RECRUITING Ahmad Breaux wants to build a 'family bond' at LSU

I talked with Ahmad Breaux last night about the staff changes and what he wanted to accomplish at LSU:

Lastly, he told me he chose Michigan to win the National Championship. He made the correct choice.

OFF TOPIC How would you grade this week for LSU Athletics?

No news here, just saw a post on twitter that got me thinking, how would you grade this week for LSU Athletics?

  • ReliaQuest Bowl win over Wisconsin
  • Garrett Nussmeier throws for 395 yards, 3 TD's
  • Harlem Berry commits to LSU
  • Defensive staff fired
  • Blake Baker hired as DC
  • Bryce Underwood commits to LSU
  • WBB win over Missouri, Gymnastics win over No. 14 Ohio State, MBB beats Texas A&M in SEC opener.
Feels like at least an A, but I want to hear your thoughts.

OLYMPIC SPORTS LSU Gymnastics: LSU edges out Ohio State; Post meet presser Notes/Story Added

Jay Clark, Haleigh Bryant and Amari Drayton talks about the Tigers win over No. 14 Ohio State in the season opener.

Coach Clark
  • Said they made it a lot more difficult than it needed to be, but their routines are very difficult for this early in the season.
  • Wasn't expecting the first three on beam to struggle, but feels the last three finished strong.
  • Thought they looked tight in spots. Think the PMAC environment overwhelmed them a bit early, but they still love it and need fed off it late.
  • Kiya Johnson's calf cramped up on beam, so that's why she didn't perform on floor. Says because of that, they got to see Amari Drayton, a freshman, perform and absolutely rock it with a 9.925
  • After Ballard fell on beam, he was very impressed with how she came out on floor. Said she would let that mistake effect her in the past, but she didn't and scored a 9.900 on floor.
  • Aloyna has a lower leg injury that has her out for the foreseeable future.
  • Said the floor effort tonight was a championship level effort. Says everyone wants to talk about how great this team is (they're ranked third), but they don't want to fall into that trap. They just need to focus on their goal of getting back to the championships.
  • Thinks the start was "solid." They saw great things out of some freshman and a great effort to come back and win.
  • Thought Aleah Finnegan looked like Aleah Finnegan, and that's a good thing after her wrist injury.
Haleigh Bryant and Amari Drayton
  • Drayton said it was really exciting to get her first start and that it "didn't even feel real."
  • Bryant thought tonight was a great baseline for this team. They weren't trying to be perfect tonight, just wanted to get started on a good foot.
  • Bryant said the crowd was absolutely amazing tonight and pretty much every night. Says the fans are one of the main reasons she came to LSU.
  • Bryant said it was amazing to see Drayton step in on floor last second and score so well. Said she was a "proud mom."
  • Drayton thinks the vets have been a big inspiration to all the freshman and have done a great job mentoring them.
  • Drayton said she just wanted to be like Haleigh Bryant while in high school, and now they're teammates and she's performing right after her on events.
  • Bryant says every team is different, but they've focused on learning how each other work and they've made an emphasis on being nice and helping all the new comers get acclimated to how they do things.

INTEL Saturday Afternoon Staffing Update

Everyone is asking about staffing updates and I've been working on getting some updates for you.

Defensive Line

Yesterday the Bo Davis for DL coach chatter and confidence seemed to take a hit. I started to hear the name Kevin Peoples of Missouri in connection with Blake Baker.

Hes another key piece for Mizzou and they absolutely want to keep him on staff.

I'm told that he's currently hosting recruits for Missouri, so not sure how far along any talks are at this time.

I was also told that he could be a guy that Eli Drinkwitz looks at for DC and it may come down to that if they want to keep him.

Another name that came up was Karl Dunbar. But I don't believe there is much traction there. I have said it before. I've heard multiple times from sources close to Dunbar that he loves his job in Pittsburgh and is really enjoying the NFL job. Was also told he didn't love recruiting and that's another big reason he's expected to stay in the NFL.

DB's

Continue to hear Corey Raymond's name in connection with the opening and I am told this is the job Raymond wants. That isn't all that surprising given his history at LSU and falls in line with what we've heard and shared here previously.

There are others that have come up in conversations for these positions.

Bob Diaco

There's a real chance he could stay as an onfield assistant. Has a ton of experience working with linebackers. New DC Blake Baker is a former LB himself and also has a ton of experience coaching LB's. There's a thought they could split the LB duties and someone is brought in to coach DB's as a unit. Baker also has experience coaching safeties and did so at Mizzou, he could coach safeties, leaving the door open for Diaco to stay on field as LB coach and then bring in someone to coach CB's.

Haven't heard anything concrete or "done". Just passing along some of the chatter I've been hearing.
