LSU FOOTBALL 11/21 Brian Kelly Media Availability

  • He's proud of the way his team went on the road and matched the physicality and intensity of a team coming off a bye week. Also proud of how they responded coming off a big win against Ole Miss.
  • Damien Ramos won SEC Specialist of the Week and Emery Jones won SEC OL of the Week.
  • The first time they played on the road against SC, he felt they played reactive. This week, the didn't react, they attacked. Says that's how they need to play this Saturday against A&M.
  • Calls A&M's offense very balanced. They run and throw the ball well and he thinks Connor Weigman is a very good quarterback. Their RB leads the SEC in rushing with 98 yards per game.
  • The Aggies are really good at taking the football of the way. They rank top-3 in the SEC in turnovers forced per game. Need to be careful with the football.
  • Feels they learned a lot in 2022 on their trip to Kyle Field. Says they, like LSU, separate themselves from some of the other tough environments in the nation.
  • Says the 12-team playoff doesn't effect how they view games like this. Even though they would still have a chance with a loss, they are fully focused on winning and preparing the same way every week.
  • Says Blake Baker has brought some exotic blitz packages with him from Missouri. We saw that I-formation they run a blitz out of against Arkansas. Says he's done that in the past, and he thought this was the week to use it against a mobile QB like Taylen Green.
  • They're getting much more consistent. They had glaring weaknesses at multiple spots, but he feels they're cleaning those up every week, which has helped them win in different ways.
  • Nussmeier is completing under 60% of his passes in SEC plays, but he says it's because they push the ball downfield a lot. They don't run bubble screens and other quick passes like that all that often. It's a progression offense that forces Nuss to push the ball more than normal, which is why his completion percentage is lower than we saw with Jayden.
  • Says Caden Durham is only 80% right now, but he's still balling out. He says it's hard to play through injuries at any position, but especially RB.
  • Says they got their guys to play in unison in the run game this week, which is why they had success against Arkansas. They were sloppy against Ole Miss and the run game struggled.
  • Calls Mike Elko a great defensive mind who has seen just about everything there is to see defense wise.
  • Calls Aaron Burrell a weapon because he basically eliminates opposing kick off returns. They struggled to defend kick returns last year. He recovered from a broken knee cap this summer, and he wasn't 100% at the start of the year, but he's gotten better every week. Says he's kicking FGs from 60+ in practice, but needs to get better with his accuracy. Thinks he'll be a real weapon at kicker when Ramos is gone.
  • Thought for his first game with a heavy load, Trey'Dez Green fared very well. Thought he was great inside the numbers, but has some work to do outside the numbers. Said he blocked well on the perimeter and was assignment correct.

LSU FOOTBALL Defense

Before the season I said LSU would end up a top 50 defense. After the first few weeks I was questioning my sanity. However, we just played the #2 offense and #9 offenses in the country in back-to-back weeks and held them to 3 total TD's. Every defensive coach deserves high praise. BK deserves praise for quite a bold move in canning the entire defensive staff last year. Coaching matters.

SEC It's insane to think how easily Bama could be 3-4 right now...

Honestly, I'm kind of pissed off that they aren't. It took a miracle play for them to hold of Georgia and South Carolina had to basically give it away - more than once - to keep from coming out of that game with a win.

And they still have to face us at night in Death Valley. Didn't work out too well for them last time, got a feeling it won't this time either.

LSU FOOTBALL 11/17 Brian Kelly Media Availability Notes

  • Chris Hilton will be out for Saturday's game. Daniels is still probable, so he'll likely go.
  • Calls Whit Weeks an instinctive player who elevates the players around him.
  • Believes they should replay scoring plays and change of possession. Coaches should be able to challenge anything else. Seemed like there were too many replays on Saturday.
  • Trey'Dez is moving to wide receiver this week. Says they're keeping it simple for him, but want to still make it impactful. Thinks it's important that he gets on the field, but you can't teach him everything about the position in one week.
  • Tyree Adams had what would be considered a "sports hernia." Said he doesn't know exactly what it is, the doctors could tell you more, but he's out. Said it happened pregame and he'd never seen it happen in his 30 years of coaching.
  • Says his defense is "thinking the right way and not over analyzing." They're trying to not give them too many checks and changes so they can just think about their job on that specific play call. It allows them to play fast and be comfortable.
Short one today.

RECRUITING LSU MBB now has No. 2 overall class in 2025

With the commitment of Jalen Reece, LSU now has the No. 2 overall class in 2025, trailing only Duke. It's still early, but it's looking like LSU will have back-to-back top-15 classes (13th in 2024). By the way, Will Wade never once had a top-15 recruiting class in his five year tenure at LSU. He went 31st in 2018, 67th in 2019, 19th in 2020 and 37th in 2021.
