I know that they are trying to stir up the drama...

...but every article I read seems to deliberately leave out significant information on Daniels' resume when listing the credentials of each candidate. Sometimes it's the fact that Nix & Penix played an extra game, sometimes its the fact that his QBR leaves the other two in the dust, or just posting passing totals, or failing to mention all the things he's done that no one in college football history have done...

It really just gave me an eye-roll and a chuckle, but after watching Penix get handed the Maxwell Award over a guy who put up 80 more yards a game and had 14 more TD's with 5 fewer interceptions, it's actually got me wondering if people are really this clueless and/or are deliberately ignoring all the reasons why Daniels clearly deserves this award so that they can vote for who they wanted to anyway.

LSU BASKETBALL LSU MBB vs Kansas State Post Game Presser Notes

Matt McMahon
  • Thought his team played well in stretches, but had some segments where they really struggled.
  • Thought they played well with effort on the defensive side of the ball, but again, stretches of bad play hurt them.
  • After cutting the lead to 3, they missed nine shots in a row. McMahon says they didn't really change anything, they just didn't covert their shots into baskets.
  • Liked his small ball lineup, felt it gave them some more speed on the floor and it gave K-State some fits.
  • Emphasizes that they need to get better at rebounding as a team. They have too much size to get out rebounded every game.
  • Felt they got called for some tough travel calls when he got his technical foul.
  • Needs his team to sustain their success. There are a bunch of stretches where they look good, but it all falls apart after a few minutes and they can't catch back up.
  • Felt the amount of K-State offensive rebounds really hurt them and was one of the stories of this game.
  • Calls every game a "one game season." They need to get better every day and just focus on winning one game at a time.
  • Feels with winter break and no school, this is a big time for this team to get better. They think it's a great opportunity from a player development standpoint. Thinks these six weeks provide a lot of opportunities for growth and development.
Jalen Reed and Jordan Wright
  • Felt their effort on defense helped them climb back into the game. Said Trae Hannibal and Mike Williams set the tone with how they defended on the perimeter.
  • Reed says it's been a learning experience playing the 5 because he hadn't done it much, but he likes the small ball lineup they went to when they made a comeback.
  • Feels the team is improving and they've figured out their roles on this team. Says when they play hard and rebound the ball, they're successful, they just need to do that for a full 40 minutes.
  • Wright says he's been turning the ball over more than he should the past few games, so he's going to hit the film room to see what he's doing wrong.
  • Thinks they play too fast and try to do too much sometimes. Said in the second half, they had just five turnovers, and he felt they weren't trying to hit home runs, they were trying to hit singles.

INTEL The Situation Room: 12/8/23

Welcome to The Situation Room

What is the Situation Room? For anyone that missed our debut last week, The situation room, not unlike the one in the White House is an intelligence management room. A place where you can come get the latest inside scoop on LSU news and recruiting information.

It’s our version of a popular series across the Rivals network. A lot of sites that do these types of reports call them “War Room”, our Missouri site calls theirs “The Chamber”, and while I’m stealing their idea, I wanted to come up with something original for the name and to my knowledge no one is using The Situation Room.

With that said, lets gets right to it.

The Latest on Staffing Changes

Knowing Brian Kelly and how he operates, I don't expect much to be leaked on the LSU side of things and I haven't heard much in terms of new chatter since the last update I gave you guys. I am still expecting some changes to be made and like I said previously given the amount and extent of the chatter I've heard to date; I would be very surprised if there wasn't. Unfortunately, nothing new to add.

One thing worth adding is that Brian Kelly has previously told us that Jimmy Lindsey has moved to more of a support role with the staff. One of the names I heard in connection with potential staff movements was a new defensive line coach and would be another familiar name to LSU fans if it came to fruition. We'll have to wait and see if Lindsey's transition to a support role is permanent or just temporary, but I have heard at least one name in connection with that spot and it wasn't someone currently on the staff. We know that Jimmy Lindsey is still actively recruiting and communicating with recruits because his name continues to be brought up when talking to prospects, especially those on the defensive line. I wish I had more to share with you on that front but like I said, I'm not expecting a lot of info to be leaked on the LSU side of things and I'll likely have to source my information from contacts elsewhere.

Transfer Portal

I've already posted about it on the board, but I got a text this morning saying Quency Wiggins was going to be entering the transfer portal. Wiggins was a prospect that came to LSU with a lot of promise but finds himself behind others on the depth chart and hasn't really made much movement up in terms of depth.

Who's in the portal?

Brian Kelly told us his staff would take a much more targeted approach to recruiting and offering transfer portal talent. We know LSU wants to add at least one WR from the transfer portal. The first offer went out to Ja'Mori Maclin but all the buzz over the last several days has been centered around Mississippi State transfer Zavion Thomas.

