LSU FOOTBALL 10/11 Brian Kelly/Hugh Freeze Teleconference

As always, Brian Kelly was the first one on the call, so here are some notes from his teleconference this morning.
  • Says this is a very difficult offense to defend. Two QBs who can run and throw with a physical offensive line.
  • Highlights Auburn's defensive line, said they're probably one of the best they'll face all year.
  • Jayden has 5 games of at least 4 touchdowns. Ranks 1st in SEC in Touchdowns, pass efficiency and passing yards.
  • He's had QBs that have had different skill sets, but says Jayden's speed, durability and toughness make him unique. Says he's the second QB he's had hit 10,000 passing and 2,000 rushing yards.
  • Hopes the turnovers forced last week can get his defensive on the right track. Says turnovers and sacks are 'contagious' and he hopes they can feed off that.
  • Joe Sloan has been an important part of Jayden's development. Says Jaydens and Sloan's relationship is really good, and he's seen those two grow together.
  • Says every offense has it's identity, but this Auburn offense is a little different. They run two QBs and you have to key in on the rushing threat more than normal.
  • Feels LSU played better on Saturday due to some of the things Pete Jenkins brought up. There's still a long way to go, but feels Jenkins' experience will help them continue to improve.
  • Talks about not only his team, but the entire nation supporting Greg Brooks. Arkansas and Missouri wore the 3 sticker on their helmet and when he was moved to Memphis, the Memphis football coach reached out. Says his players have been impacted, because they now realize how lucky they are to play the game, because it can all be taken away from them at any minute.

Hugh Freeze comes on at 12:10 CST, so check this thread again around 12:30 for some notes on his teleconference!

LSU FOOTBALL 10/09 Brian Kelly Media Availability

  • Injury report: Chris Hilton: doubtful. Omar Speights, Aaron Anderson and Charles Turner: Probable
  • Liked what he saw from his team to comeback down 22-7 on the road in the SEC.
  • Jayden Daniels won SEC player of the week for the third time in four weeks. Emery Jones won SEC O-lineman of the week. Logan Diggs moved into second in the SEC in rushing. Nationally, BT is first in receiving touchdowns and Malik is second in receiving yards.
  • Highlighted LSU's ability to run the ball against Missouri. Over 270 rushing yards against a team that ranked among the top in the nation in rushing defense.
  • Says Auburn is going to run the football early and often.
  • Looking forward to playing 5 of the final 6 six games at home. 3 of first 4 games on the road were against top 25 opponents.
  • Says Jayden doesn't have any major injuries. They're worried about his soreness, but he's going to be a full go for practice tomorrow.
  • Feels the defense has made progress at all levels. Feels the progress up front is sustainable, but says the secondary still has work to do. Feels there are a lot of pieces coming together and thinks they can get moving in the right direction.
  • Last year, Jayden wasn't progressing through is reads or staying in the pocket, but he's seen Jayden grow into one of the best passers in the nation through the past year.
  • Says Missouri was trying to prevent the big play, so it gave them the opportunity to run the ball a lot and find a lot of success.
  • Charles Turner is probable, had an MRI and thought he had a meniscus injury, but MRI showed it isn't as bad as they thought.
  • Says it wasn't exactly the plan to have Logan Diggs be the full time RB1, but he's been physical, he's blocked well and has just done everything well for them, so they've stuck with him.
  • Felt Ryan Yaites did a good job on Saturday, but they want him to play with more aggressiveness and confidence. He doesn't want to make a mistake, but he's told him to just go play free.
  • They've sent in the calls they had concerns over and are waiting to hear back. Says it's hard for them to see how those are missed. "You'd think you could see a guy right in front of you moving, but I guess not."
  • Thinks all three of their receivers have the ability to make the first guy miss after a catch. They have a sense and awareness to know where guys are when the make the catch.
  • In their three down defense, they were moving Harold Perkins around and using different fronts. Now that they're in four down, they can use him in the SAM/Nickel positions and they can define his position better. Feels he's becoming more comfortable in his new position.

The Believability Factor

"Kelly said Pete Jenkins has made an impact already: It's going to take some time for the long haul, but from my perspective it's been good meeting with him on the techniques we need. I've enjoyed having him here. He loves LSU. The believablity factor with our players is immediate."

That was before he game.

And Pete Jenkins switched LSU to a 4 man front immediately..

Smith, Jones, Wingo and Swinson, and a host of others on the DL looked significantly better in the second half.

I would love to know Jenkins told Maason Smith.

LSU may have turned the corner with the snap of a finger, bringing in Pete Jenkins.

starting to believe JD has a Heisman shot....

a lot to play out, and he will (I'm pretty sure) have to have a signature win over Bama, and hold pat with the Aggies. Also a factor is there is no obvious choice as yet. But he is well positioned both stats and video wise. One competitor, J Williams, has a daunting schedule upcoming, another factor. We shall see, but you can't win it if you're not in it, and right now, he is.
