you can get and he's got a history of elite level recruiting. I was told that he still has a house in Baton Rouge, may already be back in Baton Rouge at this point. He too wanted to return to Louisiana and as previously mentioned in The Situation Room, he's only four years away from a Louisiana retirement and that's something we were told he wants. He's a guy that could come in and coach CB's but could also manage both CB's and Safeties. May require both, or a creative title to make it work financially for LSU. But logistically I think he'd be an ace hire especially if you just bring him in to coach CB's.

Bo Davis current DL Coach for Texas - Another name that was dropped when we first started talking about a defensive staff shakeup was Texas DL coach Bo Davis. He was another name mentioned in connection with Guidry, but his pedigree wouldn't require a package deal with Guidry either. I will say that if LSU wants to make a splash with Davis, it's going to cost some money. He's already making $1.3M at Texas, so LSU would likely have to make him one of the highest paid defensive line coaches to bring him back and I'm not sure that Texas is willing to let him walk that easy, so it could get expensive. May have to get creative with the title here too to make it work financially. This is another plug play recruiter/coach that would be an ace hire for Kelly if he can make it work.

Bob Diaco Special Team/Outside Linbackers LSU - Diaco is an interesting name that has worked with Kelly at four different stops now. Has a strong pedigree as both a DC and linebackers coach. Worked with Kelly as a DC at Central Michigan, Cincinatti and Notre Dame. He's a guy that Kelly trusts and given their history together should absolutely be a name to keep an eye on going forward. Especially if LSU misses on some of the other names on the list.

There's a few more names I've heard in connection this afternoon, but I think the majority of it is speculation and chatter. Still trying to weed out what's legitimate and what's not. So I'm going to be on the phones, doing some digging to see what we can come up with. We'll obviously update you with anything new, but knowing how Brian Kelly operates, I'm expecting information to be pretty limited, so I'll have to work sources elsewhere most likely. If I hear anything from the agent side of things, I'll probably share it with you but I'm going to specify it's agent chatter because I don't trust those guys. They deliberately create stuff all the time, I've seen it time and time again.

LSU FOOTBALL Ashton Stamps has successful surgery after freshman season

Freshman corner Ashton Stamps played the majority of his freshman year with lower body injuries. It started with a hamstring, then moved to a groin injury.

Just a couple days after the Tigers bowl game, Stamps had successful surgery. It’s unclear if it was for the hamstring or groin, but it seems like it went well and shouldn’t hold him back in any way for next season.

LSU BASKETBALL 01/03 Kim Mulkey Media Availability Notes

Kim Mulkey previews the Tigers SEC opener against Missouri on Thursday night.
  • Doesn't think Missouri is much different from last season. Hayley Frank is their leading scorer and shoots nearly 39% from three.
  • Their offense is predicated around shooting the three ball which can make them very hard to defend. Thinks their bigs are going to have to defend the three ball really well. Is worried about Del Rosario because of her size, but she's very confident in Aneesah and Angel at defending the three.
  • If she'd have everyone together the whole time (no injuries or players away from the team), she'd feel very good about where she is with her team, but they've dealt with a lot of things and thinks they're still improving.
  • Says Angel is passing up a lot of shots. Says she's all about winning first, not just about double-doubles.
  • Says a lot of her girls are getting back into the flow after Christmas break, so she's going to have to be careful with her subsitutions.
  • They lead the NCAA in free throw attempts. They need to shoot it better, but she's happy with the way they're getting to the line.
  • Says Haley felt good after her first game back from a foot injury. She's good to go from here on out.
  • She's impressed with how this team keeps winning despite the injuries and off the court issues. Said the Virginia game was one that was set up for them to lose, but they fought hard and won.
  • Says they need to be more polished on the defensive side of the floor. She won't get excited about what this team could be until they start playing better defense.
  • Thinks the SEC is the best conference in WBB despite only having two teams ranked. Says rankings aren't all they're made up to be. They're based on opinions.
  • Thinks it's hard to judge how far this team has come because of not having all their pieces out on the court. The teams been doing what they need to do to win these non-conference games, but they're flushing those and they're starting fresh in SEC play.
  • Says Aneesah makes them better defensively because she's so active with her feet and hands. Loves her game and she can trust her to not pick up fouls on the perimeter.
  • Mikaylah is going to see how she'll be guarded differently than in non-conference. She's got to know that they will know everything about her, and it'll be interesting to see how she handles that. This is that next level up for her, but she's confident in her abilities.
  • If you look at the team right now, they have seven players they're really going to go to. She's trying to find that eighth player. Says the rest of the pack haven't separated themselves from the others enough to know, so it will be all situational.