LSU is certainly one to watch with Thomas who's looking to take a visit to Baton Rouge during the open portal period.

LSU added a major piece to the 2024 puzzle securing the flip of former Texas A&M commit Gabriel Reliford early on Friday morning.

One of LSU's top targets for 2025 is set to make his decision in just ten days. Berry has a final three of LSU, Florida and Texas. I haven't yet logged a FurtureCast pick yet, but I'm getting close. I still believe LSU is in the best spot and likely sitting in the pole position here. Frank Wilson has done a tremendous job maintaining Berry's interest in LSU and keeping him actively at the forefront of LSU's 2025 recruiting priorities. Florida has made a strong push due to the efforts of Jabbar Juluke. Texas is continuing to push but feels like they've got some ground to make up. If I made a pick today, it would be for LSU. We'll definitely monitor this one down to the finish line, but the Tigers are still in the best spot and the team to beat.

LSU would love nothing more than to pair what I believe is a future five-star running back in Harlem Berry with current five-star and No.1 quarterback overall for the class of 2025 in Bryce Underwood. The Tigers continue to ramp up their efforts to recruit Underwood. Former Oregon State head coach and new man in charge at Michigan State Jonathan Smith is trying to make a late run at Underwood for the Spartans but this still feels like a two-team race between LSU and Michigan. He wrapped up the 2023 regular season with a trip to Ann Arbor to check out Michigan's home game against Ohio State, though he left early for a film session to prepare for his team's playoff game.

Where I think LSU can set themselves apart here is selling Underwood on their QB development and training opportunities at LSU. In talking with some Michigan contacts, Underwood is reportedly less concerned with NIL money and more concerned about becoming the absolute best athlete he can become and that will play a large role in where he goes. So if I'm LSU, I'm sure the NIL factor is still going to be discussed but I'm going all-out and selling the training tools available to LSU QB's. I'm not going to pretend to know what training tools every college deploys but what we've heard in regard to LSU's VR systems and AI are second to none when it comes to quarterback training.

With a Jan.6 announcement looming, I would call it a slight lead, but I still have LSU as the team to beat here.

LSU BASKETBALL 12/08 LSU MBB Media Availability Notes

Matt McMahon
  • Looking forward to hosting a really good Kansas State team. Says they've had a good week of practice and they're ready for the challenge.
  • Said they tried to space out the week because of exams. They went hard Sunday-Tuesday, took Wednesday off and practiced Thursday and Friday.
  • Said they went back and evaluated their season so far because it's the longest stretch between games all season. Says they've done a lot of things well on the defensive side of the ball, but are trying to get better at three point defense.
  • Says K-State does a great job of creating turnovers, and with LSU's problems turning the ball over this season they need to be more careful with the ball.
  • Talked about how the Wildcats have been in a lot of close games (3 straight OT games) and they've found a way to win.
  • Daimion Collins is back and conditioning. He's not back to full participation, so he will be out for the game Saturday.
  • Trae Hannibal is back and is a full go, he dislocated his finger against North Florida.
  • Need to be disciplined and fundamentally sound, can't turn the ball over early in the shot clock like they've been doing.
  • Thought Jordan Wright took a good step forward in their game last week. He's rebounded well, so he's been a key piece of this team, but wants him to continue to be efficient. Also wants him to takeover as a leader in practice.
  • Jalen Cook has been full go in practice in preparation for him potentially coming back to the team depending on the NCAA waiver. Says the process has been really disappointing. He hates it for Jalen Cook and thinks he meets all the criteria. Says he sees other players getting their waivers, but he can't imagine someone having a better case than Cook.
  • Felt Tyrell Ward has shot the ball really well and he's had a great week of practice so he's been very pleased with his performance and he should see some more good PT.
  • Wants to see the crowd have energy despite the 12:30pm tip. Says it's been 4-5 years since a power five team came to the PMAC in November or December.
Mike Williams III and Jalen Reed
  • Williams feels like he's been coming along very well. Says his coaches and teammates are helping him stay level headed and reminding him that he's going to make mistakes, so don't let them get to him.
  • Reed feels like he's made a complete 180 from last year to this year. Says he learned from his struggles last season and has learned to be more physical.
  • Reed says it's been extremely impressive what Williams has been able to do as a true freshman.
  • Williams says Jalen Cook has been helping him every single day in practice. Even though he can't play, he's helped Williams through his freshman season.
  • A lot of their turnovers are "unforced," so they just need to stop trying to make home run plays every time down the court.
  • Williams says they're emphasizing getting over screens on Tylor Perry so he can't get to his pull up spots because that's where he can kill them.
